Default US National Team: 2007 draws announced

http://www.usabasketball.com/seniorm..._moq_draw.html

http://www.nba.com/news/fibaamericas_preview.html

The drawings for preliminary group play are set for the 2007 Tournament of the Americas (aka Olympic qualifiers). We are in Group B with Venezuela,Brazil,Canada, and the US Virgin Islands.

Quote:
"Teams that advance to the finals of the FIBA Americas Championship 2007 will play 10 games in 12 days, so this Championship will be very demanding on every team. It will be as much about each team's depth as it will be about talent. This tournament format is unique. If you advance to the second round, you end up playing eight of the other nine teams competing, and so you'll see a little bit of everything in terms of style of play. The goal for all 10 teams is to be one of the two teams that will earn a qualifying berth for the 2008 Olympics...

The top two finishers will earn a qualification spot for the 2008 Olympic Games that are being held Aug. 8-24 in Beijing, China. The third, fourth and fifth place finishers will qualify for the 12-team 2008 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament, July 7-13, 2008, site TBD, that will qualify the final three teams for the 2008 Olympics.

ZOMG I can't wait

USA got a good group. God intervined and got rid off Wade of Chris Paul. Plus we get Redd, Kobe and Billups back. USA Basketball might make a statement this tourney before the big one.

What do you say?

I say pick up Deron Willaims as well. Excluding that potential perfect fit who has NOT been mentioned. How does this team look?

Billups / Hinrich
Bryant / Redd / Arenas
Anthony / Johnson / Battier
Bosh / Brand
Howard / Stoudemire

Why? If he's held in check by people of similar, if not better talent, he can be held in check. Plus, I still think Arenas skill set would flourish in International ball. He can drive, but his jumper is also money. He's a better fit than Dwyane Wade or LeBron James on an International team. He could fill any hole at either SG or PG. He could play both. He would've been great last summer, but his jumper just wasn't falling. I think he was just real nervous, and eager to impress.

It's not that I dont like Arenas, i dont know. I just prefer T-mac. T-mac brings that intimidation factor i believe.

W/O a doubt. And Mac man was money on Team USA int he summer of 2003. And he was an intimidator (Kobe fills that void in spades now), remember what he did to that dude from Puerto Rico?

Arenas is one of those dudes that needs the ball and the green light to be effective. Thing is he isnt good enough to warrant those things on a team with better shooters and more efficient scorers. Plus he isnt a good passer and played horrible last summer.

Arenas ego also wouldnt let him settle for not playing much at all and thats why i wouldnt even consider bringing him. They made the right choice cutting him the first time. Id bring Pierce if I needed somebody else that could shoot but they really need a defensive minded guard with a jumper.

Ok, I like the points you made. And I guess I can agree. But c'mon now, I know you don't like Arenas, so you never gonna give him his due. Arenas doesn't have a huge ego. He could be a spot up shooter you need. So, who can we get to address this last part of your post? People like Vince Carter, Ray Allen, are done with Olympics and TEAM USA, cause they already got their GOLD medals.

Deron Willaims?
RIP Hamilton?
Paul Pierce?
Ben Gordon?
Kevin Martin?
Mike Miller?
Caron Butler?
Jason Terry?

Let us not forget his team went undefeated and in convincing fashion. Ashame T-Mac is too scared of potential "threats" to ever be included in TEAM USA again.

In a surprise twist, Tim Duncan defects to the Virgin Islands team and eliminates the US.

Seriously though, Brazil should probably have a pretty good team.

Yep, they have a very strong team. Barbosa, Varejao, Tiago Splitter, and possibly Nene this time around. They are a team that can definately outplay USA, particularly inside, as already shown during the exhibition game before the 06 worlds.
