2016 Cavs free Wine & Gold Scrimmage is October 2

The Cavaliers will prelude the 2016-17 season with their annual FREE “Wine & Gold Scrimmage” on Sunday, October 2nd at 3:30 p.m. at Quicken Loans Arena. The intrasquad scrimmage will give fans a chance to see the Cavs players take the court at The Q for the first time since the conclusion of the historic 2016 NBA Finals.

FREE tickets will be available starting Tuesday, September 20th at NOON at any Discount Drug Mart’s northeast Ohio location, or online at Cavs.com. Fans 17 years of age and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Seating will be general admission and there is a limit of six (6) tickets per transaction. Doors to the arena will open at 2:30 p.m., one hour prior to tipoff.

In addition to getting a first look at this year’s squad, fans will be treated to a sample of the Cavs award-winning game presentation, featuring lights-out player introductions and Humongotron flames, performances from the Cavalier Girls dance team, Scream Team hip-hop troupe, the always-entertaining antics from mascots Moondog and Sir C.C, and more.

Iman Shumpert was arrested for DUI in August

Turns out Iman Shumpert got into some trouble in August that is just coming out now. Here’s the Akron Beacon Journal reporting:

Cavs guard Iman Shumpert could be facing a suspension following his arrest near Atlanta for driving under the influence of marijuana.

Shumpert was arrested around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 10 by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and charged with DUI, possession of marijuana (less than an ounce) and failure to maintain lane after an officer spotted the taillights on his rental car weren’t working and observed him swerving. The Cavs announced Shumpert’s arrest on Friday. No court date has been set…

Shumpert was alone in the vehicle and driving to the airport to pick up his father, according to the arrest report. He had bloodshot eyes and the car smelled of marijuana. Shumpert was given a series of field sobriety tests and acknowledged to the arresting officer he had been smoking marijuana just prior to driving. It was also found in the trunk of his rental car.

Cavs will receive NBA championship rings on October 25

The regular season schedule came out today. Here’s the Akron Beacon Journal reporting on the NBA champion Cavaliers:

The NBA figured 52 years was long enough. Cleveland fans won’t have to wait longer than they have to for their championship banner to be raised.

The Cavaliers will receive their championship rings on opening night against the New York Knicks on Oct. 25. They’ll also host Kevin Durant and the Golden State Warriors in a highly anticipated rematch on Christmas Day — this time at home. It will be their first home game on Christmas since 2008.

The Cavs will face Carmelo Anthony and the revamped Knicks at home to start a season for the second time in three years — the two teams also met on opening night when James first returned to Cleveland two years ago. More details regarding the special opening night ceremonies and championship celebration will be released later.

Cavaliers sign guard Kay Felder

The Cavaliers have signed guard Kay Felder, according to General Manager David Griffin.

Felder (5-9, 176) was the Atlanta Hawks’ No. 54 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. His draft rights were acquired by the Cavs on draft night.

Felder played in all seven games (six starts) for Cleveland in the 2016 Summer League, averaging 15.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals in 29.9 minutes per outing.

The Detroit native was the only player in the country to rank in the Top 5 this past season in both scoring (fourth, 24.4 ppg) and assists (first, 9.3 apg) and became just the fifth player in Division I history over the last 20 years to average over 23 points and six assists in a single season.

Cavaliers re-sign James Jones

The Cavaliers have re-signed guard/forward James Jones.

“We’re very happy to have James back with the Cavaliers,” said Cavs General Manager David Griffin. “He is a Champion in every sense of the word and his leadership and professionalism over the last two years have translated with our team in many different ways that have helped us reach our goals. ‘Champ’ delivers a clear reflection of what success at the highest level should embody and his contributions and commitment to our team are something we need and appreciate greatly.”

Jones doesn’t play much. When he is on the court, he’s mostly there to shoot three-pointers.

Jones (6-8, 218) has spent the past two seasons with Cleveland after originally signing as a free agent with the team on August 5, 2014. Last season, Jones appeared in 48 games for the Cavaliers and averaged 3.7 points in 9.6 minutes, while shooting .394 from the three-point line and .808 from the free throw line. For his career, the 13-year NBA veteran has played in 661 regular season games (91 starts) with averages of 5.4 points and 1.9 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game with Miami, Portland, Phoenix, Indiana and Cleveland.

Jones also played in 12 games during Cleveland’s championship run in the 2016 Playoffs. He has been a member of three NBA title teams (2012, 2013, 2016), appearing in 140 postseason contests over his career.

Cavaliers waive Dahntay Jones

The Cavaliers have waived guard/forward Dahntay Jones, it was announced today by Cavs General Manager David Griffin.

According to the Akron Beacon Journal, today marked “two days before his $1.5 million contract for this season would have become guaranteed.”

Jones was signed by the Cavaliers on April 13, 2016, He had a very limited role on the team and was mostly an observer, appearing in one regular season game and 15 postseason games this past season.

Cavaliers re-sign Richard Jefferson

That whole Richard Jefferson retirement thing didn’t work out

Richard Jefferson’s alleged retirement was short-lived. He’s back for more run with the champs. The Cavaliers re-signed veteran Jefferson today.

“RJ’s versatility on the court and leadership off it were core parts of our identity and success last year,” said Cavaliers General Manager David Griffin. “In many respects, his impact was greater as the stakes got higher. His NBA Finals performance is a testament to his dedicated, steady approach and his presence in our locker room throughout the year and postseason cannot be overstated. We’re very thankful he decided to continue his career and we know that his teammates appreciate what he brings to this team at a very deep level.”

Jefferson (6-7, 233) appeared in 74 games (five starts) during the 2015-16 regular season, averaging 5.5 points on .458 shooting from the field and 1.7 rebounds in 17.9 minutes per game. Over his 15-year career, he has played in 1,082 games (796 starts) with New Jersey (currently Brooklyn), Milwaukee, San Antonio, Golden State, Utah, Dallas and Cleveland, averaging 13.3 points on .464 shooting from the field, 4.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 30.1 minutes per game.

Cavs, Tyronn Lue agree to new contract

The Cavaliers and head coach Tyronn Lue have agreed to a new, multi-year contract, the team announced today.

“Ty took over our team under very trying circumstances and his calm, confident approach was invaluable as we found our way to success,” said General Manager David Griffin. “His vision, leadership and tactical acumen were fundamental to us reaching our goals. We couldn’t be happier to have Ty continue to lead our group into the future.”

According to The Vertical, it’s a five-year deal worth $35 million.

“The opportunity to continue coaching the Cavaliers and this very special group of players is tremendous,” said Lue. “I am extremely appreciative of the effort and commitment that Dan Gilbert, Jeff Cohen, Nate Forbes, and David Griffin showed in extending my contract. Cleveland fans are the best in sports and I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this very special community. I am focused on helping this organization continue to grow and look forward to more success for our team and our fans.”

According to ESPN.com, “Lue did not sign a new contract when he was promoted from associate head coach to take over for David Blatt in January, sources previously told ESPN.”

Lue was promoted from associate head coach to head coach on January 22, 2016, thus becoming the 20th head coach in franchise history. The Cavs went on to finish the 2015-16 season with the best record in the Eastern Conference (57-25) and the franchise’s first ever NBA Championship.

During the 2016 Playoffs, Lue became the first head coach in league history to win his first 10 postseason games, as Cleveland would go on to finish a franchise-best 16-5 in their title run. After the Cavaliers defeated Golden State 4-3 in the 2016 NBA Finals, Lue became the fourth-youngest head coach to win an NBA title and just the third coach to win a championship after taking over a team mid-season, joining Pat Riley (2006 and 1982) and Paul Westhead (1980). The Cavaliers also became the first team to overcome a 3-1 deficit in Finals history and the fourth team to win an NBA Finals Game 7 on the road.

Cavaliers sign Chris Andersen

The Birdman has flown to Cleveland.

The Cavaliers have signed center Chris Andersen, the team announced today.

Andersen (6-10, 245) split time between Memphis and Miami last season, appearing in 27 games (15 starts) with averages of 3.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in 14.9 minutes. Over his 14-year NBA career, he holds averages of 5.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 17.8 minutes over 683 games (45 starts) with Denver, New Orleans, Miami and Memphis. Andersen has a career field goal percentage of .533, having hit at least .500 from the field in each of the last eight seasons.

A native of Long Beach, Calif., Andersen won an NBA Championship with Miami in 2013 and set an NBA playoff record by shooting .807 (46-57) from the field over 20 games during the Heat’s title run (minimum 20 FGA). Overall, he has appeared in 73 career postseason games (two starts), averaging 5.3 points on .631 shooting from the field, 5.0 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 17.1 minutes.

Andersen will wear jersey number 00 for the Cavaliers.

Sixers, Cavs trade Sasha Kaun, Chukwudiebere Maduabum

The Philadelphia 76ers have acquired center Sasha Kaun and cash considerations from the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for the rights to Chukwudiebere Maduabum.

Kaun (6-11, 260) appeared in 25 games for Cleveland in the 2015-16 season and averaged one point and one rebound in four minutes per contest. The native of Russia was originally selected by Seattle with the 56th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft after a four-year collegiate career at the University of Kansas.
