Sixers trade Kendall Marshall to Jazz for Tibor Pleiss

The 76ers have acquired center Tibor Pleiss (“TEE-bore Plice”), two 2017 second-round draft picks and cash considerations from the Jazz in exchange for Kendall Marshall.

The Sixers will receive the most and least favorable of the four 2017 second-round picks currently held by Utah (their own, in addition to those of Detroit, Golden State and New York).

Pleiss (7’3″, 256lbs) was originally selected with the 31st overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft by the Brooklyn Nets and acquired by the Jazz as part of a three-team trade in February, 2015. He has appeared in 12 career games with Utah, averaging two points and one rebound in seven minutes per game.

Marshall (6-4, 200, North Carolina) is a four-year NBA veteran who has appeared in 160 career games (57 starts) over four seasons with Phoenix, the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee and Philadelphia.

Jazz sign rookie Marcus Paige

The Jazz signed 2016 second-round pick guard Marcus Paige today. He will wear jersey #16.

Paige (6-2, 175) played four seasons at North Carolina, averaging 13.1 points, 4.3 assists and 2.8 rebounds while shooting 37.5 percent from three-point range in 141 career games. He helped lead the Tar Heels to the 2016 NCAA Championship Game. Paige was recognized as an Academic All-American in three seasons, including First Team honors following his senior season. He was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team in 2015 and 2016 as well as the 2014 ACC Most Improved Player of the Year.

The 22-year-old was a member of the Jazz entry at the 2016 Utah Jazz Summer League (July 4-7) and NBA Summer League (July 8-15) in Las Vegas, averaging 7.0 points, 1.6 assists, 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 19.7 minutes of action in nine games. He reached double-figures in back-to-back contests, scoring 10 points against New Orleans on July 10 and 11 points against Portland on July 12.

The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native played high school basketball at Linn-Mar High School in Marion, Iowa, helping them to a 2011 AAAA State Championship. Paige was selected as the 2012 Gatorade Iowa Boys Basketball Player of the Year and Iowa Mr. Basketball.

Jazz sign rookie Joel Bolomboy

The Jazz on Friday signed 2016 second round pick Joel Bolomboy (pronounced “Ball-um-boy”).

A 6-9, 235-pound forward from Weber State University), Bolomboy averaged 17.1 points on 57.3 percent shooting and grabbed 12.6 rebounds (third in the nation) during his senior year, setting a school single-season record by tallying 415 total rebounds. He was named the 2016 Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year and a unanimous All-Conference First Team selection. Bolomboy finished his four-year career as the all-time leader in rebounds for Weber State as well as the Big Sky Conference.

The 22-year-old was a member of the Jazz entry at the 2016 Utah Jazz Summer League (July 4-7) and NBA Summer League (July 8-15) in Las Vegas, averaging 7.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 19.3 minutes of action in nine games. In Las Vegas, he averaged 9.5 points on 53.3 percent shooting, 7.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists in six contests. He recorded one double-double, scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds vs. New Orleans on July 10. In the team’s summer league finale against the L.A. Lakers on July 15, Bolomboy led the Jazz in scoring, recording 20 points, shooting 9-for-12 from the floor, adding seven rebounds, one steal and one block.

Born in the Ukraine, Bolomboy played high school basketball at Keller Central in Fort Worth, Texas.

He will wear jersey #22 for the Jazz.

Salt Lake City Stars name head coach

The Salt Lake City Stars, the NBA Development League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, announced today that Dean Cooper will return as head coach for the team’s inaugural 2016-17 season in Salt Lake City.

Cooper enters his third season as the head coach for the Jazz’s D-League affiliate. Before joining the organization in 2014, Cooper spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the Houston Rockets on Kevin McHale’s staff. He began his NBA career with the Rockets in 1999 as a video coordinator, eventually becoming an assistant coach to Rudy Tomjanovich. When Jeff Van Gundy succeeded Tomjanovich, Cooper transitioned to the front office as a personnel scout for one season before eventually becoming the Director of Scouting (2004-07) and Vice President of Player Personnel (2007-08).

He spent the 2008-09 season as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves when McHale was the interim coach. Following a one-year stint as a regional scout for the Timberwolves (2009-10), Cooper became Director of Player Development for the Portland Trail Blazers under Nate McMillan.

Prior to the NBA, Cooper coached four years at the collegiate level.

The Salt Lake City Stars, the NBA D-League team owned and operated by the Utah Jazz, will play their inaugural season in Utah in 2016-17. The Utah Jazz relocated the Boise-based Idaho Stampede in April 2016 after purchasing the team in March 2015 following a single affiliation agreement for the 2014 season.

Rudy Gobert to play in Olympics for France

Rudy Gobert isn’t waiting until training camp to team up with new Jazzman Boris Diaw.

After sitting out France’s Olympic qualifying games this past week in the Philippines, Gobert announced on Twitter that he intended to play for his country next month at the Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Gobert averaged 9.1 points and 11 rebounds a game last season for the Utah Jazz. The 24-year-old is eligible to begin contract extensions with the club through Oct. 31.

Utah Jazz sign Joe Johnson

The Utah Jazz have signed free-agent guard/forward Joe Johnson.

Johnson’s deal is reportedly a $22 million dollar contract over two years.

Johnson (6-7, 240, Arkansas) is a 15-year veteran and seven-time NBA All-Star who owns career averages of 16.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting .372 from three-point range in 36.0 minutes over 1,143 career games (1,073 starts) with Boston, Phoenix, Atlanta, Brooklyn and Miami. This past season with the Nets and Heat, he averaged 12.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Johnson recorded 10 games of 20-plus points, three double-doubles and 13 games with three-or more three-point field goals made. Johnson has made the playoffs in 11 of his 15 seasons, appearing in 101 career playoff games (95 starts), averaging 16.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

Originally selected in the first round (10th overall) of the 2001 NBA Draft by Boston, Johnson earned All-NBA Third Team honors in 2010 and was selected as an NBA All-Star from 2007-12 as well as in 2014. He has appeared in 79-plus regular season games in 10 different seasons, including all 82 games five times, and ranks ninth on the NBA’s all-time list for both three-pointers made (1,832) and attempted (4,928).

Prior to the NBA, Johnson played two seasons at the University of Arkansas from 1999-01. He averaged 15.0 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 30.3 minutes and was All-SEC Second Team selection by the conference coaches in 2001.

Born in Little Rock, Ark., Johnson played high school basketball at Little Rock Central and was named 1999 Arkansas Mr. Basketball following his senior season. He also won a bronze medal with Team USA at the FIBA World Cup 2006.

He will wear jersey #6 for the Jazz.

Spurs trade Boris Diaw to Jazz

The Utah Jazz announced today that the team has acquired forward Boris Diaw, a 2022 second-round pick and cash considerations from San Antonio in exchange for the player rights to Olivier Hanlan.

Diaw (6-8, 250, France) is a 13-year NBA veteran who holds career averages of 8.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 27.7 minutes in 991 games (530 starts) with Atlanta, Phoenix, Charlotte and San Antonio. Originally selected in the first round (21st overall) of the 2003 NBA Draft by Atlanta, Diaw appeared in 76 games (four starts) for the Spurs this past season, averaging 6.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists on .362 three-point shooting in 18.2 minutes.

A member of the 2014 Spurs championship team, Diaw owns playoff career averages of 9.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 108 games (44 starts) over nine playoff seasons, including appearances in two NBA Finals and four Western Conference Finals. He also received the NBA Most Improved Player Award in 2006 as a member of the Suns.

The Cormeille-en-Parisis, France, native has been a member of the French National Team since 2003. He teamed with countryman and new Jazz teammate Rudy Gobert to lead France to a third-place finish at the 2014 FIBA World Cup and guided the team to its first ever gold medal at the 2013 European Championship.

In 2005, Diaw created Babac’Ards, a not-for-profit organization to help young Senegalese children become productive citizens with a focus on education and basketball. The name is derived from his Senegalese middle name, Babacar. He has also participated in several NBA Basketball Without Borders trips, including one in Paris and Johannesburg, South Africa.

Hanlan, 6-4/190, was selected by Utah in the second round (42nd overall) of the 2015 NBA Draft and spent last season with BC Zalgiris in Kaunas, Lithuania. The Canada native averaged 7.3 points and 2.4 rebounds in 20.7 minutes over 38 games, helping Zalgiris win the Lithuanian Basketball League title. Hanlan played three years (2012-15) at Boston College, where he averaged 17.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 36.0 minutes. The 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year, Hanlan was named to the All-ACC First Team in 2014-15.

Jazz trade Trey Burke to Wizards

Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has acquired guard Trey Burke from the Utah Jazz in exchange for a 2021 second-round pick.

“Trey is a former lottery pick that has had a very good start to his career as a point guard,” said Grunfeld. “We feel fortunate to have the opportunity to add him as our primary backup and feel he will flourish in that role as he continues to develop.”

Burke (6-1, 191) holds career averages of 12.1 points, 4.2 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 210 career games (111 starts) in three seasons with the Jazz. Last season, the former Michigan standout averaged 10.6 points, 2.3 assists and 1.8 rebounds while shooting a career-high .344 from three-point range in 64 games (no starts). He also added 40 double-digit scoring outputs off the bench for the Jazz, including five games of 20 points or more. During the 2014-15 season, Burke made the third-most threes in a single season (124) in Jazz history.

Burke was originally selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the ninth overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft out of the University of Michigan, where he was the consensus 2013 National College Player of the Year and led the Wolverines to the NCAA Championship Game. His draft rights were traded to the Jazz in exchange for the rights to Shabazz Muhammad (14th overall pick) and Gorgui Dieng (21st overall pick). He was named to the 2014 NBA All-Rookie First Team (and also earned Western Conference Rookie of the Month honors three times), after averaging career bests in points (12.8), assists (5.7), rebounds (3.0) and free-throw percentage (.903).

Three team trade sends Jeff Teague to Pacers, George Hill to Jazz

The Atlanta Hawks have acquired the draft rights to Taurean Prince, the 12th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, from the Utah Jazz as part of a three-team trade, it was announced today by General Manager Wes Wilcox. As part of the deal, the Hawks will send guard Jeff Teague to Indiana and the Jazz will receive guard George Hill from the Pacers.

“Taurean has many of the qualities that we value in our program…we are excited to add his competitiveness, toughness, versatility, and desire to improve,” Wilcox said. “We would also like to thank Coach Scott Drew and Baylor Basketball for their help throughout the scouting process. Taurean is eager to get started and we look forward to beginning his development with our coaches and athletic performance team.”

“I would like to thank Jeff for his seven years with the organization, and our three years together,” said Hawks President of Basketball Operations/Head Coach Mike Budenholzer. “Jeff developed into a key contributor and played an integral role in the team’s recent success. We wish him well in the next chapter of his career.”

Prince, a four-year letterman at Baylor, averaged 15.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals in 34 games as a senior while garnering First Team All-Big 12 honors. The 6’8 forward was also named Second Team All-Big 12 as junior as well as the league’s Sixth Man of the Year after recording 13.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.3 assists in 33 contests. Prince owns career averages of 10.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists while shooting .460 from the field, .376 from three-point range and .718 from the free throw line in 129 games.

Teague, an Indianapolis native, comes to the Pacers from the Atlanta Hawks as part of a three-way trade. The Pacers send guard George Hill to Utah and the Jazz send the 12th overall pick in June’s NBA Draft, Baylor’s Taurean Prince, to Atlanta. Young was acquired from Brooklyn in exchange for the Pacers’ first-round pick (20th overall) in the June draft, Michigan’s Caris LeVert.

“We want to thank George for his five seasons with us,” said Pacers President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird. “He’s a great guy who did a lot for the community. We wish him nothing but the best. With Jeff, we think he brings something we haven’t had in a true point guard. We think he fits in with what we’re trying to do. He has speed, the ability to create for others and he can score. We look forward to working with him.

“Thaddeus is a long, athletic power forward who can defend multiple positions. He was a 15-point scorer last year and averaged nine rebounds a game. We think he’s a good fit between Myles (Turner) and Paul (George).”

Teague, 28, grew up in Indianapolis (Pike High School), played collegiately at Wake Forest and was a first-round pick (19th overall) of the Hawks in 2009. In seven seasons with Atlanta, Teague averaged 12.0 points and 5.0 assists. Last season, he averaged 15.7 points and 5.9 assists per game. In 2015, he was named to the NBA All-Star team.

Hill (6-3, 188, IUPUI) appeared in 74 games (73 starts) for the Pacers this season, averaging 12.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting a career-high .408 (128-314) from three-point range in 34.1 minutes of action. Hill’s seventh-seeded Pacers then pushed second-seed Toronto to seven games as he averaged 13.6 points on .481 (13-27) three-point shooting.

Originally selected in the first round (26th overall selection) of the 2008 NBA Draft by San Antonio, the 30-year-old guard has appeared in 550 career games (325 starts) over eight seasons with San Antonio and Indiana, and owns career averages of 11.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists and .376 three-point shooting in 28.8 minutes. His teams have made the playoffs in seven of his eight seasons and he has appeared in a total of 75 playoffs games (64 starts) averaging 12.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.1 steals and a .371 three-point percentage. Hill helped the Indiana Pacers to two straight Eastern Conference Finals appearances in 2013 and 2014.

Prior to the NBA, the Indianapolis native played four seasons at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (2004-08) where he was named The Summit League Player of the Year (2008) and All-Summit League First Team twice (2006, 2008). For his collegiate career, Hill appeared in 94 games and averaged 17.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 33.4 minutes.

He will wear uniform #3 for the Jazz.

Jazz will send Trey Burke to Wizards

The Jazz have way too many point guards. A trade was expected. And that’s what will happen — Trey Burke will become a member of the Jazz. Here’s the Washington Post:

The Washington Wizards, who missed out on signing four-time All-Star Al Horford on Saturday, made multiple moves Sunday to improve their depth.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, Washington acquired Utah Jazz guard Trey Burke in exchange for a 2021 second-round pick. The news came shortly after Wojnarowski reported the team had agreed to a four-year, $26 million deal with former Orlando Magic forward Andrew Nicholson.

Nicholson, who averaged 6.9 points and 3.6 rebounds per game last season, was the team’s second free agent pickup in as many days. The 6-foot-9 Canadian reserve played collegiately at St. Bonaventure and was the 19th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.
