76ers trade Caleb Martin to Mavericks

Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey announced today that the team has acquired Quentin Grimes and a 2025 second-round pick (more favorable of Denver and Philadelphia) in a trade. In exchange, the 76ers traded Caleb Martin to Dallas.

Martin (6-5, 205) holds career averages of 8.5 points (.449 FG%, .359 3FG%, .739 FT%), 3.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 24.5 minutes per game in 297 games (112 starts) with the Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat and 76ers. In 31 games (24 starts) for Philadelphia this season, Martin has averaged 9.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists and a career-high 30.4 minutes while shooting 37.9% (33-87 3FG) from beyond the arc.

The sixth-year veteran went undrafted in 2019 after finishing his collegiate career at Nevada, where he was a two-time First Team All-Mountain West honoree (2018, 2019) and named the Mountain West Player of the Year in 2018. Martin helped Miami win the Eastern Conference title in 2023, before signing with Philadelphia as a free agent on July 6, 2024.

Grimes has appeared in 47 games (12 starts) for Dallas this season, averaging 10.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 22.8 minutes per game. His career-best 39.8-percent mark from three-point range on 4.3 attempts per contest ranked second on the Mavericks in 2024-25. On Dec. 1 at Portland, Grimes scored a season-high 28 points (9-13 FG, 5-7 3FG), which marked one of his seven 20-plus points performances this season. He’s scored in double figures in 23 of his 47 appearances overall.

Originally selected by the LA Clippers with the No. 25 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Grimes has played in 215 career games (102 starts) over three-plus seasons for Dallas, Detroit, and New York. He holds lifetime averages of 8.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 23.3 minutes per game. Prior to the NBA, Grimes starred collegiately at Houston from 2019-21 after playing his freshman season at Kansas. As a junior, he earned AAC Co-Player of the Year honors as he helped lead the Cougars to a 28-4 record and an appearance in the 2021 Final Four, while averaging a team-best 17.8 points per contest.

Grimes will wear No. 25 for the 76ers.

Miami Heat reach 2023 NBA Finals

On Monday night at TD Garden, the Eastern Conference championship trophy for the NBA had made its way to the other team’s locker room. The trophy, a sterling silver replica of a basketball, was displayed atop a few packing trunks with metallic trim. The Miami Heat had earned it through a humbling 103-84 victory against the Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the conference finals.

Before a late-night flight to Denver, where they will play the Nuggets for the NBA title beginning Thursday, players and staff members stood in front of the trophy while wearing N.B.A. finals hats and T-shirts to commemorate the team’s heroic struggle.

Everyone except the Heat was stunned by their resurgence as the East’s No. 8 seed. Coach Erik Spoelstra stayed with his plan even though the team was struggling throughout the regular season and losing almost as frequently as they were winning. They could get better, according to Spoelstra, if they kept their attention on the tasks at hand. It consisted of getting together after discouraging defeats, watching movies, and working hard in the gym.

“I think probably people can relate to this team,” Spoelstra said. “Professional sports is just kind of a reflection sometimes of life, that things don’t always go your way. The inevitable setbacks happen, and it’s how you deal with that collectively. There’s a lot of different ways that it can go: It can sap your spirit. It can take a team down, for whatever reason.

“With this group, it’s steeled us and made us closer and made us tougher.”

Miami Heat re-sign Caleb Martin

The Miami HEAT have re-signed forward Caleb Martin.

“Caleb is a multi-position player with tremendous energy that had a career year with us,” said HEAT President Pat Riley. “He works hard and deserves this as much as any young player in the league. We are extremely happy he has decided to come back.”

Martin, who was originally signed by the HEAT to a two-way contract on September 14 and later converted to a standard contract on February 15, appeared in 60 games (12 starts) with Miami last season and averaged 9.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 22.9 minutes while shooting 50.7 percent from the field, 41.3 percent from three-point range and 76.3 percent from the foul line. In his 12 starts, Martin averaged 13.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 52.8 percent from the field and a perfect 12-of-12 from the line. He set single season career highs in points, rebounds, steals, blocks, field goals made, three-point field goals made, free throws made and field goal percentage. He finished third on the team in blocks, fourth in dunks and tied for fourth in three-point plays. He led the team in steals and blocks 16 times each, in plus/minus on seven occasions, in scoring three times and in minutes and rebounds twice each while also topping the reserves in steals a team-high 23 times. Additionally, Martin appeared in 17 postseason games on Miami’s run to the Eastern Conference Finals and averaged 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds in 12.3 minutes of action.

Martin has now appeared in 131 regular season games (16 starts) during his three-year NBA career and has averaged 7.1 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 19.1 minutes while shooting 45.5 percent from the field, 36.3 percent from three-point range and 72.5 percent from the foul line. He has also appeared in 28 career G League games (all starts) and averaged 21.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.61 steals and 36.9 minutes while shooting 47 percent from the field and 37.1 percent from three-point range.

Miami Heat reportedly extend qualifying offer to Caleb Martin

Via the Miami Herald:

The Heat extended a $2.1 million qualifying offer to forward Caleb Martin on Tuesday, as expected, to retain the right to match outside offers up to the $10.3 million midlevel exception to re-sign him this offseason. In other words, the qualifying offer means that Martin will be a restricted free agent this summer…

But the Heat’s resources to re-sign Martin are limited, as it does not hold his Bird rights and isn’t on track to have cap space. Miami does not have the ability to match an outside offer to Martin above the $10.3 million mid-level exception for next season.

Charlotte Hornets waive Caleb Martin

The Charlotte Hornets have waived forward Caleb Martin.

In his second season with the Hornets, Martin averaged 5.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 15.4 minutes per game, appearing in 53 games. Over his two seasons with Charlotte from 2019-21, Martin posted averages of 5.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 16.0 minutes per game in 71 career games.

Undrafted out of Nevada in the 2019 NBA Draft, Martin originally signed with the Hornets on July 31, 2019.
