Default Parker Ruled Out of FIBA World Championship

Parker Ruled Out of FIBA World Championship

18/08/2006

SENDAI CITY (FIBA World Championship) - France point guard Tony Parker was on Friday ruled out of the FIBA World Championship with a broken finger.

Parker sustained the injury after getting his finger caught in the jersey of an opponent during France's last warm-up game against Brazil on Tuesday.

He was initially ruled out of Les Bleus' opening game against Argentina, but on Friday - one day before the French team's clash with Argentina - coach Claude Bergeaud announced Parker would not play at all.

"Tony wanted to try and play with the injury but I didn't feel it was worth taking the risk." a distraught Bergeaud said. "He will not be playing in the tournament and will return to San Antonio to recover from the injury."

Parker's absence changes the dynamic of the French team with back-up point guard Aymeric Jeanneau now thrust into the starting role, with Joseph Gomis promoted as a second string playmaker.

Prompting Parker's inability to play, France beat the 24-hour deadline for submitting rosters to tournament organizers FIBA and replaced the San Antonio Spurs guard with Mamoutou Diarra.

This is a huge blow for France.

He needs to just tape it up and play through it. He has plenty of time afterwards to let it heal.

I don't think it's that bad, from what I heard he didn't even start in the European CHamipionships, and his game doesn't even fit the international level.

And where do you think he has learned to play and showcased his talent? He was playing pro ball for Paris from 17 yo to 19. It's a huge blow on France's chance. It's true that he had a bad tournament 2 years ago, and that he's better with NBA rules, but still...

Seriously, bunch of players play with broken fingers. I have. I have even played with a severly strained (almost torn) thumb muscle.

When I talk about career, I'm not talking about your local reputation or whatever. I'm talking millions. Matter of fact, Parker thought he would just sit the Argentina game. The doctors advised against it, and the ultimate decision was taken by Bergeaud, not by Parker.

He's already made millions.

And a career is subjective. I put it on the line, and I was scheduled to play D1 College basketball. Not simply 'local reputation'.

Sucks for France, I really thought they could get far with him.

Sorry, it really is local. That is so far from pro. And there are many different fractures that you can suffer on a hand. But hey, whatever makes you feel good. You're arguing with doctors and the whole organization around the national team. And just for information, the Spurs staff wants him back really soon, as soon as sunday.

Anyway I'd be way more worried for France if Diaw was out. I hope Gomis will get some nice playing time now.
