Bucks waive two players

The Milwaukee Bucks have requested waivers on guards Ron Howard and Kevin Kruger, General Manager John Hammond announced today.

In three preseason games with the Bucks, Howard, 25, posted averages of 2.0 points and 1.0 assist per game.

Kruger, 25, played in two games for the Bucks and averaged 4.0 points, 1.5 assists and 1.0 rebound per game.

The Bucks roster currently stands at 16 players.

Oct 17: Warriors 109, Bucks 108

For Golden State, Stephen Jackson shot 9-of-14 for 24 points and 4 assists, though he had 6 turnovers. Corey Maggette had 14 points, 4 rebounds, no assists and 5 turnovers. CJ Watson, off the bench, shot 4-of-13 for 14 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals. Brandan Wright, off the bench, had 14 points. Andris Biedrins had 13 with 11 rebounds. And DeMarcus Nelson scored 10 off the bench. As a team, the Warriors had 28 turnovers. For Milwaukee, Charlie Villanueva shot 11-of-18 for 26 points and 8 rebounds. Michael Redd shot 8-of-14 for 23 points. Joe Alexander shot 7-of-13 for 14 off the bench. Richard Jefferson shot 3-of-10 for 13 points and 7 assists. Andrew Bogut shot badly but grabbed 9 rebounds.

Oct 15: Bucks 98, Warriors 94

The AP reports: Andrew Bogut scored 18 points and Luke Ridnour added 16 Wednesday night, leading the Milwaukee Bucks past the Golden State Warriors 98-94 in an NBA exhibition game. Milwaukee trailed most of the night but Bogut took control in the second half with 13 points. Kelenna Azubuike led the Warriors with 24 points while Corey Maggette added 16… Bucks rookie Joe Alexander, who finished with 11 points, was the crowd favorite in this southern Chinese city. He’s the first NBA player to be born in Taiwan and can speak Mandarin.

China loves Joe Alexander

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (Charles F. Gardner) reports: It didn’t take long for Milwaukee Bucks rookie Joe Alexander to be discovered by the Chinese media. Before the Bucks’ practice Tuesday at the Guangzhou Gymnasium, the 6-foot-8 Alexander was swarmed by a huge group of reporters. His fluency in Mandarin was one reason for his popularity, and the fact he spent much of his youth living in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taiwan. “They enjoyed me a little bit,” Alexander said in a phone interview. “There was a pretty fair amount (of media), more than I’m used to.”

Oct 11: Pistons 111, Bucks 99

The AP reports: Arron Afflalo scored 28 points and Rodney Stuckey added 15 to help the Detroit Pistons remain perfect in the preseason with a 111-99 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night… Charlie Villanueva led the Bucks (0-4) with 26 points and Michael Redd had 17.

InsideHoops.com editor says: Even though it’s just a preseason game, Afflalo putting up 28 points is a nice sign for Detroit.

Oct 10: Mavs 105, Bucks 79

The AP reports: Jason Terry scored 15 points, including a 40-foot 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer, in the Dallas Mavericks’ 105-79 preseason victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night… Dirk Nowitzki added 11 points in 18 minutes for Dallas (3-0). Jerry Stackhouse also scored 11 points for the Mavs, who led by as many as 25 in the third quarter. Andrew Bogut had 10 points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes for the Bucks (0-3). Ramon Sessions led the Bucks with 11 points, while Luc Mbah a Moute added 10 in 33 minutes. Richard Jefferson, acquired in an offseason trade with New Jersey for Bobby Simmons and Yi Jianlian, scored nine points for Milwaukee.

Bucks waive TJ Cummings

The Milwaukee Bucks have requested waivers on forward T.J. Cummings, General Manager John Hammond announced today.

In one preseason game with the Bucks, Cummings scored four points while adding one rebound, one assist and one steal.  Cummings, 27, signed a free agent contract with Milwaukee on October 2.

The Bucks preseason roster currently stands at 18.

Oct 8: Pistons 85, Bucks 71

The AP reports: Arron Afflalo said: “I’m going to find ways to take advantage of what I can do offensively.” He did just that Wednesday, leading the Pistons with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor and connected on all three of his 3-point attempts… The Bucks were missing several key players, including first-round pick Joe Alexander (abdominal strain), Richard Jefferson (quad), Luke Ridnour (knee) and Charlie Bell (Achilles tendinitis). Andrew Bogut played after missing Milwaukee’s first preseason game because of a migraine, but finished with just seven points… Charlie Villanueva had 20 points for Milwaukee and Malik Allen added 18.

Oct 6: Wolves 117, Bucks 79

The AP reports: Rookie Kevin Love scored 13 points and Mike Miller added 12, lifting the Timberwolves to a 117-79 preseason victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night that made Minnesota’s draft day trade look promising. Al Jefferson chipped in 18 points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes, and the new-look Timberwolves may have acquired enough offensive threats to improve on last season’s 22-60 mark. Love originally was credited with 16 points, but 1 hour, 15 minutes after the game, the official scoring crew took three points away from Love and added them to Corey Brewer’s total, giving him 12… Rashad McCants scored 22 points and Randy Foye 11 for Minnesota. Charlie Villanueva scored 14 points and Matt Freije and Ramon Sessions had 11 each for Milwaukee.

Quick East thoughts

The season is approaching, folks. Training camps open in around one week (I’m in Prague right now, haven’t looked at a calendar in a while. Tuesday I’m off to hang out in Berlin for a week, then about 8 days in Amsterdam. I’ll be back in New York City right around the start of preseason.)

In the east, the Celtics remain the best of the conference, though I wonder if Ray Allen will drop off a bit this season. They also need to improve their bench.

The Pistons bring back last year’s team, with Rasheed Wallace and Chauncey Billups a year older.

The Magic still need to improve their backcourt.

The Cavaliers add scoring punch with the addition of point guard Mo Williams, but it’s still the LeBron James show with a supporting cast that will have to work very hard to carry their weight.

The Wizards must once again play without Gilbert Arenas for a while, though even with him they’re a lower-level playoff team.

The Raptors have to hope Jermaine O’Neal regains former All-Star form; it’ll be tough.

The 76ers added a star by signing power forward Elton Brand, and that should definitely raise them in conference standings.

The Hawks aren’t locks to return to the playoffs, but it’s good they kept Josh Smith.

The Bucks improved on paper, adding a pass-first point guard in Luke Ridnour, but more importantly, a legit good forward in SF Richard Jefferson.

The Knicks have the same talented yet flawed roster, but a new coach. Can Mike D’Antoni work miracles?

The Nets are rebuilding and aside from Vince Carter and young Devin Harris, everyone on the team who matters is young and in development.

The Bulls have the same team as the last few seasons, though Ben Gordon remains unsigned. Will they play like the good Bulls from two years ago, or the disappointing ones from last season? Flip a coin, because they’re capable of going either way.

The Bobcats have nice swingmen in Jason Richardson and Gerald Wallace, plus Emeka Okafor, but everyone else is young and in development.

The Heat could make a leap in the standings now that Dwyane Wade is healthy, plus Shawn Marion needs a new contract, and Michael Beasley doesn’t like losing. The supporting cast is still extremely weak, though.

The Pacers always do a bit better than expected. The bad news is, almost nothing is ever expected. Danny Granger, Mike Dunleavey and TJ Ford are very nice players, though. They may surprise a little, but not a lot.

I’ll share quick West thoughts tomorrow. Right now I’m off to hike up to the Prague castle. I’ll be right here in about an hour.
