New to cooking, but it's quickly grabbed my interest.
Thinking about picking up a handheld blender. Are they worth it?
It don't know if it matters. I have a vitamix and separate, albeit cheap, food processor. Don't need another. Since i know some of the handheld blenders come with attachments and you can connect them to a food processor and what not.

this is true. Also, a handheld blender is a great tool. Useful for soups, sauces, batters, hell we even used to make soap with one. You gotta use it properly (dont push it too hard or with really big or hard chunks) and I would suggest a decent one.
Personally, my favorite two kitchen devices have been a slap and chop (pampered chef type), since it made mincing ridiculously easy and a bullet style blender (again ease of use for making everything from omelets to shakes).
I use my immersion blender all the time for purees and soups.... also the one I bought (maybe a CuisinArt??) has multiple attachments for other uses like a whisk/eggbeater and an attachable large container with a blade that basically makes it into a standard food processor.
Also like Booze said, don't use it for mashed potatoes.... they'll turn out gummy.
