Warriors trade Andrew Bogut to Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have acquired center Andrew Bogut along with a future second-round pick from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for a future conditional second-round pick.

“Andrew played a vital role in our success as a team the last several seasons,” said Warriors General Manager Bob Myers. “His unique skill set on both ends of the floor enabled our team — and his teammates in particular — to thrive. We thank him for his contributions and wish him the best of luck in Dallas.”

According to the Dallas Morning News, “the Mavericks had enough cap space to absorb Bogut’s $11 million salary. He will be a free agent next summer, meaning he won’t clog up cap room. To facilitate the arrival of star free agent Kevin Durant, the Warriors had to shed Bogut’s contract. Durant announced early Monday that he was bolting from Oklahoma City to sign a two-year, $54 million deal with the Warriors.”

Bogut (7-0, 260) is an 11-year veteran with career averages of 10.3 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.6 blocks and 29.4 minutes per game in 644 games (630 starts) with Milwaukee and Golden State. He earned All-NBA Third Team honors with the Bucks in 2009-10 and was named NBA All-Defensive Second Team with the Warriors in 2014-15. He was also a member of the Warriors’ 2015 NBA championship team.

A native of Melbourne, Australia, Bogut was selected by Milwaukee with the first overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft. He became the first Australian ever taken with the top pick. Bogut appeared in all 82 games for the Bucks in 2005-06, earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors after finishing the season with averages of 9.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. He averaged a double-double in three consecutive seasons with Milwaukee from 2008-11. In 2009-10, Bogut averaged a career-high 15.9 points to go along with 10.2 rebounds per game en route to being named All-NBA Third Team.

Bogut was traded along with Stephen Jackson to the Warriors in exchange for Monta Ellis, Kwame Brown and Ekpe Udoh on March 13, 2012. He made his debut with the team the following season (2012-13), and the Warriors went on to reach the postseason in each of the next four years (2013-16). After winning a title with Golden State in 2014-15, Bogut helped the Warriors win an NBA-record 73 games in 2015-16 and reach the Finals for the second straight year. Bogut suffered a left knee injury in Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals and was forced to miss the remainder of the series.

Bogut played collegiately at Utah, where he was named the Naismith College Player of the Year and won the John R. Wooden Award as a sophomore in 2004-05. The 7-footer declared for the NBA Draft following his sophomore season.

Mavs will likely land Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut

The Warriors are going to sign Kevin Durant. That’s the biggest news of the summer, and it’ll remain that way, unless LeBron James decides to leave the Cavs. Which is definitely not likely. Here’s ESPN.com reporting:

The Dallas Mavericks will be adding a pair of Golden State Warriors — forward Harrison Barnes and center Andrew Bogut — in the wake of Kevin Durant’s decision, according to league sources.

The Warriors and Mavs have agreed to a trade that will send Bogut into Dallas’ cap space, according to league sources. The Mavs also reached a verbal agreement on a four-year, $94 million maximum deal with Barnes.

Sources told ESPN that the Warriors will renounce their rights to Barnes as a restricted free agent with Durant heading to Golden State, meaning there will be no three-day waiting period while his previous team ponders whether to match the offer.

Mavs center Salah Mejri undergoes knee surgery

The Dallas Mavericks announced today that center Salah Mejri underwent arthroscopic surgery for a right knee debridement this morning. The surgery was performed by team physician Dr. Daniel Worrel at The Carrell Clinic in Dallas.

Mejri (7-2, 235) averaged 3.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and 11.7 minutes per game in 34 games (six starts) as a rookie with Dallas last season.

JJ Barea had surgery in April

Here’s the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reporting on Mavericks guard Jose Juan Barea:

Barea said he underwent arthroscopic surgery in April to repair his right medial meniscus. The 10-year veteran added that only rest – not surgery –was needed to repair the strained right groin injury that nagged him during the latter stages of the regular season and throughout the Mavericks’ five-game first-round playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

“I just had one knee scope the day after the season, and it was awesome,’’ Barea. “It was real quick and I’m good to go.’’

Barea played in Dirk Nowitzki’s Heroes Celebrity Baseball Game this past Friday night and walked away without any complications from his surgery. He also played a few games of knockouts with some kids at the Mavs’ Hoop Camp on Monday morning at the University of Texas at Dallas.

On the future of Dirk Nowitzki

It’s safe to say that Dirk Nowitzki’s entire NBA playing career will be with the Dallas Mavericks. The only question now is how many more years Dirk will play and what his contract will look like. Here’s the Dallas Morning News with the latest:

Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki has previously said that he is going to opt out of the final season of his three-year contract. He also has reiterated what he’s said all along — that he’s only doing so to help get the wheels in motion for putting together next season’s roster.

Nowitzki planned on re-signing with the Mavericks after July 1, probably for two seasons, he said on KTCK-AM 1310 The Ticket early May.

Wednesday, Nowitzki joined the “Ben & Skin” show on KRLD-FM 105.3 The Fan and said he hasn’t completely made up his mind on opting out of his deal with Dallas. Nowitzki, who already has met with general manager Donnie Nelson and says he’ll meet with owner Mark Cuban soon, has until the final week of June to accept or decline his player option.

Devin Harris has surgery on toe and thumb

Dallas Mavericks guard Devin Harris had a busy morning, undergoing surgery on the big toe of his left foot and on his left thumb.

The surgery on Harris’s left big toe was performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley while the surgery on his left thumb was executed by Dr. Michelle Carlson. Both surgeries were performed at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Harris (6-3, 185) recently finished his 12th NBA season and averaged 7.6 points, 1.8 assists, 0.9 steals and 20.0 minutes in 64 games with the Mavericks.

Charlie Villanueva suggests Russell Westbrook take his dancing to a club

Look. The NBA playoffs are very competitive, but there’s still an occasional opportunity for players to give helpful advice to guys on other teams. The latest generocity comes from Charlie Villanueva, who offers a useful tip to Russell Westbrook. Via ESPN.com:

Charlie Villanueva has a simple request for Russell Westbrook: Find somewhere else to dance.

The Dallas Mavericks reserve forward and Oklahoma City Thunder superstar guard had a minor confrontation before Monday’s Game 2, after Villanueva stepped between Westbrook and rookie guard Cameron Payne during their normal pregame dance routine in front of the scorer’s table at midcourt.

Villanueva, who was shoved by Westbrook but didn’t push back, weighed in Tuesday after video of the incident went viral.

“If you want to go dancing and stuff like that, go to a nightclub,” Villanueva said on a Fox Pro Cast video he filmed.

J.J. Barea will miss Mavs-Thunder Game 2

Here’s the Oklahoman with an update on the Thunder first round playoff opponent, the Dallas Mavericks:

The injuries are piling up for Dallas.

While his teammates took shots at the end of practice Sunday, Mavericks guard J.J. Barea sat on the sideline with his hat on backwards in his team apparel. Barea, who came into Game 1 against the Thunder nursing a right groin strain, said there was “no way” he’d play in Game 2 after re-aggravating the injury in the first half Saturday night.

Here’s ESPN.com reporting on the Dallas Mavericks, who can use all the help they can get in the health department while battling the heavily-favored Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the 2016 Playoffs:

Dallas Mavericks guard J.J. Barea’s status for Game 2 is in question after he aggravated his strained groin during Saturday’s 108-70 Game 1 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Barea did not play in the second half because of the injury, the same one that had limited him in recent weeks.

“I’m very, very concerned,” Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said.
