Utah Jazz waive Brian Cook, Dominic McGuire, Justin Holiday, Lester Hudson and Scott Machado

The Utah Jazz announced today that the team has waived forwards Brian Cook and Dominic McGuire, and guards Justin Holiday, Lester Hudson and Scott Machado. Following the moves, Utah’s roster now stands at 15 players.

The Jazz will tip off its 40th NBA campaign against Northwest Division rival Oklahoma City Thunder on October 30 at EnergySolutions Arena at 7 p.m. MT (ROOT, 1280 AM/97.5 FM).

Cook (6-9, 251, Illinois) appeared in six preseason games for Utah, averaging 6.2 points and 1.8 rebounds in 10.7 minutes per game. McGuire (6-9, 231, Fresno State) saw action in five preseason games, averaging 2.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in 10.4 minutes. Holiday (6-6, 176, Washington) played in seven preseason contests, averaging 3.4 points in 10.4 minutes. Hudson (6-3, 209, Tennessee-Martin) averaged 4.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 14.8 minutes in five preseason games, while Machado (6-1, 203, Iona) made six preseason appearances, averaging 1.3 points, 1.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 11.5 minutes.

Utah Jazz sign Jamaal Tinsley

Crafty veteran point guard Jamaal Tinsley is back in the NBA.

The Utah Jazz announced today that the team has signed Tinsley, who we assume will be making the league minimum.

Tinsley (6-3, 188, Iowa State) has appeared in 539 games (399 starts) over 10 NBA seasons with Indiana, Memphis and Utah and owns career averages of 8.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.4 steals. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native re-joins Utah after having spent each of the last two seasons in a Jazz uniform, playing in a total of 103 games (33 starts) and averaging 3.6 points, 4.0 assists and 1.6 rebounds in 16.8 minutes per game during that span. Tinsley saw action in 66 games (32 starts) for the Jazz during the 2012-13 season, averaging 3.5 points, 4.4 assists, 1.7 rebounds and 1.0 steal in 18.5 minutes, his highest totals in every category (other than scoring) since 2007-08. He also ranked 18th (tied) in the NBA in assists-per-turnover rate at 2.74. As a starter, Tinsley posted a 20-12 record while averaging 4.8 points, 5.4 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 23.8 minutes.

The former Iowa State product was originally selected by the Vancouver Grizzlies in the first round (27th overall) of the 2001 NBA Draft. He has twice ranked in the NBA’s Top 10 in assists (2001-02, 2002-03) and steals (2002-03, 2006-07) and was a 2002 NBA All-Rookie Second Team selection. Tinsley was also the top overall pick in the 2011 NBA Development League Draft by the Los Angeles D-Fenders and appeared in eight games before signing with the Jazz prior to the 2011-12 season.

Utah Jazz to add Jamaal Tinsley

It seemed like veteran point guard Jamaal Tinsley’s time in the NBA had wrapped up. But the Utah Jazz have reportedly decided they can make use of his services. Here is Jody Genessy of the Deseret News:

Marvin Williams was surprised by the news. Derrick Favors was all for it. Coach Tyrone Corbin and general manager Dennis Lindsey were evasive because it’s not yet official.

And the guy who’ll have another experienced player competing for his point guard minutes?

Current Jazz starter John Lucas III was both diplomatic and optimistic about the impending addition of 10-year NBA veteran Jamaal Tinsley, an impending acquisition that was confirmed to the Deseret News after Wednesday’s deadline.

The move was deemed necessary in the aftermath of point guard Trey Burke fracturing his right index finger two weeks ago. The rookie was dubbed as the Jazz’s starter but could be sidelined for six weeks or more, pending how his shooting hand responds to last Tuesday’s surgery.

Utah Jazz sign Derrick Favors to contract extension

The Utah Jazz announced today that the team has signed forward/center Derrick Favors to a multi-year contract extension. According to Yahoo Sports, the deal is for four years, $49 million.

That’s a lot of money for a young player who, while capable of rebounding, shot-blocking and playing good defense, still has a lot of developing to do.

According to Yahoo, “the deal includes bonus incentives that could push the package well over $50 million, sources said.”

“We have tremendous respect for and confidence in Derrick and see him as an important part of our future. He brings a toughness and defensive mindset that make him a key piece to what we are trying to build here,” said Jazz General Manager Dennis Lindsey. “Derrick is also a high-character individual and he has shown a dedication to continue to improve all aspects of his game.”

The 22-year-old Favors (6-10, 248, Georgia Tech) will be entering his fourth NBA campaign in 2013-14, and has improved his averages in every major statistical category over the previous year each of the last two seasons. Favors played in 77 games (eight starts) in 2012-13, averaging career-highs of 9.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.69 blocks in 23.2 minutes per game. Favors registered nine double-doubles on the season, scoring in double figures 34 times while grabbing double-digit rebounds in 16 games. In his eight starts last season, Favors averaged 10.1 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 2.25 blocks in 27.3 minutes.

Noted for his defensive mindset, Favors was chosen to participate in the 2013 USA Basketball Men’s National Team Mini-Camp held this past July in Las Vegas, Nev. The previous summer Favors was one of just 13 players chosen for the 2012 USA Men’s Select Team that trained against the USA Basketball Men’s National Team prior to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

“We have been impressed with Derrick’s hard work, development and strong desire to be a part of the future of the Jazz franchise,” said Steve Miller, President of Miller Sports Properties. “There was mutual interest in Derrick remaining part of our team moving forward and my family and I are excited to be able to announce his contract extension.”

A 2010 first-round pick (third overall) by New Jersey, Favors was acquired by the Jazz on February 23, 2011 and was selected to the NBA’s All-Rookie Second Team following his first year. During his second season with Utah, Favors was chosen to compete in the Rising Stars Challenge during 2012 NBA All-Star Weekend in Orlando. The Atlanta native and former MVP of the McDonald’s All-American Game was selected as the 2010 ACC Rookie of the Year during his lone collegiate season at Georgia Tech.

“I would like to thank the Miller family and Jazz organization for their trust and confidence in me and my abilities to help lead this team into the future,” said Favors. “Utah has become my home and I am excited to be able to continue my career playing for the Jazz and the best fans in the NBA.”

Jazz rookie Trey Burke has finger surgery

The following is a medical update on Utah Jazz point guard Trey Burke, who fractured his right index finger during the first half of Saturday’s preseason game vs. the Los Angeles Clippers:

Burke underwent surgery Tuesday to repair the bone fracture in his right index finger. The procedure was performed in Salt Lake City by Dr. Douglas Hutchinson, who reported that the surgery was successful.

Following the procedure, Burke’s index finger was placed in a cast/splint where it will remain for approximately three weeks, at which time he will be re-evaluated by Dr. Hutchinson. Burke will be able to participate in conditioning work during this time period.

He will not travel with the team on its upcoming four-game road trip (October 20-25) that concludes the 2013 preseason schedule.

Selected in the first round (ninth overall pick) of the 2013 NBA Draft, Burke (6-1, 190, Michigan) was acquired by the Jazz in a draft-night trade with Minnesota. Burke spent two seasons at the University of Michigan, where as a sophomore, the point guard led Michigan to the 2013 NCAA Championship Game and was the consensus selection as 2013 National Player of the Year. Burke averaged 18.6 points, 6.7 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from three-point range in 38 games his sophomore season. His 255 assists set a new Michigan single-season assist record while his 3.02 assist-to-turnover ratio ranked fifth-best in the nation. He also hit the game-tying three pointer to force overtime in a win over Kansas to advance the Wolverines to the Elite Eight.

Utah Jazz waive Dwayne Jones II

The Utah Jazz announced today that the team has waived center/forward Dwayne Jones II. Following the move, the Jazz roster now stands at 19 players.

Jones II (6-11, 250, Saint Joseph’s) appeared in one preseason game for Utah.

As NBA preseason continues, lots of players around the league who were signed to non-guaranteed “training camp contracts” will be let go. Regular season rosters can only be 15 players or fewer.

Jazz rookie Trey Burke injury update: He will have surgery on broken finger

The following is a medical update on Utah Jazz point guard Trey Burke, who fractured his right index finger during the first half of Saturday’s preseason game vs. the Los Angeles Clippers:

Following several medical consultations, it was determined that Burke will undergo surgery to repair the bone fracture in his right index finger. The procedure will be performed on Tuesday in Salt Lake City by Dr. Douglas Hutchinson. An estimated time for recovery will be provided following the completion of the procedure.

Jazz rookie Trey Burke suffers broken finger

The following is a medical update on Utah Jazz rookie point guard Trey Burke:

X-rays revealed that Burke suffered a fractured right index finger during the first half of Saturday’s game vs. the Los Angeles Clippers.

He will be re-evaluated on Monday at which point an update on his status will be provided.

Lester Hudson joins Utah Jazz training camp

The Utah Jazz announced today that the team has signed free-agent guard Lester Hudson, finalizing Utah’s 2013 training camp roster at 20 players.

Hudson (6-3, 190, Tennessee-Martin) has appeared in 52 career NBA games with four teams, over three seasons (Boston Celtics, Memphis Grizzlies, Washington Wizards and Cleveland Cavaliers). The 29-year-old, who last played in the NBA during the 2011-12 season with Memphis, holds career averages of 4.8 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 10.3 minutes per game.

In 2012-13, Hudson was a member of the Dongguan Leopards of the Chinese Basketball Association and the Austin Toros of the NBA D-League. He appeared in 11 games (10 starts) with the Toros, averaging 18.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 36.6 minutes and also saw action in four of the Toros playoff contests where his averages increased to 23.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 6.0 assists. In 15 games with the Leopards, he posted averages of 27.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 37.0 minutes.

The Memphis, Tenn., native was originally selected by the Boston Celtics in the second round (58th overall) of the 2009 NBA Draft after a stellar final two seasons at Tennessee-Martin. The highlight of his collegiate career occurred during his junior season when he became the first NCAA Division I men’s basketball player to record a quadruple-double, putting up a line of 25 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 steals vs. Central Baptist on 11/13/07.

Utah Jazz add Brian Cook, Justin Holiday, Dwayne Jones to training camp

The Utah Jazz announced today that the team has signed free-agent forward Brian Cook, guard/forward Justin Holiday and center Dwayne Jones II. All three players will join the Jazz prior to this week’s training camp at Zions Bank Basketball Center. Following the three additions, Utah’s roster now stands at 19 players.

Cook (6-9, 234, Illinois) has appeared in 421 career NBA games (74 starts) over nine seasons from 2003-12. He spent his first four seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers before stints with the Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, and Washington Wizards and holds career averages of 5.5 points and 2.6 rebounds. The 32-year-old has also seen action in 31 career playoff games over four appearances with the Lakers and Rockets. In 2012-13, he appeared in two games for the Piratas de Quebradillas of Puerto Rico, averaging 9.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in 19.1 minutes. Cook was originally selected by the Lakers in the first round (24th overall) of the 2003 NBA Draft.

Holiday (6-6, 185, Washington) split time between the NBA and NBA Development League as a rookie in 2012-13, playing 47 games for the Idaho Stampede after attending training camp with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He finished the season with the Philadelphia 76ers, appearing in nine games for the Sixers, averaging 4.7 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 15.8 minutes of play. He averaged 17.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 34.7 minutes during his time with the Stampede and was selected to the 2013 NBA Development League All-Defensive Second Team. This summer, the 24-year-old native Californian participated for Philadelphia in the Orlando Pro Summer League, appearing in four games and averaging 9.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists.

Jones II (6-11, 250, Saint Joseph’s) has played in a total of 82 career games in the NBA, split between Boston, Cleveland, Charlotte, and Phoenix, owning career averages of 1.3 points and 2.3 rebounds in 7.8 minutes of action. The 30-year-old appeared in 21 games (17 starts) for the Texas Legends of the D-League during the 2012-13 season, averaging 8.8 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 30.5 minutes. Jones II most recently participated in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas with the Golden State Warriors. A native of Morgantown, W. Va., Jones was previously selected to the 2010 All D-League First Team, and was the Atlantic-10 Defensive Player of the Year his final year at Saint Joseph’s.
