Charlotte Hornets sign Terry Rozier to contract extension

The Charlotte Hornets have signed guard Terry Rozier to a multi-year contract extension.

Per the Charlotte Observer, “the Observer confirmed Thursday morning with a league source that Rozier will sign a maximum extension worth $97 million that will keep him with the Hornets through the 2025-26 season. He has one season left on his current contract.”

“In his two seasons with the Hornets, Terry Rozier has been an instrumental part of our team,” said Hornets President of Basketball Operations & General Manager Mitch Kupchak. “Terry is a highly competitive, tough and talented player that has continually improved all aspects of his game. He has provided leadership and an infectious work ethic that has been a tremendous benefit to our younger players. Terry is an important member of our young, talented team and we are thrilled to have him as a member of the Hornets organization for years to come.”

“Ever since I got to Charlotte, the fans and the organization have embraced me,” Rozier said, “I am excited to remain with the Hornets for the long term and I can’t wait to see what my teammates, coaches, the organization and I can accomplish in the coming years. I am grateful for the trust everyone has put in me and I cannot wait to get back to work for this upcoming season.”

A six-year veteran, Rozier averaged 20.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.3 steals in 34.5 minutes per game during the 2020-21 campaign, setting career-highs in points, assists and steals. In his second season with the Hornets, Rozier shot .450% from the field and made a career-best 222 3-point field goals, which ranked fifth in the NBA and is the fifth most made 3-pointers in a single season in franchise history. He finished the season with three games of 40 points or more, making him just the fourth player in team history to have three or more 40-point performances in a single season. Rozier was also just one of three players during the 2020-21 season with multiple 20-point fourth quarters as he earned Eastern Conference Player of the Week on March 29.

During his tenure with the Hornets, Rozier is averaging 19.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 34.4 minutes per game in 132 contests, including 394 made 3-point field goals, which ranks seventh among the franchise’s all-time leaders. For his career, Rozier has amassed averages of 11.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 24.7 minutes per game in 404 career contests with Charlotte and the Boston Celtics. Rozier has appeared in 50 career postseason games with Boston, averaging 9.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 24.7 minutes per game. He averaged 16.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.3 steals in 36.6 minutes per game in 19 playoff games, all starts, during the 2018 NBA Playoffs.

An Ohio native, Rozier was acquired by Charlotte in a sign-and-trade with the Celtics on July 6, 2019.

Charlotte Hornets sign rookie guard DJ Carton

Charlotte Hornets President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Mitch Kupchak announced yesterday that the team has signed DJ Carton, who went undrafted.

A 6-2 guard, Carton made 27 appearances during the 2020-21 season with the Marquette Golden Eagles, averaging 13.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 31.1 minutes per game. Over his two-year collegiate career with Marquette and Ohio State, he averaged 11.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 28.0 minutes per game in 47 games.

Born in Pineville, North Carolina, Carton grew up in Bettendorf Iowa and played at Bettendorf High School. He is set to appear for Charlotte at the MGM Resorts Summer League 2021.

Charlotte Hornets sign Kelly Oubre Jr.

Charlotte Hornets President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Mitch Kupchak announced yesterday that the team has signed free agent Kelly Oubre Jr.

The contract is reportedly a two-year, $26 million deal.

During the 2020-21 season, Oubre averaged 15.4 points and 6.0 rebounds in 30.7 minutes per game in 55 games while shooting .439% from the field with the Golden State Warriors. Over his six seasons in the NBA, Oubre has appeared in 403 career games with Golden State, Phoenix and Washington, accruing averages of 11.5 points and 4.4 rebounds in 25.0 minutes per game with a career field goal percentage of .433%.

Per the Charlotte Observer, “the move will give the Hornets needed depth at small forward behind Gordon Hayward after their 2020-21 season crumbled in the aftermath of Hayward’s foot injury suffered April 2 in a win at the Indiana Pacers. The Hornets left that game in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings at 25-23 but went 8-16 the rest of the way with Hayward sidelined and missed the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season.”

Oubre has played in 18 career postseason games with the Wizards during the 2017 and 2018 playoffs. He holds career averages of 7.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in 18.5 minutes per game in the postseason.

A New Orleans native, Oubre was originally selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the 15th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft out of Kansas.

Three-team NBA trade sends Steven Adams and Eric Bledsoe to Grizzlies, Jonas Valanciunas to Pelicans

The Memphis Grizzlies have acquired center Steven Adams, guard Eric Bledsoe, the draft rights to wing Ziaire Williams (the 10th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft) and a protected 2022 first round draft pick (via Los Angeles Lakers) from the New Orleans Pelicans as part of a three-team trade also involving the Charlotte Hornets. Memphis also received from New Orleans the draft rights to guard Jared Butler (the 40th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft) for his inclusion in a trade agreed to in principle and to be completed later.

In exchange, the Grizzlies traded center Jonas Valančiūnas, the draft rights to forward Trey Murphy (the 17th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft) and the draft rights to guard Brandon Boston (the 51st overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft) to the Pelicans and traded the draft rights to Tyler Harvey (the 51st overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft) to the Hornets.

In addition, the Hornets traded guard Devonte’ Graham to the Pelicans. The Pelicans traded wing Wesley Iwundu and a protected 2022 first round pick to the Hornets.

“As we entered this offseason, we were intently focused upon improving our shooting, leadership and the overall fit of our roster,” said Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin. “The players that are joining us today speak directly to those areas of concern. More importantly, their strength of character as men, and teammates that are eager to be part of our larger Pelicans family will be critical as we continue building towards sustainable success.”

Adams (6-11, 265) has competed in 588 games (524 starts) and holds career averages of 9.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 26.9 minutes in his eight-year NBA career with the Pelicans and Oklahoma City Thunder. The New Zealand native started all 58 appearances for New Orleans last season and averaged 7.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 27.7 minutes. Selected 12th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft out of the University of Pittsburgh, the 28-year-old ranks seventh in NBA history in field goal percentage (.591).

Bledsoe (6-1, 214) has appeared in 702 games (539 starts) and owns career averages of 14.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 28.0 minutes in his 11-year NBA career with the Pelicans, Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Clippers. Selected 18th overall in the 2010 NBA Draft out of the University of Kentucky, the 31-year-old averaged 12.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 29.7 minutes in 71 games (70 starts) for New Orleans last season.

Williams (6-8 ¼, 185) was named a top-10 finalist for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award last season as a freshman at Stanford University, where he averaged 10.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 27.8 minutes in 20 games. The 19-year-old California native recorded the second triple-double in program history with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists on Jan. 7 vs. Washington and earned Naismith Trophy Player of the Week honors on Jan. 11.

Valančiūnas (6-11 ¼, 265) has competed in 621 games (592 starts) and holds career averages of 12.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 25.6 minutes in his nine-year NBA career with the Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors. Selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, the 29-year-old Lithuania native averaged 16.4 points, 11.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 27.3 minutes in 151 games (148 starts) over two-plus seasons in Memphis.

Hornets sign rookie JT Thor

The Charlotte Hornets have signed second-round draft pick JT Thor.

Thor was originally acquired from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for the draft rights of Balsa Koprivica and center Mason Plumlee.

Thor, the 37th pick out of Auburn in the 2021 NBA Draft, averaged 9.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in minutes per game, making 27 appearances during his lone season with the Tigers. Thor recorded 37 blocks during the 2020-21 season, which ranked eighth in the SEC and second among all SEC freshmen as he averaged 9.9 points and 6.1 rebounds in 24.4 minutes per game in 18 conference games.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, the 6-10 forward grew up in Anchorage, Alaska and attended Norcross High School in Georgia for his final high school season.

Charlotte Hornets waive Caleb Martin

The Charlotte Hornets have waived forward Caleb Martin.

In his second season with the Hornets, Martin averaged 5.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 15.4 minutes per game, appearing in 53 games. Over his two seasons with Charlotte from 2019-21, Martin posted averages of 5.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 16.0 minutes per game in 71 career games.

Undrafted out of Nevada in the 2019 NBA Draft, Martin originally signed with the Hornets on July 31, 2019.

Charlotte Hornets sign Ish Smith

The Charlotte Hornets have signed free agent guard Ish Smith.

A former Wake Forest product, Smith joins the Hornets after he averaged 6.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 21.0 minutes per game in 44 appearances with the Washington Wizards during the 2020-21 season. In his two seasons with the Wizards, Smith averaged 9.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 24.2 minutes per game, appearing in 112 games.

Over his 11-year career, Smith has averaged 7.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 20.2 minutes per game in 654 career games for 11 different teams. Smith has also appeared in 19 career postseason games, averaging 3.3 points and 1.7 assists in 11.5 minutes per game with Memphis, Orlando, Milwaukee, Detroit and Washington.

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Smith ranks second all-time in career assists at Wake Forest and attended Central Cabarrus High School, located in nearby Concord, North Carolina.

Pistons trade Mason Plumlee to Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets have acquired Mason Plumlee and the draft rights to JT Thor in a trade with the Detroit Pistons. In exchange, Charlotte sent the draft rights of Balsa Koprivica to the Pistons.

An eight-year veteran, Plumlee averaged 10.4 points, a career-high 9.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 26.8 minutes per game in 56 games during the 2020-21 season. Last season, Plumlee recorded a triple-double vs. New Orleans on Feb. 14 and at Toronto on Mar. 3 as he was just one of four centers to post multiple triple-doubles.

The former Duke product has appeared in 588 career regular season games, averaging 8.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 22.1 minutes per game with Brooklyn, Portland, Denver and Detroit. During his career, Plumlee has also played in 60 career postseason contests, accruing averages of 3.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 14.9 minutes per game.

Charlotte Hornets sign Scottie Lewis and Arnoldas Kulboka to two-way contracts

The Charlotte Hornets have signed guard Scottie Lewis and forward Arnoldas Kulboka to two-way contracts.

A sophomore out of Florida, the Hornets drafted Lewis with the No. 56 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft after he accrued averages of 7.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 25.5 minutes per game in 21 games during the 2020-21 season. In his two seasons with the Gators, Lewis averaged 8.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 27.6 minutes per contest, making 51 career appearances. The former Gator was a 2019-20 SEC All-Freshman Team selection and earned McDonald’s All-American honors after his senior season at Ranney School.

A 6-10 forward from Lithuania, Kulboka spent last season in the Liga ACB, Spain’s top professional basketball division, with Bilbao Basket where he averaged 9.2 points and 4.0 rebounds in 22.8 minutes per game in 33 games. He appeared in six games for Bilbao Basket at the Basketball Champions League, averaging 6.2 points and 4.7 rebounds in 19.3 minutes per game. Charlotte drafted Kulboka 55th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft as he also spent the 2019-20 season with Bilbao Basket and has played professional basketball internationally since the 2014-15 season when he was with U18 Zalgiris Kaunas.

Charlotte Hornets sign rookies James Bouknight and Kai Jones

Charlotte Hornets have signed rookie guard James Bouknight and rookie forward/center Kai Jones.

A 6-5 guard out of Connecticut, Bouknight was selected 11th overall by Charlotte at the 2021 NBA Draft after he averaged 18.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 31.7 minutes per game in 15 games during the 2020-21 season. For his performance, Bouknight was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team as well as NABC District I Player of the Year as a sophomore. Over his two seasons with the Huskies, Bouknight made 43 appearances and averaged 15.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 27.9 minutes per game.

Selected with the 19th overall pick out of Texas in the 2021 NBA Draft, Jones averaged 8.8 points and 4.8 rebounds in 22.9 minutes per game, appearing in 26 games during the 2020-21 season. Jones went on to being named 2020-21 Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year and was an All-Big 12 honorable mention. A native of the Bahamas, Jones averaged 6.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 19.8 minutes per game in 53 career games over his two-year collegiate career. The former Longhorn was acquired by the Hornets via a draft night trade with the New York Knicks as he became just the fifth Bahamian player to be selected in the NBA Draft.
