Default John Amaechi overwhelmed by coverage

The AP reports: Five days after becoming the first NBA player to acknowledge his homosexuality, former center John Amaechi said the spotlight has been chaotic.

Amaechi, whose "Man in the Middle" memoir will be released Wednesday, said he has been deluged with phone calls and e-mails from friends and supporters. But Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, who coached Amaechi in Orlando, has been the only one from the league to reach out to him.

"I've just been caught up in the whirlwind at the moment," Amaechi said in an interview with The Associated Press.

He said he hoped his coming out would be a catalyst for intelligent discourse and took a measured approach to NBA players' reactions.

I realized reading this that something that may not have been mentioned yet is that if a current player were to "come out" it would completely hijack the season for his team, can you imagine the press coverage of such a moment... i orginally had said on one of the threads that i would want a teamamte to come forward and be honest about his preferences, but i'm seriously rethinking that posaition, if i was a pro player i think i'd want to just answer questions about the game and not my teamates life choices...

He should have known this would happen, whether people are being positive or negative about it. If you make something so controversial like this public, it's going to be a whirlwind.

This guy is a Drama Queen, he knew exactly what he was getting into and I think he's blowing it out of proportion. Nobodoy's really made a big deal out of it, ESPN only did like two interviews on it and the NBA, basically said.........."Who cares". I think Amaechi is just trying to create news and buzz about his book now.

I didn't even know who this guy was 2 weeks ago.

if i were gay in the nba, i wouldn't say sh!t. who the hell would want the pressure and scrutiny? a retired nobody is already getting enough attention. imagine the chaos that would occur if a star player came out. yeah, it would be interesting to see social progression or whatever, but the distraction would just be too much. plus, like it or not, the current nba isn't fully ready for such revelations. i like the military approach - don't ask, don't tell. who gives a sh!t which gender you hump at home? just play basketball and win games.

I heard on the radio that espn is putting out the book and running the interviews. Any truth to them putting the book out?

Where's Stephon's other hand in the photo? He might be rubbin' a little booty behind the scenes. LOL
