Oracle CEO Larry Ellison interested in buying Golden State Warriors

The AP reports:

Oracle Corp. CEO Larry Ellison said Wednesday he is interested in buying the Golden State Warriors.

No surprise there.

Ellison told financial analysts he’s trying to buy the team but, he said, “unfortunately you can’t have a hostile takeover of a basketball team.”

The line got laughs because the business software maker is a serial acquirer and won a hostile takeover fight in 2005 for rival PeopleSoft.

“I’ve been hearing this for years,” team president Robert Rowell said. “At some point in time, the media speculation will become a reality. But right now, there’s not much to this.”

Warriors sign Cartier Martin to second 10-day contract

The Golden State Warriors have signed guard/forward Cartier Martin to a second 10-day contract, the team announced today.

Martin, 25, has appeared in four games with Golden State since being called-up from the NBA Development League’s Iowa Energy on January 10, averaging 7.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.00 steal in 30.8 minutes during those four contests.

The Warriors roster remains at 17 players. Due to injuries, they have permission to exceed the league maximum of 15.

Warriors sign Anthony Tolliver to 10-day contract

Warriors sign Anthony Tolliver to 10-day contract

The Golden State Warriors have signed forward Anthony Tolliver to a 10-day contract, the team announced today.

Tolliver, 24, is a call-up from the NBA Development League’s Idaho Stampede, where he has appeared in 14 games this season, averaging 21.4 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.29 steals and 1.21 blocks in 35.0 minutes per contest.  Amongst D-League statistical leaders, he currently ranks eighth in scoring and third in rebounding.  A 6-9, 240-pound forward, Tolliver was called-up earlier this season by the Portland Trail Blazers on December 17 and appeared briefly in two games before being waived on December 29.

Last season, Tolliver split time between the D-League and the San Antonio Spurs, for whom he played 19 games and averaged 2.7 points and 2.2 rebounds in 10.9 minutes per contest.  A graduate of Creighton University, Tolliver went undrafted in the 2007 NBA Draft and began his professional career in 2007-08 with the D-League’s Iowa Energy.

Golden State’s roster now stands at 17 players. The Warriors are able to add Tolliver to the roster under the NBA’s hardship rules, which allow a team the ability to sign an additional player if that team already has 15 players on its Active and Inactive Lists and has four-or-more players unable to perform playing services due to injury or illness for an extended period of time.  Golden State currently has two additional players on its roster under the NBA’s hardship rules, as the team has no fewer than five players out with injury for an extended period.

Tolliver will wear uniform #44.

Anthony Randolph out 2 months

Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle reports:

Anthony Randolph out 2 months

Anthony Randolph is the latest player in the Warriors’ string of long-term medical woes. He is projected to miss about two months with multiple left ankle injuries, the team announced before Monday’s game against Cleveland.

An MRI exam revealed Randolph has two torn ligaments on the outside of the ankle and an avulsion fracture where an inside ligament pulled away from the bone. He’ll be in a protective boot for three weeks before starting rehabilitation, which usually takes at least four weeks for similar injuries.

“I expected it to be a long time, and I think it will be,” coach Don Nelson said. “I wouldn’t call it season-ending, but I think it will be pretty close.”

Warriors sign Cartier Martin to 10-day contract

The Golden State Warriors have signed guard/forward Cartier Martin to a 10-day contract, the team announced today.

Martin, 25, is a call-up from the NBA Development League’s Iowa Energy, where he has appeared in 12 games this season, averaging 14.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.17 steals in 27.1 minutes per contest.  A 6-7, 220-pound swingman who went undrafted out of Kansas State in 2007, Martin began last season with the Energy before being called-up by the Charlotte Bobcats, for whom he played 33 games and averaged 2.6 points and 1.0 rebound in 8.1 minutes per contest.

This past summer, Martin was a member of the Warriors Summer League Team in Las Vegas, where he averaged 19.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.33 steals and 1.00 block in 29.3 minutes over three games.  With his signing, Martin becomes the fifth player to receive a Gatorade Call-Up from the D-League this season.

Golden State’s roster now stands at 16 players.  The Warriors are able to add Martin to the roster under the NBA’s hardship rules, which allow a team the ability to sign an additional player if that team already has 15 players on its Active and Inactive Lists and has four-or-more players unable to perform playing services due to injury or illness for an extended period of time.

Martin will wear uniform #20.

Corey Maggette playing well for Warriors

Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle reports:

Corey Maggette stepping up

With the Warriors in desperate need of some help for Ellis, Maggette has elevated his game to a new level.

He has scored at least 20 points in nine of his last 10 games. After getting booed by home fans for taking long jumpers early in the season, Maggette has been determined to pound into the paint.

“What can I tell you? He’s playing at a high level,” coach Don Nelson said. “He has been quite an anchor.”

Maggette’s new strategy leaves the 30-year-old looking like half mummy and half igloo after games. He does postgame interviews with his legs in buckets of cold water, with ice tightly strapped to his shoulders and around his hamstrings and while massaging his surgically repaired wrist.

Warriors waive Mikki Moore

The Golden State Warriors have waived center Mikki Moore, the team announced today.

Moore, 34, appeared in 23 games with Golden State this season (20 starts), averaging 5.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 17.7 minutes.  A 12-year NBA veteran, Moore underwent surgery to remove bone spurs in his right heel on December 18.

With today’s transaction, Golden State’s roster currently stands at 15 players.

Anthony Randolph blocks 8 shots in start

Marcus Thompson II of the Oakland Tribune reports:

In just his second start of the season, second-year man Anthony Randolph gave the Warriors an immediate defensive presence inside.

Randolph started at center and finished with a career-high eight blocks in the Warriors’ 108-102 loss Wednesday to the New Orleans Hornets. It was the most blocks by a Warrior since Adonal Foyle had nine against New York on Feb. 21, 2003.

Randolph’s six first-quarter blocks were two off the team record for a quarter.

“I feel the (previous) couple games I did poorly on defense,” said Randolph, whose previous career-high was five blocks in a game against San Antonio in March. “I kind of took it upon myself to come out here and try to control the paint and help my teammates out as much as I can when they got beat.”

Gilbert Arenas unleashes 45-point game on Warriors

Michael Lee of the Washington Post reports:

He was driving into the lane, hitting finger rolls and off-balanced runners off the glass. He was completing crossover dribbles, stepping back and draining three-pointers, and confidently whirling back with his hand raised high. And, he was setting up teammates with open jumpers and layups.

More importantly, Gilbert Arenas was smiling, having fun and cracking jokes with his teammates. Arenas was playing freely and delivered the type of flashback performance for a full game that the Washington Wizards have only seen glimpses of ever since his left knee betrayed him more than two years ago. Feeling unburdened back in his native West Coast, Arenas erupted for season-highs of 45 points and 13 assists as he led the Wizards to a 118-109 victory over the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena on Friday.

“I’ve been the coy fish for a couple of games. I’m just trying to get back in attack mode,” Arenas, a native of Los Angeles, said. “Since I came on this West Coast trip, I don’t have that pressure of Washington standing on my shoulders. I get to play freely and game by game, since we’ve been on this trip, I felt good.”

Mikki Moore out 3+ months after right ankle surgery

Mikki Moore out 3+ months after right ankle surgery

Golden State Warriors center Mikki Moore underwent successful surgery today to remove bone spurs in his right ankle, the team announced. The surgery was performed by Dr. David Porter in Indianapolis, IN.  Moore is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of three (3) months.

This season Moore was not contributing a lot to the Warriors, averaging 5.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in 17.7 minutes per game.

With a 7-18 record, the Warriors are currently 14th out of 15 Western conference teams, ahead of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
