Kevin Garnett had 19 points, no rebounds in Celtics win over Sixers

kevin garnett no rebounds in an nba game

Kevin Garnett couldn’t recall the last time he finished an NBA game without a rebound. And he probably shouldn’t have because it was an NBA generation ago.

Garnett finished Saturday’s 92-79 win over the Philadelphia 76ers with no rebounds in 23 minutes, 26 seconds, the first time in nearly 16 years that he went without a rebound. On Jan. 21, 1997, a 20-year-old Garnett finished with no rebounds in 35 minutes in a 118-106 Timberwolves loss at Toronto.

In that season, Garnett grabbed 10 or more rebounds in a game 17 times and had a season high of 17 rebounds, but for that night, he was empty.

On Saturday night, it was the same situation. He scored a team-high 19 points, on 9-for-11 shooting, even collected a steal and two assists — but no rebounds.

Garnett was in disbelief.

“You know what? I’m looking for the statistician around here, and when I find out what he looks like we’re going to have some problems,” Garnett said, half joking. “I had a rebound in the first quarter. That’s [expletive], that’s [expletive expletive]. I had a rebound in the first half. I think that’s an error and we’re going to fix it.”

He returns to the Red Claws where he has appeared in three games this season with averages of 21.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.3 steals in 39.0 minutes per game.

Avery Bradley not returning for Celtics just yet

Avery Bradley getting closer to return for Celtics

Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge made his weekly appearance on Boston sports radio WEEI Thursday, and addressed the recovery time of injured guard Avery Bradley, as well as any lingering fallout from Rajon Rondo’s recent two-game suspension.

Though he didn’t want to commit firmly to the timetable, Ainge suggested Bradley could return after the Celtics’ post-Christmas West Coast trip, which concludes on Dec. 30 against the Sacramento Kings. Additionally, Ainge said the team will consider sending Bradley up to Portland, Maine, to play in a handful of rehab games with the Red Claws before he returns.

“I think our timetable is to get him back probably after the West Coast trip,” Ainge said. “I mean, that’s hopeful. I hate doing timetables, but we are getting closer, and he is looking good. We’d like to get him practicing, and we’re going to contemplate the possibility of some rehab games in Portland, maybe one or two. Maybe none. But we’ll be really careful with Avery.”

Rondo glad to be back with team

Rondo glad to be back with team

Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, anticipating his return to the lineup Wednesday night following a two-game suspension, joked after Tuesday’s practice that he spent the duration of his time away in Mexico.

“I went to Mexico, couple days, watched the games,” Rondo deadpanned in his first meeting with reporters since last Thursday. “It was cool.”

Rondo was hit with a two-game ban following a dust-up with Nets forward Kris Humphries in the Celtics’ home loss to Brooklyn last Wednesday, and was forced to sit out Boston’s back-to-back this past weekend.

“Yeah, days off, allowed my body to get a chance to rest,” Rondo said.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers knows life is more important than basketball

doc rivers

Sunday was a welcome off day for Celtics coach Doc Rivers, who had few words for reporters Saturday night after receiving news of the death of his former coach and close friend Rick Majerus. It wasn’t lost on Rivers that he was in Milwaukee, where his retired number and photo hang from the rafters of the Bradley Center after three successful seasons at Marquette University.

Rivers has a special bond to Milwaukee, and it was also where he became close to Majerus, who was an assistant to head coach Hank Raymonds at Marquette.

Rivers knew before tipoff Saturday night against the Bucks that Majerus was near death and he appeared emotional at tipoff when stories began surfacing that Majerus had died. In Milwaukee, obviously, this story carried special meaning. Majerus was beloved for his years at Marquette and there isn’t a time here when Rivers isn’t asked about the state of Marquette basketball during a pregame interview.

Bucks rally for 91-88 victory over Celtics

Scott Skiles wanted to insert Larry Sanders into the Milwaukee Bucks’ starting lineup for Saturday night’s game against the Boston Celtics. The coach relented when the high-energy forward said he preferred a reserve role.

It sure looks as if Sanders knows what’s best for him.

He had a career-high 18 points and 16 rebounds to go along with five blocked shots, and the Bucks rallied for a 91-88 victory after the Celtics scored the first 17 points of the game…

Monta Ellis had 17 points and seven assists for the Bucks, while Ersan Ilyasova added 15 points and five rebounds. Brandon Jennings made a big 3-pointer in the fourth quarter…

Paul Pierce paced the Celtics with 19 points, and Kevin Garnett added 17 points and seven rebounds…

Boston played without point guard Rajon Rondo, who served the second of his two-game suspension for his role in a scuffle during a game against the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday. Courtney Lee, who started in Rondo’s place, had 13 points, and Jason Terry finished with 15 points and 11 assists.
