Stockton and Sloan eligible for Hall

The Salt Lake Tribune (Ross Siler) reports: The next election of concern for the Utah Jazz comes this winter, when the committees which screen nominees for possible induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame go to work. The Jazz could be well-represented when finalists are selected during All-Star Weekend in February and when the Class of 2009 is announced during the Final Four in April.    John Stockton – the NBA’s all-time assists and steals leader, who retired in 2003 – is eligible for the Hall of Fame for the first time.    Jerry Sloan, on the threshold of becoming the first NBA coach to win 1,000 games with the same franchise, is also Hall-of-Fame eligible. The Jazz have submitted the paperwork necessary to start the nomination process for Stockton and Sloan, and they will certainly do the same next year, when Karl Malone becomes eligible for the first time.

Nov 3: Jazz 89, Clippers 73

The AP reports: Paul Millsap scored 15 of his 24 points during a decisive 17-3 run in the fourth quarter, and the unbeaten Utah Jazz beat the winless Los Angeles Clippers 89-73 Monday night. A 3-pointer by Cuttino Mobley trimmed Utah’s lead to 67-64 before Millsap began his tear by making a pair of foul shots with 8:47 remaining. He finished it with a dunk with 4:37 left, giving the Jazz an 84-67 advantage. Mehmet Okur scored 16 points, Andrei Kirilenko had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Carlos Boozer added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Jazz (3-0). Millsap also had nine rebounds, leading the Jazz to a 44-38 advantage in that department… Chris Kaman led the Clippers (0-4) with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Baron Davis, returning to action after missing two games because of a sore left hip, had 14 points and nine assists. He shot just 5-of-15, including 1-of-8 in the first half. Marcus Camby had five points and nine rebounds in his debut with the Clippers.

Nov 1: Jazz 101, Clippers 79

The AP reports: With Deron Williams on the bench in street clothes recovering from a sprained left ankle he injured in the preseason, newcomer Brevin Knight had six assists and Ronnie Price had seven assists as the Jazz beat the winless Clippers with a commanding second half. “Those guys are playing great. We’re holding it down without D-Will,” said Carlos Boozer, who had his second double-double of the season with 25 points and 10 rebounds… Cuttino Mobley scored 20 points and Chris Kaman had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the winless Clippers, who host the Jazz in a rematch Monday night… Andrei Kirilenko added 11 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and four assists. Mehmet Okur had 10 rebounds and nine points and Ronnie Brewer scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half for Utah.

Jerry Sloan out tonight

Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan is not with the team for tonight’s home game vs. the Los Angeles Clippers due to flu-like symptoms.  Assistant coach Phil Johnson will coach the team tonight in Sloan’s absence.

Sloan is expected to accompany the team to Los Angeles on Sunday as the Jazz prepares to play the Clippers again Monday night in L.A.

Jazz decline Morris Almond option

The Deseret News (Tim Buckley) reports: Shooting guard Morris Almond said this morning that the Jazz will not pick up the contract option on him next season. The Jazz had until today to decide whether or not to exercise their third-year, 2009-10 season option on Almond’s rookie contract, which would have paid him $1.16 million.

Jerry Sloan OK with wild player intros

The Salt Lake Tribune (Ross Siler) reports: As old school as he can be, Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said he had no issue with the team¹s new player introductions, complete with glowsticks, fireworks and streamers: “Whatever entertains the fans, I don¹t have any problem with that.”    Sloan was asked about some of the outlandish introductions he¹s seen around the league with flames and smoke. “I think that¹s happened here a time or two,” Sloan said. “They had a fire here one time they had to try to put out, so that¹s what worries me.”

Oct 29: Jazz 98, Nuggets 94

The AP reports: Carlos Boozer had 25 points and 14 rebounds and Andrei Kirilenko added 16 points in his new reserve role and the Utah Jazz opened the season with a 98-94 win over the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night. Mehmet Okur had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Ronnie Price finished with five assists starting in place of Deron Williams, who is out with a sprained ankle… Allen Iverson had 18 points and eight assists to lead the Nuggets, who were missing star Carmelo Anthony while he served the first of a two-game suspension from a DUI arrest over the summer. Kenyon Martin added 18 points for Denver, which had a chance to tie it but missed a 3-pointer and Utah’s Ronnie Brewer got the rebound and made a free throw with four-tenths of a second left. Brewer finished with 15 points and Kyle Korver added 11 for Utah.

Oct 23: Jazz 100, Blazers 89

The AP reports: Kyle Korver hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with 15 points to help the Utah Jazz beat the Portland Trail Blazers 100-89 on Thursday night in the exhibition finale for both teams. Ronnie Brewer led Utah (4-3) with 22 points, and Carlos Boozer added 16. Channing Frye led Portland (4-3) with 17 points, and Rudy Fernandez had 16… Steve Blake added 14 points for Portland, rookie Jerryd Bayless and Travis Outlaw each scored 13 points and Shavlik Randolph had 10.

Jazz waive Lyde and Muoneke

Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor announced today that the team has requested waivers on forwards Kevin Lyde and Gabe Muoneke.

Lyde appeared in three preseason contests with the Jazz, averaging 5.3 points and 1.7 rebounds in 10.3 minutes. Muoneke recorded four preseason games as a Jazzman, registering 1.3 points and 0.8 rebounds in 7.5 minutes a game.

The Jazz roster now stands at 16.
