Patrick Patterson undergoes knee surgery

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Patrick Patterson underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure today on his left knee, Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti announced.

The proactive procedure was performed by Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, California. Patterson will be re-evaluated in 4-6 weeks.

This past season, Patterson appeared in 65 games with Toronto averaging 6.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 24.6 minutes per game.

New Timberwolves uniforms

The Minnesota Timberwolves today introduced some of their new uniform designs, which will be worn by the team beginning with the 2017-18 season.

The two designs unveiled today are the “Association” and “Icon” jerseys. As previously announced by Nike, the NBA is eliminating its Home and Road uniform designations, and instead, home teams will pick which of their uniforms will be worn at all home games, with visiting teams choosing a contrasting uniform from their own assortment.

Two additional core uniform designs will be revealed in the coming months.

The uniform looks were created through a collaborative effort between the Timberwolves and Mississippi-based design expert Rodney Richardson of RARE Design.

Trail Blazers sign CJ Wilcox to two-way contract

The Trail Blazers signed guard CJ Wilcox to a two-way contract today.

Wilcox (6-5, 200) holds career NBA averages of 2.0 points (37.0% FG, 33.3% 3-PT, 81.3% FT), 0.5 rebounds, 0.5 assists and 5.7 minutes in 66 games over three seasons with the LA Clippers and Orlando Magic.

With the introduction of two-way contracts, NBA rosters have grown from 15 spots to 17, adding a pair of two-way players that can spend up to 45 days on an NBA roster and the remaining time on an NBA G League roster. Wilcox’s G League assignment has yet to be determined.

Originally drafted with the 28th overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft by the Clippers,
Wilcox, 26, has spent parts of each season on an NBA G League roster, posting averages of 16.9 points (47.3% FG, 42.2% 3-PT, 79.2% FT), 3.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 30 games (19 starts) with Fort Wayne, Bakersfield, Canton and Erie.

The Los Angeles Lakers signed center Stephen Zimmerman today.

Zimmerman spent the 2016-17 season with the Orlando Magic and played in 19 games, averaging 1.2 points and 1.8 rebounds in 5.7 minutes per game. Selected by Orlando in the second round (41st overall) of the 2016 NBA Draft, the 7-foot center spent much of the season with the Erie BayHawks of the NBA G League, where he tallied 13.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.2 steals in 21 games (all starts).

A native of Las Vegas, Zimmerman played one season at UNLV, notching 10.5 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in 26 games (24 starts).

Mavericks sign Maalik Wayns

The Dallas Mavericks have signed free agent guard Maalik Wayns.

Wayns (6-2, 200) is a two-year NBA veteran with career averages of 2.7 points and 1.0 assist in 29 career games (one start) with Philadelphia and L.A. Clippers.

The Philadelphia native spent last season as the starting point guard for Maccabi Rishon in Israel. He averaged 15.1 points, 4.1 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 30.1 minutes in 16 games, while shooting .445 from the floor, .413 from behind-the-arc and .737 from the foul line.

The former Villanova standout went undrafted in the 2012 NBA Draft after foregoing his senior season with the Wildcats. As a junior, Wayns averaged 17.6 points, 4.6 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 33.6 minutes on his way to earning Second Team All-Big East.

Bucks announce additions to front office

The Milwaukee Bucks Basketball Operations department has expanded with the following additions: Milt Newton as Assistant General Manager, David Mincberg as Director of Basketball Strategy, Tony Bollier as Director of Basketball Operations and Ronald Dupree as Scout. The team also named Frank Johnson as Assistant Coach.

“Our basketball operations department continues to take shape and I’m very excited about the additions of Milt, David, Tony and Ronald,” said General Manager Jon Horst. “Together they bring a wealth of experience that will serve our organization extremely well. I look forward to working with them as we continue to assemble a championship-caliber organization.”

Newton brings over 13 years of NBA front office experience to the Bucks including three as the General Manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves (2013-16). Prior to that he spent ten seasons as Vice President of Player Personnel with the Washington Wizards. He also worked as a scout for the Philadelphia 76ers and in front office roles with USA Basketball and the NBA.

A member of the 1988 NCAA Champion Kansas Jayhawks, Newton graduated in 1989 and played basketball professionally in Belgium and Australia, as well as in the Continental Basketball Association.

Mincberg comes to Milwaukee after a five-year stint with the Memphis Grizzlies, where he began as Team Counsel before later serving as Director of Scouting. A native of Washington, D.C., Mincberg received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida and has a law degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Bollier most recently was the Manager of Player Personnel and Coach Relations for the NBA G League. He also worked as an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at his alma mater, Wheaton College (2012-14), and the Director of Basketball Operations at Georgia State University (2011-12). He began his basketball operations career with the NBA in 2007. Bollier received his undergraduate degree in 2006 and was a member of Wheaton’s Men’s Basketball team.

A native of Biloxi, Miss., Dupree spent last season as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at the University of Nevada, Reno. Undrafted in 2003 out of LSU, Dupree went on to an 11-year professional playing career, including six seasons in the NBA with Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, Seattle and Toronto. Following his retirement in 2014, he returned to LSU as a student assistant on the men’s basketball team.

Johnson took over head coaching duties of the Phoenix Suns during the 2001-02 season and held that position for 134 games, compiling a 63-71 (.470) record over parts of three seasons (2001-04). He enjoyed a 10-year NBA playing career with Washington, Houston and Phoenix averaging 8.3 points, 4.2 assists and 1.7 rebounds in 596 games. Johnson was the 11th overall pick in the 1981 NBA Draft out of Wake Forest University.

“Frank is an excellent teacher and brings great enthusiasm for the game,” said Head Coach Jason Kidd. “He understands the hard work necessary to be successful in the NBA and I know he will fit in well with our terrific coaching staff.”

The team also made the following staff appointments: Drew Franklin as Senior Director of Player Development, Harold Hichez as Manager of Player Development, Daniel Marks as Manager, Minor League Operations, Nick Papendieck as Strength and Conditioning Coach (Bucks and Wisconsin Herd), Trevor Poulson as Equipment Manager, Andrew Small as Senior Physical Therapist, Laura Tietjen as Senior Physical Therapist and Nic Turner as Coordinator, Minor League Operations.

2017 NBA Mexico City Games schedule info

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Zignia Live announced today that NBA Mexico City Games 2017 will feature the Brooklyn Nets playing regular-season games against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday, Dec. 7, and the Miami Heat on Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico.

The games will mark the first time the NBA has hosted four regular-season contests in Mexico in the same calendar year. Last January, the Phoenix Suns took on the Dallas Mavericks (Jan. 12) and the San Antonio Spurs (Jan. 14) in Mexico City.

NBA Mexico City Games 2017 culminates the 25th anniversary celebration of the first NBA game in Mexico and marks the 25th and 26th games in Mexico since 1992, the most NBA games held in any country outside the United States and Canada.

The Nets’ roster currently features 2015 No. 2 overall draft pick D’Angelo Russell and Jeremy Lin. The Heat’s roster currently features 2014 All-NBA Third Team member Goran Dragic and Hassan Whiteside, who led the NBA in rebounding last season. The Thunder is led by 2016-17 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player Russell Westbrook and four-time NBA All-Star Paul George.

New Utah Jazz uniforms

The Utah Jazz today revealed the designs for two of its new uniforms for the 2017-18 season with their “Association” (white) and “Icon” (navy) uniforms in partnership with the National Basketball Association’s new agreement with Nike as the official apparel provider. The uniforms also include the first-ever patch, sponsored by Qualtrics, with the 5 For The Fight logo representing the campaign for cancer research.

The look is aesthetically consistent with the team’s previous home and road uniforms.

Ben McLemore out 12 weeks with foot injury

According to Memphis Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace, guard Ben McLemore has been diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. McLemore had surgery today, and will be out for an estimated 12 weeks.

He is expected to make a full recovery, the Kings say.

McLemore’s injury occurred when he landed on another player’s foot after driving to the basket during a pick-up game in Los Angeles.

The New York Knicks today announced multiple front office hirings: Gerald Madkins has been named assistant general manager, Craig Robinson as vice president, player development and G League operations, Harold Ellis as director, player personnel, Michael Arcieri as director, basketball strategy and Fred Cofield as scout.

“Last month, the day after I was hired, I started a full evaluation of the entire basketball operations staff,” Knicks General Manager Scott Perry said. “My first goal was to build-up the highest level front office in the NBA. We are adding a host of highly-regarded and respected basketball people to work with the Knicks to fortify the franchise for years to come.”

According to the New York Post, “with five new additions, there will, at most, be one current front-office member on thin ice, as a source told The Post. Phil Jackson’s top advisor, Clarence Gaines Jr., will stay on. The Knicks had a handful of openings that were never filled — with the death this season of scout Ben Jobe, the retirement of personnel director John Gabriel because of Parkinson’s disease, the departure of executive Chris Bernard and firing of developmental coach Josh Longstaff.”

Madkins returns to the Knicks organization where he was a scout from 2003-07 after four seasons as the L.A. Clippers assistant general manager (2015-17) and director of basketball operations (2013-15). Previously, he served as vice president of player personnel for New Orleans (2010-12), director of scouting for Houston and vice president of player personnel for Rio Grande of the Developmental League (2008-10) and West Coast scout for Seattle/Oklahoma City (2007-08). During his time with those organizations, he was involved in the NBA Draft selections of Anthony Davis (first overall, 2011); Russell Westbrook (fourth, 2007), Wilson Chandler (17th, 2006), Serge Ibaka (24th, 2007), David Lee (30th, 2004), Trevor Ariza (43rd, 2003) and Chase Budinger (44th, 2009). The California-native, played 48 games in the NBA for Cleveland and Golden State, and also played professionally in the Continental Basketball Association, Spanish Basketball League and French Basketball League. He began his post-playing career as a coach at California State University (2000-01) and then served as an assistant coach at his alma mater California, Los Angeles (2001-03).

Robinson spent this past season with Milwaukee serving as vice president of player and organizational development after serving as head coach at Oregon State (2008-14) and Brown University (2006-08). He led Oregon State to a 93-104 record (.472). The Chicago-native began his coaching career as an assistant at the Illinois Institute of Technology (1988-90) and then, became head coach at Chicago Lab School (1999-2000), before serving as an assistant at Northwestern University (2000-06). He was a two-time Ivy League Player of the Year at Princeton University, where he was a teammate of Knicks President Steve Mills. He was then selected by Philadelphia in the fourth round (93rd overall) of 1983 NBA Draft, before playing professionally in England for two seasons.

Ellis joins the organization after five seasons with Orlando as director of pro scouting. Previously, he spent four seasons with Detroit as a scout (2009-12) and as an assistant coach (2008-09) and six seasons with Atlanta as a minor league coordinator/scout. Prior to the NBA, he coached Rome (GA) of the WBA to back-to-back league titles in 2005 and 2006, earning himself consecutive Coach of the Year honors. He also served as a coach for Roanoke (G League), Rockford (CBA), and Las Vegas (IBL). He played three seasons in the NBA, averaging 5.8 points in 145 games for the L.A. Clippers and Denver, and also played in the CBA, USBL and in Greece. He’s a graduate of Morehouse College.

Arcieri, spent the past five seasons with Orlando, most recently serving as director of basketball operations during the 2016-17 season after being the director of basketball administration since 2012-13. His responsibilities included: CBA operations and legal counsel and compliance, salary cap and roster management, contract drafting and execution, player trade and negotiation assistance, budget development and oversight, as well as player evaluation. Prior to joining Orlando, he was on the team counsel with Texas (Developmental League) and a high school coach at Old Tappan, NJ. He was raised in Whitestone (Queens) and Ridgewood, NJ and is a graduate of Bergen Catholic HS, Wesleyan University and Brooklyn Law School.

Cofield was originally selected by New York in the fourth round (73rd overall) of 1985 NBA Draft and averaged 3.7 points over 45 games during the 1985-86 season. He also played for Chicago in 1986-87. The Michigan-native played collegiately at the University of Oregon and Eastern Michigan University.
