Hornets sign Johnny O`Bryant to second 10-day contract

The Charlotte Hornets today signed forward Johnny O’Bryant to a second 10-day contract. O’Bryant signed his first 10-day contract with Charlotte on Feb. 24 after becoming the D-League’s 23rd Gatorade Call-Up this season.

O’Bryant has played in two games with the Hornets, averaging 8.5 points on 80.0 percent from the field and 3.0 rebounds in 8.5 minutes per contest. The third-year pro scored a career-high 15 points on 7-of-9 field goals in a win against Denver on March 4. He has also appeared in 25 games (all starts) for the D-League’s Northern Arizona Suns this season, owning averages of 18.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists, and was selected as a 2017 NBA D-League All-Star‎.

Originally selected with the 36th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, O’Bryant has now appeared in 109 NBA games (19 starts) over three seasons with Milwaukee, Denver and Charlotte with career averages of 3.1 points and 2.4 rebounds in 11.8 minutes per game.

A native of Cleveland, Miss., O’Bryant was a three-year collegiate player at Louisiana State (2011-14) and posted career averages of 12.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists. He earned All-SEC First Team accolades following the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.

Hornets sign Briante Weber to 10-day contract

Charlotte Hornets General Manager Rich Cho announced today that the team has signed guard Brianté Weber to a 10-day contract. Weber joins the Hornets after signing two consecutive 10-day contracts with the Golden State Warriors.

This season with Golden State, Weber played in seven contests and averaged 1.7 points, 0.6 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 6.6 minutes per game. In his NBA career, the 6-2 guard has appeared in 14 games (four starts) over two seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat and Warriors, averaging 3.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 15.4 minutes per contest. Weber appeared in two postseason games with the Heat, logging six minutes of action during the 2016 NBA Playoffs.

The Virginia Commonwealth University product also played with the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA Development League this season. The 24-year-old appeared in 31 games (all starts) posting averages of 16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 3.3 steals in 36.8 minutes per game. Weber was named NBA D-League Player of the Month in January, and was also selected as a 2016-17 NBA D-League All-Star.

The Hornets roster now stands at 15 players.

The 6-9 O’Bryant saw action in seven games with Denver, averaging 2.9 points and 1.6 rebounds in 6.6 minutes per contest. He has also appeared in 25 games (all starts) for the D-League’s Northern Arizona Suns this season, owning averages of 18.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists, and was selected as a 2017 NBA D-League All-Star‎.

Miles Plumlee injured, will be re-evaluated in two weeks

The Charlotte Hornets announced today that center Miles Plumlee underwent a Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI), which revealed a second-degree calf strain in his right leg. Plumlee will be out for Charlotte’s game tomorrow at Detroit and will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

The 6-11 center was acquired by Charlotte via trade on Feb. 2. He has appeared in five games with the Hornets, averaging 3.2 points on .727 shooting from the field and 3.8 rebounds in 13.4 minutes per contest.

Hornets sign Mike Tobey to second 10-day contract

The Charlotte Hornets have signed center Mike Tobey to a second 10-day contract. Tobey signed his first 10-day contract with Charlotte on Feb. 3 from the Greensboro Swarm, after becoming the first “Call-Up” call-up from the Swarm since its inception.

The 7-0 Tobey has appeared in 29 games (19 starts) for Greensboro in his first D-League season, averaging 11.0 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 26.0 minutes per game. He has scored in double figures 18 times and grabbed double-figure rebounds on 15 occasions, including each of the last five D-League games. Tobey has posted 12 double-doubles for Greensboro on the year.

The Monroe, NY, native played for the Hornets in the 2016 Orlando Pro Summer League and signed with the team on July 25, 2016. In two preseason games with the Hornets, Tobey posted averages of 6.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 block in 18.8 minutes.

A four-year player at the University of Virginia (2012-16), Tobey’s 138 games played rank first in school history. He owns collegiate career averages of 6.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per contest, and was named the ACC Sixth Man of the Year following the 2014-15 season.

Cavs trade Chris Andersen to Hornets, who immediately waive him

Charlotte Hornets General Manager Rich Cho announced today that the team has acquired center Chris Andersen and cash considerations from the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for a protected second-round pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. The second-round pick is top-55 protected. In a subsequent move, the Hornets have waived Andersen and the Charlotte roster stands at 14 players.

Andersen, who is in his 15th season in the NBA, appeared in 12 games for the Cavaliers before undergoing season-ending surgery on his right knee to repair a torn ACL. The 6-10 California native holds career averages of 5.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 17.7 minutes per game in 695 NBA contests.

Charlotte Hornets General Manager Rich Cho announced today that the team has signed guard Ray McCallum to a second 10-day contract. McCallum signed his first 10-day contract with Charlotte on Feb. 3, after earning a “Call-Up” from the Grand Rapids Drive.

The 6-3 McCallum has appeared in 30 games (all starts) for the Drive this season, averaging 18.2 points, 7.5 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 2.4 steals in 37.9 minutes per game, earning him a 2017 NBA D-League All-Star selection. The 25-year-old has recorded two triple-doubles on the year, tallying 23 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists against the Maine Red Claws on Dec. 23 and posting 18 points, 13 assists and 12 boards against the Los Angeles D-Fenders on Jan. 7.

Originally selected with the 36th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, McCallum has appeared in 154 career NBA games (46 starts) over three seasons with the Kings, Spurs and Grizzlies, averaging 6.0 points, 2.4 assists and 2.0 rebounds in 18.2 minutes per contest. His last NBA action came during the 2015-16 season with Memphis, where he appeared in 10 contests (three starts) with averages of 6.9 points, 2.7 boards and 1.4 assists in 21.9 minutes. He was a member of the Detroit Pistons preseason roster prior to the 2016-17 season, but was waived on Oct. 24.

A native of Beverly Hills, Michigan, McCallum was a three-year collegiate player at Detroit Mercy (2010-13) and had career averages of 15.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.7 steals. He earned Horizon League Player of the Year honors for the 2012-13 season.

Ramon Sessions undergoes knee surgery

Charlotte Hornets guard Ramon Sessions has undergone successful surgery to repair a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee. The surgery was performed by Dr. David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY. Sessions is expected to miss approximately four to six weeks. Updates on his status will be provided when available.

The ninth-year pro out of Nevada is averaging 6.2 points, 2.6 assists and 1.5 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game, appearing in 50 games this season (including one start).

Tobey joins the Hornets from the team’s NBA Development League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm, becoming the Swarm’s first-ever D-League to NBA “call-up.” The Hornets roster now stands at 14 players.
