The Golden State Warriors want a new arena, located in San Francisco. Here’s CSN Bay Area with the latest news on that front, which bodes well for the team:

Latest on Warriors quest for new arena in San Francisco

Not long after the Warriors were honored Monday at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon in San Francisco, the office of Mayor Ed Lee announced a partnership that it believes will clear a major hurdle to the team building a new arena in the city.

The mayor, the Warriors and the University of California, San Francisco, have reached agreement on several issues related to the billion-dollar sports and entertainment complex arena the Warriors propose in the Mission Bay district.

Insofar as Mayor Lee and the Warriors have been driving the deal from the start, the most notable aspect of this accord is an official endorsement from UCSF.

Steve Kerr will take time off from Warriors for back rehab

The Golden State Warriors announced today that Head Coach Steve Kerr, who underwent surgery on his back to repair a ruptured disc in late July and a follow-up surgery in early September, will take a leave of absence from the team as he continues with rehabilitation and the recovery process. The length of Kerr’s absence is unknown and will be based on his progress.

“At this point, the most important thing is to make sure Steve is healthy, completely recovered and ready for not only the rigors of a long NBA season, but day-to-day life in general,” said Warriors General Manager Bob Myers. “We don’t anticipate the recovery process will be long term, but as of today we don’t know the exact timeframe. We’ll evaluate his progress daily and provide updates as necessary.”

“After the first two days of training camp, I realized I need to take a step back and focus on my rehabilitation in order to be ready for the grind of another NBA season,” said Kerr. “As I noted last week, my summer was difficult and no fun due to the multiple back surgeries. At this point, I simply want to get healthy and back to my normal daily routine on and off the court.”

Luke Walton, the team’s lead assistant coach, will serve as interim head coach in Kerr’s absence.

Warriors will receive NBA championship rings on opening night

The NBA Champion Golden State Warriors will receive their 2014-15 NBA Championship rings during a special pregame ceremony on Opening Night on Tuesday, October 27 when the team hosts the New Orleans Pelicans to tip-off the 2015-16 campaign, it was announced today.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, along with Warriors co-owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, will present last season’s players and coaches with unique diamond-clad rings crafted by Jason of Beverly Hills.

The Warriors, who won a franchise record 67 games last season and captured the team’s first NBA title in 40 years, will also unveil the 2014-15 NBA Championship banner at Oracle Arena during the pregame ceremony.

The Warriors, who became the fifth team in NBA history to win four or more NBA titles, will commemorate the team’s 2014-15 NBA Championship by wearing special NBA Championship uniforms.

Warriors sign Ben Gordon

Warriors sign Ben Gordon

The Golden State Warriors have signed free agent guard Ben Gordon to a contract.

After establishing himself as a terrific scorer — especially in 4th quarters — in the early part of his NBA career, Gordon has fallen off the basketball map in recent seasons.

Gordon, 32, spent the 2014-15 season with the Orlando Magic, averaging 6.2 points and 1.1 rebounds in 14.1 minutes over 56 games. An 11-year NBA veteran, Gordon holds career averages of 14.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 27.4 minutes over 744 games (269 starts) with the Chicago Bulls (2004-09), Detroit Pistons (2009-12), Charlotte Bobcats (2012-14) and Magic. In 29 career postseason games (all with Chicago), the 6’3” guard has tallied averages of 20.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 37.8 minutes. Originally selected by the Bulls with the third overall pick of the 2004 NBA Draft, Gordon won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award as a rookie in 2004-05 and ranks 12th among active players in three-point percentage (.401).

Gordon will wear #7. The Warriors roster currently stands at 20 players.

Warriors championship core returns

Here’s the San Francisco Chronicle with a mention of the Spurs before reviewing Golden State Warriors roster changes this offseason, which were relatively minor:

The Spurs made a lot of offseason noise, adding Aldridge and David West while retaining Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green, and the Warriors stood pretty much pat. They’ll report to the team’s downtown Oakland facility Monday for physicals and media day with 12 of the 15 players from last season’s championship-winning roster.

“Once the season starts, nobody cares about all of the hype and all of the talk,” Kerr said Friday. “You just go out and play. We’re the defending champs. That’s a feather in our cap, and it should give us confidence, but all of the talk means nothing.”

Gone are David Lee, Justin Holiday and Ognjen Kuzmic. Arriving are Jason Thompson, Kevon Looney and a 15th roster spot that could go to any one of five training-camp invitees.

Lee was traded to Boston for Gerald Wallace and Chris Babb, and Wallace later was swapped to Philadelphia for Thompson. He’s expected to take over Lee’s role, splitting backup minutes at center with Festus Ezeli and at forward with Marreese Speights.
Kuzmic, a developmental center, signed to play in Greece, and the Warriors have a new project in Looney.

Jason Richardson retires from NBA

Jason Richardson, aka J-Rich, was a dunk phenom and a mighty fine basketball player. Between 2001 and 2015 he averaged 17.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. A fantastic NBA career is in the books. Here’s the Philadelphia Inquirer blog reporting:

The thought was that Jason Richardson would extend his career as a member of the Atlanta Hawks.

But the shooting guard, who was with 76ers the past three seasons, announced his retirement Wednesday on his personal Instagram page.

“Today is a bitter sweet moment for me,” he wrote. “ I’m officially announcing my retirement from pro basketball. I like to thank the organizations and fans in Charlotte, Phoenix, Orlando, Philly and especially The Bay Area for their loyal support the past 14 years. Walking away was the hardest decision I had to make but choosing my health and spending time with my family is more important to me! God bless!”

This announcement comes after Richardson had signed a non-guaranteed, one-year deal with the Hawks for the league minimum back in August.
