Celtics sign Derrick White to contract extension

The Boston Celtics in the first week of July signed guard Derrick White to a contract extension.

“Derrick is a great player who has immersed himself in the Boston community since joining us in the Spring of 2021,” said Brad Stevens, President of Basketball Operations. “Derrick brings a joy and selflessness to our building every single day. He’s committed to improving and has shown that in each year of his career. More importantly, he cares most about the things that matter, including building great relationships and competing with integrity. We are very lucky that Derrick is a Celtic and are thrilled he’ll be here for years to come.”

White has appeared in 181 games (147 starts) with the Celtics since he was acquired in February 2022, and is averaging 13.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.0 blocks in 29.9 minutes per game. During the 2023-24 regular season, White appeared in 73 games (all starts) and became the second Celtic in franchise history to average at least 15.0 points, 5.0 assists, 1.0 blocks, and 1.0 steals in a single season, alongside Larry Bird (1984-85; 1990-91).

The two-time All-Defensive team selection averaged 16.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.2 blocks in 19 playoff games during the Celtics 2024 NBA Championship run. White is the only player in NBA history to register at least 300 points, 70 assists, and 16-or-fewer turnovers in a single playoff run. The 6-4 guard registered the fifth-most blocks in the 2024 postseason (23) and became the fourth NBA guard since 1971 to record at least 20 blocks in multiple playoffs, including Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, and Dennis Johnson.

White was selected with the 29th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft after graduating from the University of Colorado where he garnered 2017 All-Pac-12 Conference First Team and All-Defensive Team honors his senior year.

What a difference a year makes for Derrick White.

The Celtics guard was admittedly tentative when he arrived in Boston at last season’s trade deadline. He didn’t want to step on any toes. But he got over those initial jitters. He was confident and comfortable this season, and it showed in his performance as he became a full-time starter, one of the Celtics’ most important players and an All-Defensive team selection.

What better way to show that growth than on Saturday night, when his miracle tip-in at the buzzer saved the Celtics’ season in epic fashion?

“If you don’t know who D-White is, you know who he is now,” Marcus Smart said. “I mean, that dude has been phenomenal for us this whole, whole year. You know, just playing the way that we knew he could play when we picked him up.

“It’s been refreshing for us, and it’s been a joy to watch and a joy to be on the court with him.”

White’s humility has always stood out. The sixth-year guard has never been an attention-seeker. He doesn’t say much. He lets his play do the talking.

Spurs sign Derrick White to contract extension

The San Antonio Spurs yesterday signed guard Derrick White to a contract extension.

Per multiple reports, White’s extension is a four-year deal worth $73 million.

White posted averages of 11.3 points, 3.5 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 24.7 minutes last season while ranking second among all NBA guards in total blocks (59), as well as second in the league in charges drawn (30). In seven games during the NBA Restart in Orlando, White averaged 18.9 points, 5.0 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 29.8 minutes while shooting 39.3 percent from three-point range on 8.0 attempts per game. For his NBA career White has appeared in 152 NBA games, averaging 9.8 points, 3.4 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 23.3 minutes while shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from long range.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, “the move cements White — the 29th overall pick in the 2017 draft — as a key piece of the Spurs’ rebuilding effort moving forward. It marked the second consecutive offseason the Spurs inked a a player with three years of service to a long-term extension. In October 2019, Dejounte Murray signed a four-year, $64-million pact.”

Entering his fourth season with San Antonio, White was also a member of the USA Men’s National Team at the 2019 FIBA World Cup. White was originally selected by San Antonio in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft (29th overall) after playing one season at the University of Colorado after three years at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.
