OJ Mayo suspended for striking Greg Stiemsma

Milwaukee Bucks guard O.J. Mayo has been suspended one game without pay for forcibly striking New Orleans Pelicans center Greg Stiemsma in the throat, it was announced today by Rod Thorn, President, Basketball Operations.
The incident, for which Mayo was assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 and ejected occurred with 1:52 remaining in the first quarter of Milwaukee’s 112-104 loss to the Pelicans on Friday, March 7, at Smoothie King Center.
Mayo will serve his suspension tonight when the Bucks host the Washington Wizards at BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday out for season

Already facing a tough season with some key injuries, the 23-34 New Orleans Pelicans just lost a key piece to their puzzle.
The Pelicans announced today that guard Jrue Holiday underwent a successful surgery to correct a stress fracture in his right tibia. He will miss the remainder of the season.
In 34 games played for the Pelicans this season, Holiday has averaged 14.3 points, 7.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game in 33.6 minutes. He last appeared for New Orleans on January 8th, 2014 and has missed the ensuing 23 games.

With Thursday’s trade deadline approaching, speculation persists about the New Orleans Pelicans’ front office listening to offers for Eric Gordon and Tyreke Evans.
But Pelicans coach Monty Williams said after Monday’s practice that he expects for both players to still be with the team after the trade deadline passes.
”I don’t know where all that stuff comes from man,’’ Williams said. ”It’s silly to me to put guys names out there like that. I don’t know how to answer that.
”I’m focused on tomorrow’s practice. As far as I know, those guys are going to be here. All the trade stuff, I guess there is nothing else to talk about. It’s not something we put a lot of stock into as coaches.’’
Pelicans center Jason Smith out for season after knee surgery

The New Orleans Pelicans announced today that center Jason Smith had successful surgery on Wednesday, January 29 to remove a loose piece of articular cartilage in the non-weight bearing area of his right knee. Smith will miss the remainder of the season, but is expected to make a full recovery,
In 31 games this season, Smith averaged 9.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 0.9 blocks in 26.8 minutes per game. The Colorado State product has appeared in 331 contests in six NBA seasons, averaging 6.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 16.7 minutes per game.
Tyreke Evans puts up huge game for Pelicans

After sitting out of Friday’s win at Detroit with flu-like symptoms, New Orleans Pelicans reserve swingman Tyreke Evans didn’t appear to be ailing Sunday night.
Evans returned to action, scoring a team-high 23 points in the Pelicans’ 100-92 victory against the Orlando Magic at the New Orleans Arena.
“I’m feeling much better,” Evans said. “I had a lot of confidence tonight, and it really helped me out.”
Before Sunday’s game, Evans was put through a rigorous workout by the Pelicans’ coaches in an effort to build up Evans’ stamina. Evans obviously made it through the session and the game just fine.
Playing 28 minutes, Evans also had seven rebounds and seven assists to go along with his point total on 7-of-13 shooting. He also made 9-of-11 free throws.
New Orleans Pelicans mascot Pierre getting a makeover

The New Orleans Pelicans are giving their much-maligned mascot, Pierre the Pelican, a makeover.
The mascot has come under heavy scrutiny and been the butt of jokes since his debut in the season opener Oct. 30 vs. the Indiana Pacers. Pierre’s appearance has drawn national attention, for all the wrong reasons. He’s been panned as a poor man’s knock-off of the famed San Diego Chicken and ridiculed for not looking like, well, a pelican.
A league source said there will be a redesign of Pierre’s head.
Pelicans waive guard Tyshawn Taylor

The New Orleans Pelicans have waived guard Tyshawn Taylor, it was announced today by General Manager Dell Demps.
Taylor, a second round pick by the Nets in the 2012 NBA Draft, holds career averages of 2.9 points, 0.9 assists and 0.4 steals in 61 career contests.
The Pelicans roster stands at 14.
Pelicans center Jason Smith out with knee injury

The New Orleans Pelicans announced today that center Jason Smith will be out indefinitely with a right knee injury. An MRI revealed Smith suffered cartilage damage in his right knee. More details will be released as they become available.
In 31 games (27 starts) this season, Smith is averaging 9.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 0.9 blocks in 26.8 minutes per game. The 7’0” center holds career averages of 6.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 331 games.

The New Orleans Pelicans announced today that Jrue Holiday has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right tibia. He is out indefinitely. This is a big blow to the Pelicans, who have a 15-19 record going into Friday’s games.
In 34 games this season, Holiday is averaging 14.3 points, 7.9 assists and 4.2 rebounds in 33.6 minutes per game. The 6’4” guard holds career averages of 13.5 points, 6.0 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 332 games.
According to the new Orleans Times-Picayune, “it is unclear exactly when Holiday was injured. But he didn’t play in the fourth quarter of the team’s 102-96 loss to the Washington Wizards. In that game, Holiday turned in one of his worst performances of the season, shooting 3-for-11 from the field for eight points. He also had three assists, three rebounds and three steals. Holiday wasn’t available for comment following the Pelicans’ shootaround Friday morning, leading up to their game against the Dallas Mavericks at the New Orleans Arena. But forward/center Jason Smith said the team will have to continue to battle while it is shorthanded.”
According to the Associated Press, “In 34 games this season, the 6-foot-4 Holiday is averaging 14.3 points, 7.9 assists and 4.2 rebounds. His injury comes while New Orleans struggles to overcome the absence of leading scorer Ryan Anderson, who has been out indefinitely with a herniated disk since last weekend.”
