Celtics sign guard Chris Babb to second 10-day contract

The Boston Celtics announced today that they have signed guard Chris Babb to a second 10-day contract.

Babb, a 6’5” guard, has appeared in four games for the Celtics where he has averaged 3.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in 13.1 minutes per game. He has recorded a high of six points against Brooklyn on March 7 and also recorded five points and five rebounds against Golden State on March 5. Originally signed to a 10-day contract on February 28, Babb had appeared in 33 games for the Celtics’ NBA Development League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws, earlier this season. In his time with the Red Claws Babb averaged 12.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.18 steals in 37.5 minutes per game.

Celtics center Vitor Faverani out for season after knee surgery

The Boston Celtics announced today that center Vitor Faverani had successful left knee arthroscopy to repair a torn lateral meniscus at the New England Baptist Hospital. The procedure was performed by Celtics team physician Dr. Brian McKeon and was assisted by Jason Rand, PAC. Faverani will not return this season.

According to ESPN Boston, “Celtics coach Brad Stevens said what was planned as a simple scope soon turned into a pretty major repair. “When they went in and scoped his knee, they found a meniscus tear,” said Stevens. “The way it was explained to me, it was near the root. That was the source of his major discomfort the past couple weeks. And so, it’s going to be a pretty significant rehab and so that was obviously not good news.”

Faverani, a 6’11” center, has appeared in 37 games during his rookie season for the Celtics where he averaged 4.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 0.73 blocks in 13.2 minutes per game. He recorded a season-high of 13 point against Toronto on October 30 and recorded season-highs of 18 rebounds and six blocks against Milwaukee on November 1. Faverani also appeared in four games for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League on assignment this season where he averaged 12.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.0 block in 25.0 minutes per game.

Gerald Wallace out for season after surgery

The Boston Celtics announced today that forward Gerald Wallace underwent successful arthroscopic surgeries on his left knee and his left ankle this morning at New England Baptist Hospital. The surgeries were performed by Celtics team physician Dr. Brian McKeon and was assisted by Dr. Mark Slovenkai. Wallace will be out for the remainder of the season.

Wallace, a 6’7” forward appeared in 58 games for the Celtics this season and averaged 5.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals in 24.4 minutes per game. Wallace made 16 starts for the Celtics this season where he averaged 7.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.2 steals in 33.3 minutes per game. He recorded a season-high of 17 points against Charlotte on November 25.

Celtics: Ainge, Rondo clear the air

Here’s the Boston Globe blog on the Celtics clearing up an issue that will apparently mostly stay internal:

Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said he has cleared the air with point guard Rajon Rondo about his absence from the team trip to Sacramento to remain in Los Angeles and attend a birthday celebration in his honor.

Ainge would not reveal whether Rondo had been disciplined or fined but said the situation has been resolved. Rondo, who was not supposed to play against the Kings, did not travel to Sacramento with his teammates, instead meeting the team in Salt Lake City on Sunday. Rondo has played in the past two games and told reporters his plans were his “business. Not yours.”

“It was between Rondo and I and I learned some things that I didn’t know and we had a lot conversation about it and I’m satisfied with it,” he told the Globe. “He learned from it, too. Let’s move on.”

Boston Celtics lose Gerald Wallace for season

Here’s the Boston Globe reporting on the Celtics, who have already been facing an uphill battle all season and now get even weaker due to injury:

There was a time where the Celtics’ roster was loaded with players, depth wasn’t an issue for coach Brad Stevens.

Those days are long gone after an eventful Friday at the team’s practice facility, when Stevens revealed that veteran forward Gerald Wallace has a torn meniscus and bone spurs in his ankle and is out for the season.

Team president of basketball operations Danny Ainge confirmed Wallace is out for the season and will need surgery. He has two more years on his contract. Also, Stevens said Vitor Faverani had a second opinion on his sore left knee and may also need surgery, although Ainge said it was “premature” to assume the burly center will miss the rest of the season.

The Boston Celtics announced today that they have signed guard Chris Babb to a 10-day contract.

Babb, a 6’5” guard was playing for the Celtics’ NBA Development League affiliate, Maine Red Claws where he averaged 12.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.18 steals and 37.5 minutes in 33 games. He is the 26th Gatorade Call-Up this season from the NBA Development League and the third time the Celtics have signed someone from the D-League this season joining Chris Johnson and Vander Blue. Babb was on the Celtics roster during the 2013 preseason where he appeared in five games for the Celtics and averaged 3.2 points in 6.0 minutes per game while shooting 44.4 percent from three-point territory.

Fun between Rajon Rondo and the media continues

Here’s WEEI reporting on Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo:

In typical Rajon Rondo fashion, the Celtics point guard addressed the media in Boston for the first time since the Boston Herald report claiming he skipped the team’s trip to Sacramento without permission.

What does he make of the media firestorm unleashed after his alleged decision to remain in Los Angeles to celebrate his 28th birthday with friends and family? “I haven’t really read much about it,” he said. “I heard a lot of comments. Nobody knows the story, so you guys keep making up every story you guys possibly can.”

What, exactly, is the story? “It’s my business,” he followed. “It’s not yours.”

Celtics, Rajon Rondo controversy?

Here’s the Boston Herald reporting on Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, who doesn’t seem to be acting like much of a team captain right now:

The Celtics are not taking it as a major issue, but the team is still hoping to straighten things out with Rajon Rondo after his decision to stay in Los Angeles and not accompany the team to Sacramento for Saturday’s game.

While some were displeased by the move, for which Rondo did not receive official permission, others pointed out he was not scheduled to play in the game anyway (on the second night of a back-to-back), and that he may have simply been making some assumptions based on precedent. Multiple sources say he remained in LA for a birthday celebration. He turned 28 on Saturday.

The captain didn’t want to get into the matter before last night’s 110-98 loss to the Jazz.

“We already talked about it,” Rondo said. “There’s nothing to talk about.”

That doesn’t appear to be the case. President of basketball operations Danny Ainge said yesterday he is still looking into the situation.

Rajon Rondo is used to being mentioned in trade rumors

Here’s the Boston Globe blog reporting on Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, who gets mentioned in trade rumors around pretty much every trade deadline for years now:

Rondo has said before that he’s intrigued by the free agency process, but he has also said that he doesn’t like change and could see himself staying in Boston for the rest of his career.

As for being mentioned in rumors, Rondo said, “It gets annoying at times. It’s been like that the last eight years, though. It’s what I do for a living. It’s not who I am. I play basketball for a living, for the time being.

“I’ll be 28 (Saturday). I have a long life to live. I have a lot of things going on outside of basketball for me right now and it’s part of what happens when you’re an NBA player. “

In a rebuilding season, Rondo wasn’t the only Celtic who might have been traded, but Rondo said he didn’t notice concern among his teammates.

Jared Sullinger, Kevin Durant named NBA Players of Week through February 9

Boston Celtics forward Jared Sullinger and Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant today were named NBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, Feb. 3, through Sunday, Feb. 9.

Sullinger helped the Celtics to a 2-1 week, which included wins over the Philadelphia 76ers and Sacramento Kings. He averaged 20.3 points (13th in the conference), 12.7 rebounds (second in the conference) and 1.67 blocks (fourth in the conference). Sullinger posted a point-rebound double-double in all three games, including a 31-point, 16-rebound effort on Feb. 7, when the Celtics topped the Kings 99-89 at TD Garden.

Durant led the Thunder to a 3-1 week, which included wins over Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks. He averaged 31.8 points (second in the conference), 9.0 assists (second in the conference) and 8.0 rebounds. Durant posted two-double-doubles, including a 41-point, 10-rebound effort in which he added nine assists on Feb. 9, as the Thunder beat the Knicks 112-100, at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Other nominees for the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were Brooklyn’s Mason Plumlee, Charlotte’s Al Jefferson, Detroit’s Brandon Jennings and Josh Smith, Houston’s Dwight Howard, Indiana’s David West, Los Angeles Clippers’ Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, Orlando’s Victor Oladipo and San Antonio’s Patty Mills.
