Joakim Noah should return soon for Bulls

The Chicago Bulls (22-13) are getting 22.0 ppg from Jimmy Butler, 16.7 ppg from Pau Gasol, 14.6 ppg from Derrick Rose, and 10.6 ppg from Nikola Mirotic. Center Joakim Noah, in 22.3 minutes per game this season, is scoring just 4.5 ppg but also contributing an impressive 8.8 rpg, 3.8 apg and 1.1 bpg. Here’s a health update from the Chicago Sun-Times:

Joakim Noah should return soon for Bulls

Sunday’s scheduled Bulls practice just took on a bit more meaning.

According to Fred Hoiberg, if Joakim Noah and his injured left shoulder can make it through an entire practice without a setback – including taking physical contact – the big man will likely be back in the rotation on Monday when Washington comes to town.

“He’s doing some activity [back in Chicago],’’ Hoiberg said of Noah on Saturday. “We’ll get him to do some live stuff [Sunday], and then hopefully he’ll get through a full practice. That’s the biggest thing right now is just getting through a live practice, which we have not done yet.’’

Derrick Rose may ditch mask soon

The Chicago Bulls are 12-8 and getting a modest 13.4 points and 5.7 assists per game from Derrick Rose this season. Here’s the Chicago Sun-Times with the latest D-Rose update:

Derrick Rose may ditch mask soon

Derrick Rose cut his hair. Has he cut his mask?

At the Bulls’ shootaround before Saturday night’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Rose was showing off a new do. Gone was the look he’s shown off all season, and in was a haircut similar to what he wore during his 2010-11 MVP campaign.

Perhaps of more importance could be the status of Rose’s mask that he’s worn to protect the left orbital bone he broke during training camp. He forgot to wear it during the second half of Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers but has the option of ditching it for good, and left open the possibility following the win.

But if he has made a call, the Bulls don’t know.

Bulls lose third straight game

The Chicago Bulls are 11-8, and half a game above the Orlando Magic for the 8th seed in the Eastern conference. Wednesday night in Boston they lost to the Celtics 105-100; Chicago’s third loss in a row. Here’s the Bulls.com Blog reporting:

Instead, it’s almost a collective shrug now as lineup and rotations have changed all season with Taj Gibson Wednesday getting his first start as Nikola Mirotic went to the bench. Hoiberg said he wanted to change up to help Mirotic get more aggressive and provide some second unit perimeter shooting. It did help produce one of the Bulls’ better starts of late, leading 8-2 and 15-7 before first quarter substitutions led to Boston pulling even at 24 after one quarter.

Gibson finished with eight points and seven rebounds, but played just 35 seconds on the fourth quarter. Tony Snell was scoreless again in 22 minutes while Joakim Noah had a tough minus-18 when he was on the floor. Pau Gasol had 16 points and 15 rebounds and Derrick Rose had 12 points and six assists, though at five of 11 shooting Rose still has not had a 50 percent shooting game this season.

“I wish I could (identify the team’s issue), but I really can’t right now,” said Rose. “This is our first time (with this group) ever really going through it. We’ve been together for a long time and we’re just trying to figure things out. I don’t think it has anything to do with fighting the system or anything. I’m gonna try my hardest to push the ball, even on dead balls just to get up quicker so we have a couple of more seconds for our offense. We’re just trying to figure it out, seeing the lineups, seeing who’s out the there at certain times; just trying to figure it all out.”

Derrick Rose set to return for Bulls

The Chicago Bulls are getting their point guard back tonight. Here’s ESPN.com reporting:

Derrick Rose set to return for Bulls

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose will play Tuesday against the Portland Trail Blazers after missing the last two games because of a sprained left ankle.

“Derrick’s good to go tonight,” Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said. “Everything went well [in shootaround]. He felt really good after the last couple days of practice, so yeah, he’s ready to go.”

Rose, who initially sprained his ankle on Nov. 16 in a win over the Indiana Pacers, is in good spirits heading into his return.

Derrick Rose hopes to return Tuesday

Chicago Bulls (8-4) point guard Derrick Rose is averaging 13.6 points, and 6.0 assists per game this season, on pretty awful shooting: 37.7% FG and 15.0% 3FG. Here’s ESPN.com with the latest:

Derrick Rose hopes to return Tuesday

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose is hopeful that he will be able to play Tuesday against the Portland Trail Blazers after missing the last two games because of a sprained left ankle.

“I feel good,” Rose said after Sunday’s practice. “My body was a little fatigued from just running around or just sitting down for a little time. Being able to run around today, and I had a great workout [Saturday] and I had another workout today after we got done practicing so I’m heading in the right direction … that’s what I’m aiming for, Tuesday, for sure.

Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg seemed encouraged by what Rose was able to do during Sunday’s practice.

Joakim Noah having quiet season for Bulls

The Chicago Bulls are off to an impressive 8-4 season start, and they’re doing so with center Joakim Noah now being used as a backup. Coming off the bench for all 11 games he’s played this season, Noah is averaging 2.5 ppg, 8.4 rpg with 3.5 apg in 20.5 minutes per outing. Very good rebounding and assist numbers per minute, but still overall a quiet season for a player who was previously one of the best centers in the league. Here’s the Bulls.com blog reporting:

Joakim Noah having quiet season for Bulls

Because Noah Friday in 17 minutes had his fifth scoreless game of the season; he has yet to score in double figures in any game despite averaging in double figures in five of his first eight Bulls seasons. He’s had fewer than five points in all but two games.

Noah is averaging a career low 2.5 points per game along with 8.4 rebounds. He’s shooting, the rare times he does, a career low 31.6 percent and 30.8 percent on free throws for a career 71 percent free throw shooter, likely a lifetime low. He’s at a seven-year low in rebounding and career lows in blocks and minutes played and the first season in his career, at least thus far, he hasn’t started a game.

Well, he does say he has his health.

“Physically, I feel good,” Noah insisted. “Now it’s trying to figure out where I can get opportunities offensively and just helping the defense. That’s it. I’ve to be more aggressive when I get my opportunities. There are less. But I’ve still got to still figure it out. It’s tough. Just trying to figure it out; keep working. But it’s definitely an adjustment. I feel like I’m rushing a little bit. I’m making too many turnovers. I like to help the team win. I wasn’t able to do that.”

Bulls unable to stop Warriors winning streak

The Golden State Warriors are 14-0 and chasing history, and didn’t let the Chicago Bulls get in their way. Here’s the Bulls.com blog:

There is a method to that madness that has become Jimmy Butler’s life, the multiple workouts per day, starting basically every morning at 5 and pounding away.

“I want to give us the best chance of winning,” Butler was saying in Oakland late Friday night. “That’s why I train as many times as I train per day, as early as I wake up; to make my body tired and still be able to perform at the highest level.”

Butler did all he could with a decimated backcourt with Derrick Rose out with a sprained ankle and Aaron Brooks with a hamstring strain. Butler in a game high 39 minutes outscored Stephen Curry with 28 points. His nine rebounds matched the Golden State Warriors’ leader. His seven assists were a game high for both teams. But in the end, even with the Bulls trailing 94-91 with under two minutes left after Butler made the Bulls last field goal, it wasn’t enough to subdue the league’s best team as the Warriors finally put the Bulls in their rear view mirror and pulled away to a 106-94 victory.

“First of all, I thought we really competed,” said Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg. “We battled, battled them the whole game. They made a couple of big plays down the stretch. We couldn’t get it back on the other end. But if we battle like that we’re going to win a lot of basketball games this year. We wanted to hold them to 10 threes or under. We did it. (Harrison) Barnes (with 20 points) hitting the two big ones there at the end (turning a four-point Warriors lead with 1:15 left into doubles figures in seconds). We took care of the ball. We didn’t give them a lot of run outs off of turnovers and that was a big goal of ours as well. We didn’t attack well enough down the stretch. But again, you play with that kind of effort we’re going to be fine.”

And here’s CSN Chicago with more on last night’s game:

Through 42 minutes it was hard to tell which was the better team, at least until Golden State’s deadly lineup finished the night by not allowing the Bulls to get anything going offensively in the last half of the fourth.

But the Warriors’ offensive rebounding was an Achilles’ heel, giving up 15 as Draymond Green came up with more than his share of loose balls, producing an effect that went beyond his nine-point, nine-rebound night.

“Yeah, loose balls,” Hoiberg said. “Draymond Green, he’s a horse in there. He does a great job watching his body, getting in there for extra ones. Those loose balls, you’ve got to find a way to come up with those.”

Derrick Rose still dealing with double-vision

Here’s CSN Chicago reporting on Bulls point guard Derrick Rose, who always seems to be getting over one injury or another and this season is averaging 12.6 ppg and 6.0 apg and shooting just 35.9% FG:

Derrick Rose still dealing with double-vision

The timetable surrounding when Derrick Rose’s vision would return to normal was as blurry as Rose’s vision itself but now it’s a bit clearer—although it’s not news that would produced immediate normalcy.

According to Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg, team doctors said Rose’s double-vision could last for three months, meaning there could be at least another month of it considering he underwent surgery on his left orbital bone on September 30.

“They said it could be as a long as 3 months,” Hoiberg said. “But it’s continuing to improve and that’s obviously a positive.”

The timetable was news to Rose when asked about it after Hoiberg spoke following the team’s practice.

“Nah, this is my first time hearing about it,” he said.

Bulls exercise contract options on Tony Snell and Doug McDermott

Bulls exercise contract options on Tony Snell and Doug McDermott

The Chicago Bulls announced today that the team has exercised its fourth-year option for guard Tony Snell and its third-year option for forward Doug McDermott.

By exercising their options, both players will be under contract with the Bulls for the 2016-17 season.

Both of these moves were expected. Snell started 22 games for the Bulls last season, and has started all three so far this season. McDermott is still proving himself as an NBA player but clearly has the Bulls’ interest.
