Default Should the Celtics have extended Paul Pierce now?

"This is not to suggest (Paul) Pierce didn't merit an extension. But he still had two years left on his previous deal and while he is clearly the Celtics' best player, do you really think he deserves $20 million a year for three more years when he still has yet to prove he can carry a team? Is that too harsh? Maybe. But if you are going to pay the guy that kind of money, the least you can expect is that he can take a team to the postseason. Since the Celtics started to become a playoff-caliber team, in 2001-02, the only time they have had any degree of success is when Pierce had an All-Star-caliber sidekick, one usually named Antoine Walker, and he wasn't left to shoulder the majority of the load." Boston Globe

"What would have been the downside had the Celtics decided to wait a year on the extension? Why not see what Pierce did with this team before emptying the vault? If he led it to 55 wins and the Eastern Conference finals, then great. You produce the extension and reward him. But what if this team wins 38 games next year? Or 42 and barely sneaks into the playoffs? You've got a guy on the books for $59-plus million who likely will be very hard to move -- unless Isiah Thomas is still in charge in New York -- and you've had another season in which he really hasn't been able to put the team on his back and succeed." Peter May have neglected to mention that P had the optiojn of opting out after next season, and if he wasn't signed quickly might have been angered, possibly pushing the team into a situation where everyone knows Danny has to trade him so all offers end up below market value. All considered, better off wrapping him up now.

Say what you want about his the lack of team success he has experienced, but much of that has been through no fault of his own. He came up with Pitino moving guys in and out town like U-haul. And if he wasn't doing that he was was making horrible trades, forget about Chauncey, how about Vitaly Potapenko for the #9 pick in the 99 draft(which they could've drafted Shawn Marion, Baron Davis, or Andre Miller with).

Move onto having Chris Wallace, inarguably the worst gm in the last 10 years not named Isiah Thomas. Who had three 1st round picks(2 of which were lottery picks) in the 01' and used them to draft 3 swingmen. Two of which aren't even in the league anymore(Kedrick Brown and Joe Forte). And this is when the two biggest needs on the team were a point guard and a big man. What made this decision so bad was that pick they used on Kedrick Brown belonged to Denver and would have been unprotected in the 03 draft(it was top 5 protected in 01', and top 3 protected in 02.) Meaning they would have had a shot at drafting high in one of the best drafts of all time. He bragged about trading away Joe Johnson for Tony Delk and Rodney Rodgers, "because the Suns really had wanted Kedrick Brown". He traded for Vin Baker when everybody and their father knew he was washed up.

I thought we had gotten past the whole he can carry the team by himself bullsh*t. Name one player in the history of the game who carried a team on his own? Whats the difference between Nique and the Legend? Its easy Larry played with HOFer's and All-stars. Nique played with a broken down Moses Malone and a cast of slightly above average players. There isn't one player who has done it by himself. Because its not possible. Teams win championships, not individuals. Pierce has played under 4 different coaches, and 3 different gms. The team around has been shuffeld over and over again. But he has proven that when he plays with talented guys, he can excel.

Default Good move for the Celtics!

The Celtics made a great move by extended Pierce's contract. Pierce has yet to show signs of slowing down after coming off one of his best seasons, if not the best season he has had ever since playing at the games highest level. He may not be able to carry a team quite yet but it's worth giving him the chance. As for now the Celtics will have to bring in another veteran player who could be a positive influence on the young guys. By Pierce signing this extension, it does not show that he changed his attitude unless the Celtics helped him out - making a promise. I am predicting the Celtics told Pierce that they would do whatever they could to help the team win now or within two seasons. They will bring in a All-Star like Iverson and if they don't do it this season, something will definitely happen in the great free agent availability next offseason.

Any guy would leave a team if he knew he had a great chance at winning a championship, even Pierce. The Celtics had to be doing something to get him to stay, not by paying him 20 million a year but something extra. Before this extension, I saw Pierce as the next "Mailman". The Celtics pulled something out of their hat that went along with the big contract and I will be excited to see what happens next when they do it again.
