Chris Paul, Jaylen Brown, Harrison Barnes, George Hill and Dwight Powell receive NBA Cares honor

Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes, Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown, Milwaukee Bucks guard George Hill, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Chris Paul and Dallas Mavericks forward-center Dwight Powell have received the 2019-20 End-of-Season NBA Cares Community Assist Award. This in recognition of their continued commitment to positively impacting their communities through sustained efforts over the course of the season, the NBA announced today.

This year’s end-of-season award recognizes five players whose exemplary work advanced social justice and provided COVID-19 relief and support, reflecting the longstanding passion of NBA players to give back to their communities and stand up for the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion.

The five recipients made concerted efforts throughout the 2019-20 season – which extended nearly a full calendar year including the league’s hiatus and restart – to leverage their platforms and voices to engage, empower and support different communities amidst the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic and social justice movement following continued incidents of racialized violence against Black men and women. Each winning player will receive $10,000 to their charity of choice, a donation from the NBA and Kaiser Permanente.

On Mavericks big-man Dwight Powell

Here’s the Dallas Morning News reporting on Mavs forward-center Dwight Powell, who plays solid basketball when given some minutes, but still faces an uphill battle to get increased playing time:

The big question regarding Powell is whether or not he can continue to prosper in a reserve role. It’s unlikely that he will become a regular starter in the coming season, given the Mavericks’ makeup. He’ll be playing behind DeAndre Jordan, Harrison Barnes and Dirk Nowitzki on the front line, which puts him in competition with Salah Mejri, Maxi Kleber and Dorian Finney-Smith for playing time. What the Mavericks need is for Powell to continue to be a rebounding beast per minute played, like he was at the end of last season. If he does that, his offense will continue to come and playing time will not be a problem.

Mavericks re-sign Dwight Powell

The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have re-signed forward-center Dwight Powell.

Powell’s deal is reportedly a $37 million dollar contract over four years.

Powell (6-11, 240) holds career averages of 5.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 12.5 minutes per game in 98 games (two starts) with Boston and Dallas. He averaged 5.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 14.4 minutes per game in 69 games (two starts) with the Mavericks last season.

Powell was acquired by Dallas along with Rajon Rondo on Dec. 18, 2014, in a deal that sent Jae Crowder, Brandan Wright, Jameer Nelson, a 2015 first-round pick and a 2016 second-round pick to Boston.

The 6-11 Canadian was selected to play for the World Team at the 2016 BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge at All-Star Weekend.

A former standout at Stanford, Powell was originally drafted by Charlotte with the 45th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, before having his draft rights traded along with Brendan Haywood to Cleveland in exchange for Scotty Hopson and cash considerations. On Sept. 25, 2014, Powell was dealt to Boston along with Malcolm Thomas, Erik Murphy, John Lucas III, two future second-round picks and a trade exception in exchange for Keith Bogans and two future second-round picks.

As a senior at Stanford, Powell was named All-Pac-12 First Team while averaging 14.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. He was also named Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year.
