Default How come this year's Draft Lottery isn't as anticipated as last year's?

Simple question.

I remember the anticipation for last year's Draft Lottery was big.

This year, I don't feel that same vibe.

Why?

Whereas last year's Draft was Durant, Oden, and all those Gators, this year has a ton of freshmen and some very strong players.

Beasley/Rose just don't carry the same hype, for whatever reason.

Just look at your own post.

You mention Oden (everyone was following him since HS), Durant (same story, he was breaking records in college ball), and everyone had gotten to know the Gators (Noah's wacky attitude and lots of TV time after their first championship).

There was a lot more familiarity with the incoming rookies and Oden/Durant were drawing comparisons to HOF'rs.

This year, we have a ton of unproven freshmen who didn't live up the hype (see OJ Mayo) and upperclassman that aren't household names outside of college ball. For the average Joe, the only guy he knew in the championship game was Rose and thats probably all he knows about him.

Probably because Beasley/Rose, while being great players, just don't have the hype surronding them that Oden/Durant had. Last years draft was also being billed as one of the best of all time.

Last year was the first time the 1 year minimum rule was in effect too...

So it had a combination of 2 years worth of players...

i know i am pretty excited- i see rose as the best point gaurd prospect ive seen- i was huge on jason kidd but havent seen a more exciting pg prospect athleticaly- closest nba comparison is almost lebron james- he is to pg what james is to sg/sf - bigger stronger, faster, & a higher jumper than anyone else- it wont excite a whole lot of people when the milwaukee bucks select him witht the #1 pick they "win"

pick 2 will be interesting to see if beasley will go to charlotte or if sacramento will be the "lucky" one

pick 3 is the key to this draft i think it will be minnisota and brooke lopez, it sure could be new york or someone else for bayless- bayless may be the key to the draft and trading- seems he is the guy everybody want after the big 2

if it were more about who deserves to win and who doesnt instead of the math- i would love to see rose in (even though im a nugs fan) portland- they would become a team with a real chance to become great- rose in sac would be neat too, & the clippers could be turned around with a guy like that - seatle, miami,& new york dont deserve to win-

i am excited to also see some possible big trades determined by the order also- i believe some big trades could take place & the draft order will effect them maybey

No player coming in is expected to change a team into a championship contender in the coming years. I am pretty excited about the draft lottery. I watched a little last year, went out side to shoot some hoops. As my brother pulled up he got out and said he heard Portland got the number 1 pick. I went back inside and saw we got number 1. This year I will probably watch the entire draft lottery.

I plan on watching the draft lottery because I just think it's a cool thing, and there's some drama / excitement, but the reason why the hype is down is because of the playoffs.

See, last year, after San Antonio beat Phoenix, you saw the Spurs going all the way. Detroit didn't have Big Ben (ie 2005); Utah didn't have the experience; and Lebron (Cleveland) was going to get swarmed. So, there was more hype over the Durant/Oden lottery.

This year, nothing's granted / for sure like last year. Boston v Detroit ... take your pick. The Hornets or Spurs could make it interesting against LA. And in the Finals ... Boston vs LA; Detroit vs LA; NO vs Detroit; NO vs Boston, etc - again, nothing's for sure. Therefore, less hype for the draft lottery.

Honestly I think its more because the quality of the ball has been so much better people want to focus on the games instead of the draft.
