Default Veteren leadership = Being old?

I've heard that term twice today now (first for J-Rich and now for Delfino) but does it actually mean anything? Being a vet means you have experience and you might be able to impart some knowledge, but it doesn't mean you are a leader by default. Is this just a way to boost the stock of old players and a throw away comment for commentators to make to kill some time?

I think they say because of how young the Rockets are. Delfino is the only one with more than 4 years of playing experience.

Same with the Sixers, and any other team filled with young players.

Yeah but leadership implies they have leadership qualities. I don't know much about these guys interpersonal relationships with teammates, but it seems to be used for any old guy that is added to a team of younger guys. Those were just examples of today.
