Hornets sign Elfrid Payton to second 10-day contract

The Charlotte Hornets have signed guard Elfrid Payton to a second 10-day contract.

Payton signed his first 10-day contract with Charlotte on Feb. 7 and has averaged 2.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.0 steals in 27.7 minutes per game across two appearances (one start) with the team. Earlier this season, Payton appeared in seven contests (three starts) for the New Orleans Pelicans, recording 6.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.4 steals in 20.6 minutes per game. He dished a career-high 21 assists at Indiana (Nov. 25), the second-most in a game by any player this year (22, Trae Young).

Payton has suited up for the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, Pelicans and Hornets throughout his nine-year career, averaging 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.2 steals across 509 outings (399 starts). He was originally selected 10th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers following three seasons at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
