Rockets notes after destroying Hawks on Dec. 29
qHouston held its opponent below 70 points for the third time this season with a 94-68 win over Atlanta. It also marked the 12th time since Jeff Van Gundy took over as head coach that the Rockets have kept their opponent under the 70-point plateau. The 68 points by the Hawks were the fewest points ever scored against the Rockets in the all-time series between the two teams, surpassing the previous low of 76 scored by Atlanta on 2/21/97. Houston also extended its home winning streak over Atlanta to eight games.
qTonight's attendance of 18,134 marks the seventh sellout for the Rockets this season.
qTracy McGrady recorded 26 of his game-high 31 points over the first two quarters tonight, marking the best scoring half for the Rockets this season. His total surpassed the previous high of 25 scored by Yao Ming in the second half at Washington (12/9/06). McGrady also reached the 14,000-point mark in his career tonight, becoming the third youngest player in NBA history to reach 14,000 points and 4,000 rebounds in a career.
qJuwan Howard picked up his second straight double-double with a season-high 17 points and 13 rebounds. He entered tonight's game with double-digit rebounding totals in each of his last two games. Howard matched his longest streak of consecutive double-figure rebounding totals with the Rockets, which he set last season (3 games: 1/10/06-1/14/06). His five assists also topped the Rockets tonight, marking just the second time he has ever led or tie for the team lead in assists during his Rockets career.
qChuck Hayes, who finished with eight points and nine rebounds, had hit 11 consecutive free throws prior to his first miss tonight. Hayes was 6-for-6 from the foul line at New Jersey (12/27/06), setting career highs in free throws made and attempted.
qDikembe Mutombo set a season high with 14 rebounds tonight. He along with Juwan Howard reached double-digit rebounding totals for the Rockets. It marked the third straight contest that the Rockets have had two players in double-figure rebounding in the same game.
qBonzi Wells did not dress out for tonight's game vs. Atlanta due to a sore lower back.
qJohn Lucas matched his career highs in rebounds (5) and assists (3) tonight.
qAtlanta finished 0-for-11 from 3-point range, becoming the first Houston opponent to go scoreless from beyond the arc since the Hornets did it against the Rockets at New Orleans (3/25/05). The 11 attempts ties for the third most taken by a Rockets opponent without at least one 3-point field goal. Houston's opponent record is 0-for-14 by the 76ers against the Rockets vs. Philadelphia (2/22/88).
qJoe Johnson finished with 11 points and was the only Hawks player in double-figure scoring through three quarters. Josh Childress topped the Hawks with 15 points in the game.
qShelden Williams recorded his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
