Default Can we stop pretending the Spurs are contenders?

In 2011, they lost to the eighth seed Grizzlies in round one.
In 2012, they lost four straight after being up two to the Thunder in the WCF.
In 2013, they are tied 2-2 with an inexperienced Warriors team missing their all-star PF in the WCSF...and there is a possibility they will lose that series.

And yet the Spurs are still the almighty Spurs of the 2000s? **** that. They are not contenders, they cannot beat the Heat. Duncan is one of the most consistent players ever and top ten ever, but he is not the franchise force he was back in the day. Tony Parker is NOT "the best PG in the game". Manu is good, but obviously not the athletic specimen he was 10 years ago. Their bench is good, though not amazing. And their coach? Maybe we've been just a bit too complimentary...I still think he's top ten ever but I'd say Tom Thibodeau has been better in these current playoffs.

Oh, and please do not bring up the regular season. Its irrelevant.

The Celtics went to 7 games in each round, and still won a chip.

Calm down buddy. They'll have a tough time with the Warriors and Grizz, but they'll prevail.

Considering any team other than the Heat contenders is wrong.

They have a better shot at beating Miami than the Warriors do.

If they haven't won in the last 6, why would an old team win one in the next 6? It's not going to happen. Father time doesn't get enough credit.

Why would they rebuild when Duncan/Parker/Ginobili are the type of guys to stay on for a few more years, probably on cheaper deals. They can just try and land a FA that puts them over the hump, and continue to draft well.

If it comes down to it, you trade them in a few more years.

They won't be traded.
Duncan is 37, and at this time in his career a spurs for life.
Ginobili is 35 on his last legs.

Only Parker could be traded but I don't think that he would want to leave the spurs except if he could be relevant, and be paid by a contending franchise in the future (I think best chances are NYK or a LA team - but they would have to pay at least 10M to Parker).

No big free agent is going to San Antonio as always, so the team has to rebuild by drafting good players and solid role-players.

Is this guy saying Parker doesn't deserve a max?

I think Heat would have tougher time vs Memphis than the other 3 teams in West conf left.

They'll probably be in the WCF's for the 2nd year in a row. If they aren't contenders, then who is?

Right now, the 4 teams I would place as the favorites to win it all are the Heat, Pacers, Grizz, and Spurs. OKC would obviously be on that list if they still had Westbrook.
