Timberwolves re-sign Derrick Rose

The Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday re-signed guard Derrick Rose.

The 6-foot-3 former league MVP, now far removed from those days, originally signed with the Wolves last season on March 8. He played a total of 25 regular season games on two different teams (Minnesota and Cleveland) last season, and averaged 8.4 points on 43.5% shooting.

During the 2018 playoffs, Rose played in all five games of the Timberwolves’ first round series against the Rockets, and performed quite well as a bench contributor, putting up 14.2 points per game on 50.9% shooting.

Rose has made the NBA All-Star team three times. And he won NBA MVP in 2010-11 as a member of the Bulls.

Timberwolves sign Derrick Rose

Derrick Rose isn’t done with basketball just yet.

The Minnesota Timberwolves signed Rose, a former league MVP, on Thursday.

Rose, a 6-3 guard, appeared in 16 games (seven starts) with Cleveland this season, averaging 9.8 points, 1.8 rebounds in 19.3 minutes per game. He was traded to Utah in a three-team deal on Feb. 8 before being waived by the Jazz on Feb. 10. A three-time All-Star, Rose has averaged 19.2 points on 45.1% shooting and 5.8 assists in 486 games over nine seasons. His best season came in 2010-11, when under Tom Thibodeau he became the youngest player to win the NBA’s Most Valuable Player Award after averaging 25.0 points and 7.7 assists, while leading the Chicago Bulls to the best record in the NBA and the Eastern Conference Finals.

Jazz waive Derrick Rose

The Utah Jazz on Saturday waived guard Derrick Rose.

Rose (6-3, 190, Memphis), a former NBA MVP, isn’t the player he used to be. He played in 16 games (seven starts) this season for the Cavaliers, averaging 9.8 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 19.3 minutes per outing.

Over his nine-year NBA career, the 29-year-old Chicago native has averaged 19.2 points, 5.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 34.2 minutes through 486 games (476 starts) with the Bulls, Knicks and Cavaliers.

According to the Deseret News, “former Jazzman Joe Johnson was also part of the three-team deal with Rose and was originally sent to Sacramento. However, the veteran scorer will agree to a contract buyout to sign with the Houston Rockets, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.”

Derrick Rose trying to develop a 3-point shot by playoff-time

Yeah, there are a lot of leaps here, but let’s just go with it for now. Here’s NY Newsday reporting:

Derrick Rose trying to develop a 3-point shot by playoff-time

Derrick Rose has a personal game plan for the playoffs.

It’s OK if you have to read that again, parse all its implications. It was only a week ago that everyone expected him to be traded. And the postseason? Well, that was just crazy talk.

But after a big, necessary win over the Magic on Wednesday night — spurred in part by Rose’s 19 points — the Knicks find themselves in the unexpected position of still sort of having a shot at the playoffs. And that means Rose is in the even more unexpected position of trying to find a way for the Knicks to win if they get there.

Enter the three-point shot.

“I’m trying to put pieces of my game together,” Rose said Thursday after practice at Temple University. “You see I’m not shooting threes yet, but hopefully, [I’ll] start shooting them in the playoffs. It’s going to take a lot of sacrifice and dedication to get there, but I’m just adding pieces of my game throughout the season.”

Timberwolves may want Derrick Rose

Here’s the Minneapolis Star Tribune on the Timberwolves and Knicks PG Derrick Rose:

Timberwolves may want Derrick Rose

The Timberwolves are among several teams that have talked to New York about acquiring point guard Derrick Rose before Thursday’s trade deadline, ESPN.com reported Monday night.

Rose played for Wolves coach Tom Thibodeau in Chicago for five seasons, and his contract with this season’s $21.3 million salary expires this summer

Derrick Rose remains in Los Angeles as trial continues

Derrick Rose should be with the Knicks developing chemistry with Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis, Courtney Lee and company, but he’s busy in Los Angeles dealing with a serious trial. It’s totally understandable that Rose is staying out there to focus on it. Here’s the New York Daily News with the latest:

Derrick Rose staying in Los Angeles as trial continues

Derrick Rose decided against taking the 2,500-mile commute.

The Knicks point guard missed Saturday’s preseason game against the Nets on Saturday and, according to Jeff Hornacek, will also skip Monday’s contest because he’s in L.A. awaiting the resumption of his $21.5 million civil trial. It means the New York’s biggest summer acquisition won’t make his Garden debut until Oct. 15, at the earliest, when Joakim Noah is also projected to play for the first time.

If Rose’s contentious trial goes one day longer than expected, he won’t play at MSG as a Knick until Oct. 29 in the regular season against the Grizzlies. The Knicks and Rose had previously discussed a scenario where he’d would fly back-and-forth when possible, but that was before the 28-year-old arrived in L.A. and began his graphic testimony.

Derrick Rose may ditch mask soon

The Chicago Bulls are 12-8 and getting a modest 13.4 points and 5.7 assists per game from Derrick Rose this season. Here’s the Chicago Sun-Times with the latest D-Rose update:

Derrick Rose may ditch mask soon

Derrick Rose cut his hair. Has he cut his mask?

At the Bulls’ shootaround before Saturday night’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Rose was showing off a new do. Gone was the look he’s shown off all season, and in was a haircut similar to what he wore during his 2010-11 MVP campaign.

Perhaps of more importance could be the status of Rose’s mask that he’s worn to protect the left orbital bone he broke during training camp. He forgot to wear it during the second half of Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers but has the option of ditching it for good, and left open the possibility following the win.

But if he has made a call, the Bulls don’t know.

Derrick Rose hopes to return Tuesday

Chicago Bulls (8-4) point guard Derrick Rose is averaging 13.6 points, and 6.0 assists per game this season, on pretty awful shooting: 37.7% FG and 15.0% 3FG. Here’s ESPN.com with the latest:

Derrick Rose hopes to return Tuesday

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose is hopeful that he will be able to play Tuesday against the Portland Trail Blazers after missing the last two games because of a sprained left ankle.

“I feel good,” Rose said after Sunday’s practice. “My body was a little fatigued from just running around or just sitting down for a little time. Being able to run around today, and I had a great workout [Saturday] and I had another workout today after we got done practicing so I’m heading in the right direction … that’s what I’m aiming for, Tuesday, for sure.

Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg seemed encouraged by what Rose was able to do during Sunday’s practice.

Derrick Rose sits out USA vs Dominican Republic exhibition game

Here’s ESPN.com reporting on Team USA:

derrick rose

Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose was a last-minute scratch Wednesday night from Team USA’s exhibition game against the Dominican Republic at Madison Square Garden.

Rose was scheduled to play Wednesday despite sitting out practices Monday and Tuesday to rest his sore knees after making his return to a game for the first time in eight months Saturday night in an exhibition victory over Brazil in Chicago.

One source familiar with Team USA’s plans told ESPN.com that Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski decided to hold Rose out of the Dominican Republic game to make more minutes available for players vying for one of the squad’s last few roster spots as final cuts approach.

Rose participated in shootaround Wednesday morning and, according to one source present, moved “well” throughout the session after sitting out the last two practices.

Derrick Rose ready for USA Basketball

Remember Bulls guard Derrick Rose? He was awesome for a while, and won league MVP at a young age. And then has mostly been injured. But is set to return, on the international stage this offseason. The Chicago Tribune reports:

Derrick Rose ready for USA Basketball

Everyone associated with Derrick Rose’s second straight serious knee rehabilitation has said the process has gone smoothly.

Now, it’s finally time to publicly see the results.

Rose on Monday will be one of 19 players at USA Basketball’s five-day minicamp in Las Vegas. The week begins the process that will include a three-day August stint in Chicago and culminate with a 12-man roster traveling to Spain for the FIBA Basketball World Cup from late August to mid-September.

Rose hasn’t answered questions about his basketball performance since scoring 19 points in 33 minutes during a Bulls’ loss at Denver last Nov. 21.
