Bulls forward Mike Dunleavy successfully underwent a low back microdiscectomy procedure earlier today at Rush University Medical Center. Dunleavy had experienced some occasional back discomfort over the summer which had recently worsened. Conservative measures failed to satisfactorily resolve his symptoms, therefore, the decision was made to perform the surgery. The timing is unfortunate, but it was imperative that all conservative measures were exhausted prior to making this decision. He is expected to be out 8-10 weeks.

Jimmy Butler says he is a point guard
Here is the Bulls.com blog reporting on Jimmy Butler, who, according to himself, is really more of a point guard. The position played by teammate Derrick Rose, who incidently happens to score a lot of points for a point guard. Anyway:
“First off, I think I am a point guard,” Butler said without joking. “So I’ve done a heck of a lot of ball screen work, ball handling, getting into the paint and still handling, floaters, all that stuff point guards do. If I get a chance, high pick and roll more. I want some triple doubles. I’ve got to get my handle right so I can pass and get it to guys where they can make shots. I told Fred. You ask what position I play, I say point guard.”
It sounds like a joke for the guy who was supposed to be a small forward replacement for Luol Deng. But having another guard who can handle the ball and allow Rose to play off the ball with Butler’s defensive prowess provides a potentially exceptional and previously unknown element to the Bulls arsenal.
“I’m very excited because I think a lot of people think my last season was a fluke,” acknowledged Butler, who is the 32nd lowest drafted player on the USA roster. “I really don’t care what they think. But I want to prove to myself it wasn’t. I want to show I can get better from last year to this year. That’s my goal, continue to get better every year like I have.
“The main thing is confidence,” Butler continued.
Michael Jordan cologne deal worked out great for Jordan

Jordan simply gave his permission to the fragrance company XEL to sell Michael Jordan cologne. A close adviser testified Thursday that Jordan did nothing else — but the company still paid him $10.6 million between 2002 and 2012.
Estee Portnoy, a long-time marketing manager for Jordan, also testified Thursday that a Japanese TV station hoping to produce a documentary about Jordan once offered him $100,000 to use footage of his days with the Chicago Bulls.
The footage belonged to the NBA, Portnoy said.

Will Derrick Rose make NBA All-Star team next season?

If Derrick Rose’s playoff performance is any indication, the Bulls point guard could be in for a giant 2015-16 season.
That’s according to CSN’s Bulls color commentator Stacey King, who spoke at the Bulls/Sox Academy Tuesday and believes the league’s youngest MVP is getting back to that old form.
“I expect him to have a big year this year, I expect him to make the All-Star team, I expect him to be back to the elite player that we are used to seeing,” King said of the three-time All-Star (2010-2012). “I can’t wait to see him.”
King’s comments come on the heels of a report last week that Rose, 26, is still undecided about participating in Team USA’s minicamp in Las Vegas next week.

Dunleavy (6-9, 230), a 13-year NBA veteran, has appeared in 145 games (124 starts) the last two seasons with Chicago and averaged 10.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 2.1 apg and 0.71 spg in 30.5 mpg. He has also shot .432 from the field, .392 from downtown and .837 from the line.
In addition to his stint with the Bulls, the 34-year old Dunleavy has also played for the Milwaukee Bucks (2011-13), Indiana Pacers (2007-11) and the Golden State Warriors (2002-07). In 902 career games (553 starts), Dunleavy has posted averages of 11.7 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.3 apg and 0.76 spg in 28.6 mpg. He holds career shooting averages of .442 from the field, .376 from behind the arc and .804 from the line. For his career, he ranks 49th in NBA history with 1,212 three-point field goals made.
Originally selected by the Golden State Warriors in the first round (third overall) of the 2002 NBA Draft, Dunleavy’s teams have advanced to the postseason four times. In 26 playoff games, he has produced 10.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.3 apg and 0.73 spg in 27.5 mpg. He also owns postseason shooting averages of .482 from the field, .454 from downtown and .826 from the free throw line.

In 82 games (21 starts) with the Bulls last season, Brooks (6-0, 161) averaged 11.6 ppg, 3.2 apg, 2.0 rpg and 0.66 spg in 23.0 mpg. He also posted shooting averages of .421 from the field, .387 (23rd in the NBA) from downtown and .833 from the line. In his 21 starting assignments, he posted 14.1 ppg, 4.4 apg and 2.5 rpg in 30.9 mpg.
A seven-year veteran of the NBA, Brooks came to Chicago in 2014 after splitting the 2013-14 campaign with the Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets. The Chicago Bulls have signed free agent forward/center Cristiano Felicio (pronunciation: cree-STEE-YAHN-oh).
“We’ve been impressed with Cristiano’s work ethic and potential,” said Chicago Bulls General Manager Gar Forman. “We’re looking forward to working with him and having him come to camp with us this fall.”
Felicio (6-10, 275) played with C.R. Flamengo of the NBB (Novo Basquete Brasil) last season and is currently playing on Chicago’s 2015 Las Vegas Summer League team.
