Default Sony confirms “network pass program” PSN Pass for PS3

Quote:
It comes after Pass was spotted overnight on a hardware bundle packaging for the Insomniac shooter. Sony says that the program will “accelerate” its commitment to enhancing premium online services” in its first-party line-up.
The program is akin to that of EA’s Project Ten Dollar, as well as other publisher initiatives. You merely enter a code you get with the game to get access to the full multiplayer service.
Sony is keen to stress the new program is “game-specific.”
“We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities,” a SCEE statement reads.
“This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.
“This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.”
It’s not the first time Sony has done something like. It did something similar with the PSP releases of SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3 and ModNation Racers.

So you won't be able to play used ps3 games online in the future. Basically the same as a cd key.

This is something the game developers wanted, because they are losing a crap ton of money from people buying used games online or through gamestop.

The developers are already doing this themselves actually, by including a one-time-use online code included with new games.

I personally don't have a problem with it... but I'm the kind of person who researches games before I buy, and like to support the developers of the games I purchase.

Dam. Bad news. This lowers sales for used games. People will be forced to buy a new game or resort to purchasing a new console (XBOX)

EA is already starting to implement something similar, wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft was next.

Things like this is whats killing certain markets. Game and movie rentals will be gone soon, as Netflix and gamefly take over.

Then with next gen consoles they'll probably be easy to download full games onto so you never have to leave your chair.

I mean you can already download inFAMOUS 2 on PS3, the full game.

Technology...

Game developers want this, so don't blame Sony. I'm sure Microsoft will follow as well, because like I said, the game developers want it.

Developers are already doing this with games. For example, to play Dirt 3 online you need a one-time-use code that comes with the game. That means anyone who purchases Dirt 3 used, won't have online capability.

With the world economy the way it is, people aren't buying games on release day as much. This leads to a huge market for used games, and every used game that is sold takes money directly out of the game developers pockets.

I don't really play online anyway so I don't care

As long as I can still buy my used game from gamestop, beat it, and take it back within a week and get my money back I'm cool.

Aint this a b*tch? First developers charge and arm and a leg for DLC(I'm looking at you Treyarch...15 dollars for four multiplayer maps and one for zombies) now this.

This wouldn't affect me much because the games I buy used, are more story-based games that don't have a significant multi-player portion or one at all (Enslaved, LA Noire, Batman).

But this is straight up bullshit and total gouging on the part of the game companies. I'm not going to blame Sony or Microsoft (and they will do this too) because it's the game companies trying to kill the used game market.
