McInnis to sign 1-year deal with Bobcats
Hope it hasn't already been posted.
Quote:
The Charlotte Bobcats will fill the major hole on their depth chart today by signing point guard Jeff McInnis, the Observer has learned.
McInnis' agent, Steve Kauffman, confirmed that McInnis will sign a one-year deal at the veteran minimum (approximately $1.1 million). Under the NBA's collective-bargaining agreement, the league will pay a large portion of McInnis' contract.
McInnis, a Charlottean, will back up another former North Carolina point guard, Raymond Felton. Once the Bobcats bought out the final season on Brevin Knight's contract, and McInnis became a free agent, the Bobcats had no backup point guard under contract.
Kauffman hoped to get more money for McInnis, who will turn 33 in October. However, Kauffman acknowledged in an interview with the Observer that most players still unsigned will have to accept veteran-minimum contracts in an NBA marketplace with few open roster spots.
"I think it's pretty simple -- he really wanted to play there,'' said Kauffman. "There were a lot of other interested teams, but with a couple of obvious exceptions, most players (still looking for contracts) are minimum guys.''
McInnis came to the Bobcats in a midseason trade with the New Jersey Nets. In 38 games last season, he averaged 4.3 points and 3.3 assists.
The Bobcats could still add a big man to fill out their depth before training camp convenes in Wilmington in early October.
