Rondo falls at home, suffers broken hand

rajon rondo

This is not the way the Boston Celtics wanted to start 2014-15 training camp, which begins soon.

Once again, Celtics star point guard Rajon Rondo is injured. According to the team, Rondo fell at home, and broke his hand in the process. After surgery today, he’s expected out 6-8 weeks.

A silver lining here is that the Celtics are a rebuilding team, and have plenty of young players to develop. Some of them should benefit from increased minutes due to Rondo being out, namely rookie guard Marcus Smart.

Also, the team may trade Rondo sometime this season. If he can come back, play well and look good, his trade value should remain the same.

Michael Carter-Williams will start slowly as he recovers from surgery

Here’s the Philadelphia Inquirer reporting on the 76ers, whose bright spot in the backcourt, young Michael Carter-Williams, is still recovering from surgery:

michael carter-williams

On Oct. 30, 2013, Michael Carter-Williams torched the Miami Heat for 22 points, 12 assists, 9 steals, and 7 rebounds in his inaugural regular-season game.

There’s a chance that the 76ers’ second-year point guard won’t get a chance to duplicate the feat in his second season opener.

“I don’t know,” coach Brett Brown said Thursday regarding Carter-Williams’ availability for the start of the regular season. “But at the start of our preseason games, I expect to give Tony [Wroten] the ball” at point guard.

Carter-Williams, last season’s rookie of the year, had surgery May 6 to repair the labrum in his right shoulder. He will not be a full participant at training camp, which begins Tuesday at Richard Stockton College in Galloway Township, N.J.

Houston adds Akil Mitchell

Mitchell (6-9, 230, Virginia), appeared in 133 contests and held career averages of 6.9 points on 51.9% FG shooting, 6.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists as a Virginia Cavalier. Over the course of his four year NCAA career, the power forward finished seventh in school history in rebounding (798) and fourth in games played (133). In his senior season, Mitchell was named to the 2013-14 ACC All-Defensive Team.

Martell Webster still healing from surgery

Martell Webster still healing from surgery

Martell Webster has an uphill battle in front of him. Historically, back injuries have marred professional athletes’ careers and the swingman is rehabbing from his third back surgery in four years before his 28th birthday.

Webster’s experience is so noteworthy that he was invited to Capitol Hill earlier this month to participate in a panel discussion with the Arthritis Foundation to discuss back pain and proper care.

As for his work on the court, the Wizards remain unsure when Webster will be cleared to return. Webster had the surgery on June 27 and was given a diagnosis of three to five months recovery.
