The New Orleans Hornets announced today that they have signed free agent forward/center Chris Andersen. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not released.

“We know that Chris is a good person who made a bad mistake and we’re proud of him for taking responsibility for his actions,” said Hornets Owner George Shinn. “Now that he has taken the steps to be reinstated by the NBA, we can concentrate on what he can do to help this team as we head towards the playoffs.”

Andersen was officially reinstated by the NBA on Tuesday. He was dismissed from the league on Jan. 27, 2006, after violating the terms of the league’s anti-drug policy.

“I am truly sorry for letting down the organization, my teammates, the fans and the city with my mistakes,” said Andersen. “I humbly thank the NBA and the Shinn family for this second chance and I promise that I will do everything I can on and off the court to make the most of it.”

NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Hornets formally welcomed back Chris "Birdman" Andersen on Wednesday after he spent more than two years sidelined because of a drug suspension.

Andersen was kicked out of the NBA on Jan. 27, 2006, for violating the league's drug policy.

"A lot of people, when they fail, they stay there ... but the strong person always rises up after making a mistake or failing, and you have done just that," Hornets owner George Shinn told Andersen. "You will shine again and we are very happy to have you here."

The NBA reinstated him on Tuesday, when Andersen was in New Orleans for a physical.

Andersen's rights belonged to the Hornets as long as they offered him a contract within 30 days. The free-agent contract was announced on Wednesday, but the terms were not disclosed.

Hopefully this works out for Andersen and the team.

Didn't make a HUGE impact. Hustle off the bench, rebounding, shot blocking. The fans liked him.

Nice, I love this more a LOT. He's one of my favorite Hornet players.

Too bad he dropped the whole Birdman thing.

not a birdman fan.
to me, he's just another mark madsen on an nba team. only difference is that mark madsen is clean.
hey if the nfl let ricky williams back in the nfl, why can't the nba let the birdman back? lol

What!? No love for Mr. Chris Andersen! I really like the guy both as a person and a player. Andersen plays hard, gives you lots of blocks and rebounds.
