Raptors sign center Greg Monroe

Raptors sign center Greg Monroe

The Toronto Raptors’ signing of center Greg Monroe became official today.

Per multiple reports, it’s just a one-year deal.

“Greg is a proven big man in this league,” said Raptors General Manager Bobby Webster. “We believe Greg’s experience will be a great addition to not only our frontcourt, but to our team culture as we continue to build towards our goal of an NBA championship.”

Monroe is capable of delivering some instant offense, but isn’t known for his defense. He will likely play backup to starting center Jonas Valanciunas, and perhaps play some limited minutes as a backup to power forward Serge Ibaka.

Standing 6-foot-11, 265 pounds, Monroe averaged 10.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 20.4 minutes in 51 games (14 starts) with Milwaukee, Phoenix and Boston last season. He shot .565 (218-386) from the field and recorded nine double-doubles. Monroe appeared in 11 postseason games with the Celtics, averaging 4.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 9.5 minutes.

A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Monroe owns career averages of 13.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 28.9 minutes in 589 NBA games (415 starts) with Detroit, Milwaukee, Phoenix and Boston. He has averaged at least 10.0 points in each of the last seven seasons.

Monroe was originally selected by the Pistons with the seventh overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. He played collegiately at Georgetown, posting averages of 14.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 32.6 minutes in 65 career games (2008-10). Monroe was named First Team All-Big East as a sophomore and selected Big East Rookie of the Year his freshman season.

The big Raptors story of the summer was their trade of DeMar DeRozan to the Spurs for Kawhi Leonard. And one of the biggest stories entering the season will be if Leonard is healthy and if he’s as effective as he was prior to injury.

The Boston Celtics’ signing of center Greg Monroe became official today.

Multiple reports say it’s a one-year contract worth $5 million.

Waived by the Suns on February 1 after being acquired by via a trade with the Bucks on Nov. 7, Monroe is averaging 10.4 points (60.1% FG), 7.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 21.8 minutes in 25 games (14 starts) this season. Monroe recorded a scoring average of at least 15.0 points in five consecutive seasons from 2011-12 to 2015-16, making him one of five NBA centers to accomplish that feat during the same timeframe (Aldridge, Bosh, Cousins, B. Lopez). He has finished each of his last six seasons with a scoring average in double figures.

A two-year collegiate standout at Georgetown University, Monroe hauled in a career-best 10.2 rebounds in 69 games for Detroit in 2014-15 in what stands as his only NBA season with a double-double average (15.9 ppg).

Greg Monroe hopes to return soon from knee injury

Here’s the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel with good news on the Bucks, whose center Greg Monroe doesn’t expect to miss much time:

Greg Monroe hopes to return soon from knee injury

Milwaukee Bucks center Greg Monroe said he was confident his knee injury would not keep him out too long, even before he underwent a magnetic resonance imaging exam Wednesday.

The exam revealed a left knee medial collateral ligament sprain, similar to an injury that sidelined him for 11 games last season when he was with the Detroit Pistons.

“I know how it felt last season and this is not nearly as much,” Monroe said in the Bucks locker room before they met the Los Angeles Clippers.

Monroe missed his second game on the road trip after injuring his knee during a drill at the Bucks’ shootaround Tuesday at Beverly Hills High School. The Bucks lost to the Los Angeles Lakers, 113-95, on Tuesday night after Monroe warmed up but could not go because of the injury.

The Milwaukee Bucks have signed free agent center/forward Greg Monroe, General Manager John Hammond announced today.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “deal will be worth an estimated $50 millon over three years, with the third year a player option.”

“The entire Bucks organization is thrilled to welcome Greg to Milwaukee,” Bucks General Manager John Hammond said. “Greg will be a fantastic complement to the talented young roster we’re assembling. The fact that he chose Milwaukee speaks volumes about the culture we’re developing and the bright future we envision for the Bucks.”

“Greg is a skilled low-post scorer and rebounder, and will add a whole new dimension to our young roster,” Bucks Head Coach Jason Kidd added. “He’s just 25 years old and still scratching the surface of his potential. I’m looking forward to helping him develop along with our other talented young players.”

Monroe, 25, was selected by the Pistons with the seventh-overall pick of the 2010 NBA Draft and has spent the last five seasons with Detroit. In 2014-15, he averaged a double-double for the first time in his career with 15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds, along with 2.1 assists. Monroe was one of only 12 players in the NBA last season to average a points/rebounds double-double, and his 10.2 rebounds per game tied for eighth in the league. On Feb. 6 vs. Denver, Monroe recorded his first career 20-point/20-rebound game with 21 points and a career-high 21 rebounds.

In each of the last four seasons Monroe has recorded at least 1,000 points and 600 rebounds, making him one of just two NBA players (DeMarcus Cousins) to accomplish that feat. In his career, Monroe has notched 158 double-doubles, which is 10th-most among all NBA players during that time span. The 6-foot-11-inch center/forward has career averages of 14.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists over 378 games (334 starts).

Monroe was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2011. He played at Georgetown for two years from 2008 through 2010 and earned NCAA AP All-America Third Team and First Team All-Big East honors after his sophomore season in 2010. As a high school senior at Helen Cox (Louisiana) in 2008, he was named a McDonald’s All American. Monroe will wear No. 15 for the Bucks.

Here’s the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporting on the Bucks, who are adding a whole bunch of offense to their frontcourt:

Bucks, Greg Monroe agree to deal

The Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to terms on a maximum contract with free-agent center Greg Monroe, a league source indicated Thursday.

The deal will be worth an estimated $50 millon over three years, with the third year a player option, the source said.

The Bucks beat out bids from the New York Knicks, Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Lakers to land Monroe, a 6-foot-11 center who averaged 15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds last season for Detroit.
