Sixers sign Tyler Johnson to a 10-day contract

Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey announced today that the team has signed Tyler Johnson to a 10-day contract.

Johnson spent parts of the last two seasons with the Brooklyn Nets, appearing in 47 games. While with Brooklyn, he posted averages of 6.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 18.7 minutes per contest.

For his career, Johnson has appeared in 348 career games (78 starts) between Brooklyn, Phoenix and Miami. Coming into this season, he holds career averages of 9.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 24.8 minutes per contest, while shooting .427 percent from the field and .360 percent from three-point range.

For three consecutive seasons (2016-19), Johnson averaged double figures in points, with his highest averages in points (13.7), rebounds (4.0), assists (3.2) and steals (1.2) coming in 2016-17 with Miami.

A native of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Johnson went undrafted in the 2014 NBA Draft before beginning his professional career with the NBA G League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce. He appeared in 15 games (all starts) with the Skyforce before signing two 10-day contracts, followed by a multi-year deal with Miami in 2015.

Collegiately, Johnson spent four years (2010-14) at Fresno State, earning All-Mountain West Conference Second Team honors as a senior with averages of 15.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists.

Johnson will wear No. 8 with Philadelphia.

Nets re-sign guard Tyler Johnson

The Brooklyn Nets have re-signed free agent guard Tyler Johnson.

Johnson (6’4”, 190) most recently signed with Brooklyn on June 24, appearing in eight seeding games (four starts) for the Nets in the NBA’s restart in Orlando and recording averages of 12.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 24.2 minutes per contest. In the 2020 NBA Playoffs, the six-year NBA veteran appeared in four games (two starts) for Brooklyn, averaging 13.8 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 23.2 minutes per contest.

Prior to signing with the Nets last summer, Johnson appeared in 31 games (three starts) during the 2019-20 season with the Phoenix Suns, recording averages of 5.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 16.6 minutes per game.

The Grand Forks, N.D., native went undrafted in the 2014 NBA Draft, beginning his first professional season with the NBA G League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce. Johnson played in 15 games with the Skyforce before signing two 10-day contracts and a multi-year deal with Miami in early 2015.

The Brooklyn Nets, who yesterday waived guard/forward Theo Pinson, signed guard Tyler Johnson today.

Johnson (6’4, 190) is a six-year NBA veteran who appeared in 31 games (three starts) this season with the Phoenix Suns, recording averages of 5.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 16.6 minutes per game. In 301 career games (71 starts) split between Miami (2014-19) and Phoenix (2019-20), the 28-year-old has registered averages of 10.5 points on 43.0 percent shooting from the field and 35.8 percent shooting from 3-point range, 3.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 25.7 minutes per contest.

Per the New York Daily News, “he should give the Nets some additional depth at the point guard position as the Nets attempt to make a playoff run without Kyrie Irving. The Nets nearly signed Johnson to a four-year, $50 million contract when he was a restricted free agent in 2016, but the Heat ultimately matched the offer sheet.”

Johnson averaged double figures in points in three straight seasons (2016-19), with his most productive season coming in 2016-17 with Miami, when he saw action in a career-high 73 games and averaged career bests in points (13.7), rebounds (4.0), assists (3.2), steals (1.2) and minutes (29.8). Johnson also made two postseason appearances with Miami (2016 and 2018), appearing in 10 playoff contests.

With NBA transactions restarted, Nets waive Theo Pinson

With NBA transactions having restarted as the league prepares to hopefully reopen later this summer, the Brooklyn Nets waived guard/forward Theo Pinson today.

Pinson played in 51 games over two seasons with Brooklyn, posting averages of 3.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 11.3 minutes per game. He also saw action in 43 games with Brooklyn’s G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets, recording averages of 19.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 1.0 steals in 34.8 minutes per contest.

The Nets roster stands at 16 players. Per multiple reports, the team is expected to soon sign 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard Tyler Johnson, whose most recent team was the Phoenix Suns.

Heat consider Tyler Johnson a combo guard

Heat guard Tyler Johnson averaged 5.9 points on 41.9% shooting in 18.8 minutes per game as a rookie two years ago, 8.7 ppg on 48.6% shooting in 24.0 mpg last season, and should have a bigger role this year. Here’s the Palm Beach Post blog with some insight:

Heat consider Tyler Johnson a combo guard

“He’s a combo (guard). That’s why we like him,” coach Erik Spoelstra said. “You put him on the court and he knows how to have an impact. He’s comfortable now playing either position on the ball or off the ball. That kind of versatility is important.”

The Heat are hoping [Tyler] Johnson can give them minutes at point guard this season, a position that he’s played sporadically in the past. After Miami decided to keep Johnson and matched his four-year, $50 million offer sheet from the Nets in July, he spent most of the offseason working on his point guard skills with Heat coaches.

With a log jam at shooting guard – Dion Waiters, Josh Richardson, Wayne Ellington and Johnson – Johnson will get more playing time if he’s also able to serve as Goran Dragic’s backup at point guard. The 24-year-old Johnson believes he’s better prepared for that role this season.
