Mavericks re-sign guard Trey Burke

The Dallas Mavericks have re-signed guard Trey Burke.

Per multiple reports, Burke’s contract with the Mavs is a three-year, $10 million deal.

Burke (6-0, 185) returned for his second stint with the Mavs in 2019-20 after signing as a substitute player on July 1, 2020, prior to the league’s restart at the Disney bubble in Orlando. Burke stepped up in the bubble, playing in all eight (one start) of the team’s seeding games, averaging 12.0 points, 3.8 assists and 1.1 steals in 23.9 minutes per game.

Burke also appeared in all six (three starts) of Dallas’ first round playoff games against the L.A. Clippers, averaging 12.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals in 26.0 minutes.

Per the Dallas Morning News, “Burke was late to join the Mavericks in the bubble because he tested positive for COVID-19 just after signing his temporary contract this summer and had to quarantine for 25 days in a Dallas hotel.”

The seven-year veteran holds career averages of 10.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 23.0 minutes in 394 games (129 starts) with Utah, Washington, New York, Dallas and Philadelphia. He has compiled averages of 10.3 points, 2.9 assists and 19.0 minutes in 33 regular season games (two starts) with the Mavericks.

Burke was originally acquired by the Mavericks in the seven-player trade that brought Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Courtney Lee to Dallas on Jan. 31, 2019. After playing in 25 games for Dallas over the second half of the 2018-19 season, Burke signed with Philadelphia as a free agent on July 30, 2019. He appeared in 25 games for the Sixers in 2019-20, before being waived on Feb. 6 and subsequently signing with Dallas.

Burke was an early entry candidate for the 2013 NBA Draft after his sophomore season at Michigan. He was selected ninth overall by Minnesota before having his draft rights traded to Utah for the 14th and 21st picks.

The Columbus, Ohio, native was named the National College Player of the Year, a consensus First Team All-American and the Bob Cousy Award winner as a sophomore while helping the Wolverines reach the national championship game in 2013.

After wearing No. 23 with Dallas in 2018-19 and No. 32 for the Mavericks in the bubble, Burke will don No. 3 for the club in 2020-21.

The Dallas Mavericks have signed guard Trey Burke as a substitute player for the remainder of the 2019-20 season.

Burke (6-0, 185) returns for his second stint with Dallas after appearing in for 25 games (one start) for the club last season. After being acquired by the franchise in the seven-player trade that brought Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Courtney Lee to Dallas on Jan. 31, 2019, Burke averaged 9.7 points and 2.6 assists in 17.4 minutes for the Mavericks over the second half of the 2018-19 campaign.

Per the Dallas Morning News, “mandatory team workouts are scheduled to begin on July 1. The 22 teams are scheduled to arrive in the Orlando “bubble” at staggered times between July 7-9, then hold one-week training camps and prepare for the July 30 resumption of the season, with each team playing eight regular-season games.”

After signing with the 76ers last summer, Burke appeared in 25 games for Philadelphia this season and averaged 5.9 points, 2.1 assists and 13.2 minutes before being waived on Feb. 6.

Burke played both of his collegiate seasons alongside Hardaway Jr. at Michigan. Hardaway Jr. (24th overall pick) and Burke went on to become the first pair of Wolverines taken in the first round of a draft since Juwan Howard (fifth) and Jalen Rose (13th) in 1994.

The 27-year-old will wear No. 32.

Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has acquired guard Trey Burke from the Utah Jazz in exchange for a 2021 second-round pick.

“Trey is a former lottery pick that has had a very good start to his career as a point guard,” said Grunfeld. “We feel fortunate to have the opportunity to add him as our primary backup and feel he will flourish in that role as he continues to develop.”

Burke (6-1, 191) holds career averages of 12.1 points, 4.2 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 210 career games (111 starts) in three seasons with the Jazz. Last season, the former Michigan standout averaged 10.6 points, 2.3 assists and 1.8 rebounds while shooting a career-high .344 from three-point range in 64 games (no starts). He also added 40 double-digit scoring outputs off the bench for the Jazz, including five games of 20 points or more. During the 2014-15 season, Burke made the third-most threes in a single season (124) in Jazz history.

Burke was originally selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the ninth overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft out of the University of Michigan, where he was the consensus 2013 National College Player of the Year and led the Wolverines to the NCAA Championship Game. His draft rights were traded to the Jazz in exchange for the rights to Shabazz Muhammad (14th overall pick) and Gorgui Dieng (21st overall pick). He was named to the 2014 NBA All-Rookie First Team (and also earned Western Conference Rookie of the Month honors three times), after averaging career bests in points (12.8), assists (5.7), rebounds (3.0) and free-throw percentage (.903).

Jazz rookie Trey Burke injury update: He will have surgery on broken finger

The following is a medical update on Utah Jazz point guard Trey Burke, who fractured his right index finger during the first half of Saturday’s preseason game vs. the Los Angeles Clippers:

Following several medical consultations, it was determined that Burke will undergo surgery to repair the bone fracture in his right index finger. The procedure will be performed on Tuesday in Salt Lake City by Dr. Douglas Hutchinson. An estimated time for recovery will be provided following the completion of the procedure.

Selected in the first round (ninth overall pick) of the 2013 NBA Draft, Burke (6-1, 190, Michigan) was acquired by the Jazz in a draft-night trade with Minnesota. Burke spent two seasons at the University of Michigan, where as a sophomore, the point guard led Michigan to the 2013 NCAA Championship Game and was the consensus selection as 2013 National Player of the Year. Burke averaged 18.6 points, 6.7 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from three-point range in 38 games his sophomore season. His 255 assists set a new Michigan single-season assist record while his 3.02 assist-to-turnover ratio ranked fifth-best in the nation. He also hit the game-tying three pointer to force overtime in a win over Kansas to advance the Wolverines to the Elite Eight.
