Brandon Ingram returns to action for the Pelicans

Via the New Orleans Times-Picayune:

At the end of the first half, Brandon Ingram lined up a 3-point attempt from the right wing. His shot glanced off the rim, and he reacted by tossing a towel into the stands.

In his first game back after two months away, Ingram understandably showed signs of rust while scoring 13 points.

Ingram did not get much help in his return as the Pelicans fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves 111-102 on Wednesday at Smoothie King Center. It was the slumping Pelicans’ sixth straight defeat…

Ingram, who missed 29 consecutive games with a left toe contusion, shot 4 of 18 from the field. He also grabbed five rebounds and handed out five assists in 26 minutes. He was at his best in the fourth quarter, when he scored six points.

The leading Pelican scorers so far in 2022-23 are Zion Williamson at 26.0 PPG, CJ McCollum at 21.1 PPG, Ingram at 20.8 PPG, and Jonas Valanciunas at 14.8 PPG. The team is now 26-23.

Pelicans coach Willie Green named NBA Western Conference Coach of Month for Dec. 2022

New Orleans Pelicans Head Coach Willie Green has been named the Western Conference Coach of the Month for December 2022, the NBA announced today.

After guiding the Pelicans to a 10-5 record in the month of December, the Pelicans currently sit third in the Western Conference rankings with a 23-14 record, a 10-win improvement from last season and the franchise’s third-best start through 37 games. New Orleans notched two separate five-game winning streaks in December, and finished the month with an 8-1 record at the Smoothie King Center.

During the month of December the Pelicans ranked third in the NBA, averaging 118.3 points per game. New Orleans was the only Western Conference team to finish the month in the top 10 in both offensive (10th) and defensive (6th) rating, and also finished sixth in the NBA and second in Western Conference in net rating (3.3).

Green is the fourth coach in New Orleans franchise history to garner Coach of the Month honors, joining Monty Williams (January 2011), Byron Scott (January 2008, December 2008), and Paul Silas (April 2003).

Larry Nance Jr. playing well as reserve for Pelicans

Via the New Orleans Times-Picayune:

The Pelicans are in first place in the Western Conference. They have ripped off seven straight wins without an injured Brandon Ingram, a winning streak they can attribute to [Zion] Williamson playing like a superstar and their depth, of which Nance is a major part of.

[Larry Nance Jr.] has been one of the NBA’s most valuable reserves this season. He is averaging 9.5 points on 66.4% shooting, 5.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1 steal and 0.9 blocks in 23 minutes. The Pelicans are blasting opponents with him on the floor, outscoring other teams by 11.6 points per 100 possessions.

Pelicans coach Willie Green has chose to use Nance primarily at center. He has spent 90% of his minutes at that position, according to Cleaning the Glass. The Pelicans can switch every ball screen when he’s at center in what they call their “red” defense.
