Default Danny Manning; Sean Elliott; Glen Rice

Similar to the Shawn Kemp; Derrick Coleman; Larry Johnson, Latrell Sprewell; Penny Hardaway; Eddie Jones and Mark Price; Kevin Johnson; Tim Hardaway I made yesterday and a while ago on power forwards and big guards and little guards. I'll will now turn the attention to some hyped small forwards who had excellent collegiate careers.

All three guys were drafted in either 1988 or 89 (Elliot and Rice.) Danny Manning to first dibs in the 88 draft and Elliot (#3) and Rice (#4) were taken after Never Nervous Pervis and Danny Ferry. They came in looking to take the NBA by storm how they did in college, but it didn't go that way or did it ...

-Danny Manning: Danny had game, could shoot and had a little post game.

-Sean Elliott: Elliott had a decent all around game mostly with the Spurs. Was traded to Detroit, then sent right back to San Antoni less than a year later.

-Glen Rice: Rice was a deadly sharpshooter who was the cover boy for NBA In The Zone in the mid-90s.

A few started out slower than others, some due to injuries. By the mid 90's Manning had peaked, why Rice was just reaching his prime. Elliott topped of in the mid 90s also. By the end of the decade, they were shells of their former selves due to injures and diseases.

Rice's mid-range was second to Jordan in the late 90's.

I think he scored like 20 points in one quarter in an All-Star game one year and won the game's MVP award.

1. Rice

2. Manning
3. Elliot

Rice was a high-octane scorer, dude could light shit up back when he was playing for Miami, remember seeing him drop 50 multiple times, he was a legit scorer and a guy teams game-planned to shut down. I still remember his monster game against the Magic where he put up 50+ and it seemed like he couldn't miss a single damn shot.

Manning and Elliot were both similar, complementary players, Manning at point was the focus of the offense for the Clippers but as he moved around and got injured, decreasing his effectiveness. Elliot was tenacious, a bull-dog, hard-nosed player, great shooter, good for spreading the floor.

You obviously didn't watch enough of Danny Manning. He could grab a rebound, and go coast to coast. One of the most talented players to ever play. He just suffered to many injuries.

If Manning had not suffered so many issues, we would be talking about a HOFer.

He was a lot like Grant Hill and good enough to be traded for Dominique Wilkins but by the time of that trade he had already come back from several injuries and while he was having his best year, he was on a downwards trajectory, when he got to Phoenix the next season he was playing a supporting role at best. Manning wanted to like Pippen, he wanted to be the guy supporting THE GUY, he never wanted to be "The Guy" and I suspect that's a major reason why he bounced out of Atlanta in a hurry.

Careerwise Glen Rice comes out on top.

Yes, Rice comes out on top career wise. However, you said Manning and Elliot were similar complimentary players. Elliot was a 3rd or 4th option at best (San Antonio were never going to get anywhere with him as the 2nd option all those years). Manning could have been a legit 2nd option on a championship team, and a HOFer. Elliot was not on that level.

Frankly, these threads piss me off. Penny Hardaway, Danny Manning and players of that ilk, should not be compared to players far beneath them. Injuries derailed their careers. Penny Hardaway was the best point guard in the NBA, and inspired countless players that we see today. Without injuries, his name would be dotted all through the NBA record books.

For injured players, I like to use their peak as an indicator for where they rank. Career length does play a part in rankings, see Karl Malone, but for the most part I'm ranking the guy that made the larger impact on the game.

People have short memories but Glen Rice coming to LA was a huge deal, it gave them a dead eye shooter. They were also called the Big 3, routinely combined for 70 points or more.

They failed in the first playoff run (pre Phil) but gave 70 wins a real run in the 2000 title run.

The fact that these 3 players would be compared to each other is puzzling. You may as well have replaced Glen Rice with Kelly Tripucka.
