Default Draft status 2010

Are you guys aware Utah own New Yorks 2010 no 1 pick unprotected?

Thats the final year of alot of their rubbish contracts.

Which means likely top 5.

Thats quiet an asset to an already formidable team.

The fact that they play in the east, have a new coach who wants to win and the fact that it's still two years away makes it less than likely.

Thanks for reminding me about that pick.
Even with NY moving their coach, I still think we have a great shot at a meanigful pick.
Zach Randolf will still be on the payroll, but a lot of the other players have options. However, even with options for Curry, Q, Crawford, and James, I still think most of them take the money. Then Curry has another option and Jeffries gets his. Hopefully with all this going on, NY decided to just aim at Lebron and lets the record stay low to get us a great pick .

That will also be the draft summer that we might worry about resigning Okur, Boozer, maybe Williams, Harpring and the Fes.

Strange to think how fast things can change.

I don't get excited for the draft... Even if the Jazz get a player that pans out, he still might not do much until his third or fourth year... Yippee.. let's get excited about 2014!

Why they should be doing everything they can do to win now and not staying pat.

The steady vs. the rapid assault for a title are two separate philosophies, dictated by business demands.

A team like NY or Miami can take large risks to win now becuase if it tanks at some point they still have a consumer base large enough to support them.

SA and Utah have smaller markets which have a taste for consistency (Stockton/Malone, DRob and Duncan). This encourages gm decisions for maintaining success as well as influencing the on the court style of play.

Utah is set for a year or two, then we can expect some moves due to contracts with Williams, Boozer, Okur, AK (trade?) etc...

You're right, but there is very little to spend my sports attention on now anyway.

Not the only thing dictating it. Jazz had money to spend(and a roster slot or two) last year as they usually do but didn't do anything to step up like most of their competetion.

Big difference there The Spurs have had results the Jazz haven't. You'd think they would have learned that you don't wait for next year cuz it may never come but they don't seem to have learned anything from previous failure.

The Jazz have had one losing season in what, 20 years? These are the kind of results I am talking about. No, it isn't a title, but it keeps the fans interested. Miami got one, and went through a lot of lean years before and after getting there. Utah can't afford to do that and would prefer not to anyway.

Utah has been successsful in the playoffs the last two years, and they are getting better by virtue of aging while most of the competition is getting worse by virtue of aging. You are wrong, Utah has been in the mix and will continue to be a contender. Next year Utah is competing for a title.

With 2 of the greatest players ever landing in their lap in consecutive drafts. They failed big time.

That's the problem. In other places only title contenders keep fans interested and even in SLC attendence dropped off for a few years.

They've had one lean year after and could very well be back in the thick of it this year. Miami didn't have two of the greatest players healthy and in their prime for so long either. No one has.

They can certainly afford to spend more if they choose. Obviously they prefer not to.

Don't see them as a title contender. Playoff and division title contender yes.

The Knicks had only the one first round pick this year. They only have a first round pick next year in 2009. I don't think you will see a great improvement in their record with only 2 picks in 2 years. The players they have now are not that good and they are way over the salary cap. Not many teams want bad players with big contracts. They will probably try to play a little better for the new coach, but the have a lot of head cases there. They are looking to unload salary, so they can go after LeBron James in free agency in 2010 if he opts out or in 2011 if he does not opt out of his contract. So do not look for them to be spending big bucks in free agency. For these reasons I think the 2010 pick the Jazz have from the knicks will likely be a lottery pick.

Well, you gotta find a way to get lottery picks somehow when you keep making the playoffs.
