Default Lakers Waive Derrick Caracter

EL SEGUNDO - The Los Angeles Lakers have waived forward Derrick Caracter, it was announced today.

Caracter, who was assigned to the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League on January 25, has played 4 games (1 start) with the D-Fenders this season, averaging 15.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 23.5 minutes.

Selected by the Lakers in the second round (58th overall) of the 2010 NBA Draft, Caracter appeared in 41 games last season, averaging 2.0 points and 1.0 rebounds in 5.2 minutes. Caracter was assigned to the Bakersfield Jam twice last season, averaging 8.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 20.0 minutes in three regular season games. In two playoff games with the Jam, he averaged 7.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.50 blocks in 21.5 minutes.

The 6-9 forward played two seasons at Louisville before transferring to the University of Texas at El Paso, where he averaged 14.1 points and 8.1 rebounds in 27 games as a junior with the Miners. Ranked as the best player in the country by some recruiting services heading into his senior year of high school, Caracter averaged 8.2 points and 4.3 rebounds in 53 games (14 starts) over two seasons at Louisville. For his college career, Caracter averaged 10.2 points (.560 FG%) and 5.6 rebounds in 80 games (36 starts).

Time to make some "big trades?"

Kinda surprising because they had high hopes for the kid. Like Mitch said though, flexibility is important. Maybe something else is in the works, or they just wanted to get rid of a contract.

I'm a bit pissed about this. The guy wasn't making any real money, he could've easily been included in any trade deal if necessary. He played very well before getting injured.....I just don't get this move at all......it makes me think Jimmy is drinking heavily.

I really think that Caracter has potential to be a sixth-man type of player... If he just improve his game all-around.. He can get there.. he can be like a Glen Davis type... but sucks they waived him...

This feels like 06' right now.... gettin rid of everyone.... F' me...

*Nothing really last forever, but everything happens for a reason*
I'm sorry, really emotional right now.....
Like, it's really a different chapter now.... First we lost Ariza 3 years ago.. Sasha, Farmar, DJ, JP, Ammo, then Odom and Shannon.....

Peace out LO, I hope I get to see you in a Lakers Uniform again T_T

Well if the lakers are going to make any moves, its likely to add another player. If we got Sessions, Gilbert, or Flynn in the next few days, I think you'd completely forget that we cut Caracter. Plus, I doubt he was going to see any time with the bigs we already have on this team. McRoberts isn't even seeing any time.

Looks like we're finally hitting up that 3 team deal.

We're trading pau to the rockets for Luis scola and Kevin Martin

Then we're flipping Kevin Martin to the cavs for Ramon sessions.

Then we have that tpe to use... Hmmm.

To use on mo or Johnny salmons or oj mayo to be our kick off the bench..

We'd be elite again.

Removing pau allows drew to be a beast down low(especially with sessions feeding him)
Scola brings toughness and heart all while hustling.

And somebody brings a bang for our buck off the bench.

Well finally be a Great squad allowing Kobe to get some rest.

Then Blake comes back.
(just been thinking out loud.lol)

5-drew
4-scola
3- mwp
2-bean
1-sessions

Bench
1- Blake
2- tpe fire power
3- Barnes
4- mcbob
5- murph

Then we have mini mamba to mix it up! Lol

The rockets deal was only going to happen because they wanted Nene. He's obviously a Nugget now, rockets will not give up scola and kmart for pau.

Maybe they will sign him back in 48 hours who knows.... Sadly I don't think this means a deal is close.

Strange things has happen before, but Caracter probably was let go base on bigger trades to come and Laker just don't need 15 players on this squad after pulling off some type of trade. I'm sure if players like Howard or a true PG is in the deal Jim Buss is making cuts to save money to be able to afford any new addition to the team.

Now could we please CUT Luke next...Dang this dude is making lots of money riding the bench...

He had knee surgery on the 14th of December and it's not responding as well as hoped. He had problems after D league play. He'd only be taking up a roster spot

Exactly, Mitch mentioned in that interview earlier this season that moves are going to be done to create flexibility i.e. a roster spot open + a trade exception. This allows for a good move if needed.

In the mean time, Caracter was injured, had no updates about when his possible return date was, and he'd been out for a while. He was eating up non-guaranteed money that the lakers could be saving. It wasn't a bad decision from a business standpoint. We have enough bigs on this team as it is.

I dont like that 3 team trade... If you're gonna trade Pau, at least trade for another big man. Scola ain't gonna get the job done...

Seriously? He's 15 ppg, and gets a lot of rebounds, and is a presence on defense. You don't think he would get the job done as a 4th option in the starting lineup?

Caracter had quite a bit of upside, so that part of this confuses me. I think they did it because something else is in the works though. It must be to make room for another player. It's not the first time the Lakers have made a move that confused us, and then a bit later there's another move that makes everything make sense.

Edit: Just saw this too:

Quote:
Free agent point guard Gilbert Arenas has had a hard few years. From 2006 to December 2009, when he brought guns into the locker room of the Washington Wizards, he appeared in only 47 games due to a variety of injuries. Then he received a 50-game ban for his gun incident and was eventually sent packing to the Orlando Magic. He played 49 games there last season and was then waived via the amnesty clause before this season got underway.

Now he's looking for work and, luckily for him, the Los Angeles Lakers are looking for a point guard. CBSSports.com reports that Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak "is open-minded about attending" the workout that Arenas is planning to have in Los Angeles later this week.

The 30-year-old Arenas, a three-time All-Star, averaged 10.8 points a game last season in the 70 games he played for the Wizards and Magic.
