Heat still determining scope of Victor Oladipo’s injury

The Heat are still trying to determine how bad the injury is to their new shooting guard, Victor Oladipo. Via the Sun Sentinel:

Coach Erik Spoelstra offered a limited update upon the Miami Heat’s Saturday arrival in Portland, Ore., on where the team stands with sidelined guard Victor Oladipo.

Oladipo was the lone Heat player not to make the trip for four-game trip that opens Sunday night against the Trail Blazers, after injuring his right knee in Thursday night’s victory over the Los Angeles Lakers at AmericanAirlines Arena.

“We’re still in information-gathering stage right now, so I don’t have a new update for you,” Spoelstra said. “But he’s not with us on this trip, and he won’t be here [Sunday], and that is what we were focused on today, who’s available in the gym today.”

Rockets trade Victor Oladipo to Heat for Avery Bradley and Kelly Olynyk

The Houston Rockets today traded guard Victor Oladipo to the Miami Heat for guard Avery Bradley and forward Kelly Olynyk.

The Rockets also receive the right to swap first round picks with Miami in 2022, using their own pick or the one owed to Houston by Brooklyn.

Oladipo, a two-time NBA All-Star, has appeared in 29 games (all starts) this season between the Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers averaging 20.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.34 steals and 33.4 minutes while shooting 41.1 percent from the field, including 25.6 points on 43.3 percent from the field over his last eight games. He has recorded 18 20-point games this season, including six-straight from February 26 – March 16, tying the second-longest streak of his career, while adding three 30-point performances. He has connected on multiple three-point field goals 21 times this season and has currently hit at least one trey in 11-straight games. Additionally, Oladipo has been the only player in the NBA to average at least 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.90 steals over the last three combined seasons.

Olynyk (6-11, 240) was originally the 13th overall pick by Dallas in the 2013 NBA Draft before his rights were acquired by Boston. In 543 career games with 141 starts, Olynyk is averaging 9.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists.

Dating back to 2017-18, Olynyk is the only player in the league to have averaged at least 10.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.0 apg, and 1.5 3-pointers made in fewer than 28.0 mpg. He has the fourth-most 3-pointers made (645) of any player in NBA history listed 6’11” or taller.

Bradley (6-3, 190) was originally the 19th overall pick by Boston in the 2010 NBA Draft. In 581 career games with 494 starts, he is averaging 11.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.01 steals.

Last season, Bradley started 44 games for the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers prior to the NBA restart in Orlando. He earned NBA All-Defensive First Team honors in 2015-16 and was a Second Team selection in 2012-13.

Recent three-team James Harden trade amended into four-team trade to include Pacers

The Houston Rockets today announced that their three-team trade with Brooklyn and Cleveland has been amended into a four-team trade involving Indiana.

The Rockets traded guard James Harden to the Nets and a 2023 second round pick to the Pacers while acquiring guard Victor Oladipo (oh-lah-DEE-po) from Indiana, guard Danté Exum from the Cavaliers, and forward Rodions Kurucs (RO-dee-ahns KOO-rootz) from the Nets.

Houston also acquired the following draft assets:

– Three unprotected first round picks from Brooklyn in 2022, 2024, and 2026.

– The right to swap first round picks with Brooklyn in 2021, 2023, 2025, and 2027.

– Milwaukee’s first round pick in 2022 from Cleveland.

As part of the deal, the Pacers also received a future second round draft pick from Houston and a future second round draft pick from Cleveland.

“First and foremost, we want to thank Victor for what he gave to the Pacers through his play, his diligence in rehab coming back from a serious injury, and his community efforts,” said Pacers President of Basketball Operations Kevin Pritchard. “These decisions are obviously never easy and this one in particular was hard because of our relationship.

Continued Pritchard, “Caris is a high-quality person who will fit in with what we as an organization are doing, on and off the floor. He’s a versatile young talent who we think will be a great fit with the direction our team is taking. He can play multiple positions and affect the game at both ends of the floor.”

Originally drafted by the Pacers in the 2016 NBA Draft, LeVert was traded to the Brooklyn Nets on July 7, 2016. A 6-6, 205-pound guard, he spent part of five seasons with the Nets. He will wear jersey #22 with the Pacers.

Oladipo (6-4, 210) is in his eighth season and is a two-time All-Star. In 430 career games with 370 starts, he is averaging 17.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.7 steals. Over the past three seasons, he was the only player to have averaged at least 20.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 4.0 rpg, and 1.90 spg. In 2017-18, Oladipo was named Most Improved Player, All-NBA Third Team, and All-Defensive First Team.

Exum (6-5, 214) was the fifth overall pick by Utah in the 2014 NBA Draft. In 245 career games with 72 starts, the 25-year-old is averaging 5.7 points, 2.1 assists, and 1.8 rebounds in 18.6 minutes per game. Over the past three seasons, Exum averaged 14.6 ppg, 5.0 apg, and 4.2 rpg per 36 minutes played.

Kurucs (6-9, 230) was the 40th overall pick by Brooklyn in the 2018 NBA Draft. In 115 games with 55 starts, the 22-year-old is averaging 6.5 points, and 3.4 rebounds in 17.3 minutes per game. Over his first two seasons, Kurucs averaged 13.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg, and 1.9 apg per 36 minutes played.

Pacers hire Calbert Cheaney and Tyler Marsh as assistant coaches

The Indiana Pacers yesterday made six new additions to head coach Nate Bjorkgren’s coaching staff for the 2020-21 season.

Calbert Cheaney and Tyler Marsh were named Assistant Coaches/Player Development, Dylan DeBusk was named Video Coordinator, and Maurice Baker, Earl Barron and Moses Ehambe were hired as Video/Player Development Assistants.

The most interesting story on the Pacers roster these days revolves around shooting guard Victor Oladipo, and his future with the team. He’ll be paid a reported $21 million during the 2020-21 season, but then his contract is up. Indiana faces some tough decisions, and ones that will be tough to make perhaps until they and the rest of the league how well Oladipo plays at the start of this season now that he’ll presumably be at full health.

There was confusion around Oladipo’s decision to not play in the bubble before he changed his mind and suited up, fueling rumors of his unhappiness. Then he showed signs of displeasure with his role on the court, and refused to publicly express a desire to stay with the Pacers long term.

Pacers salary cap situation looks to be in good shape

When the NBA season paused, the Pacers were 39-26, which ties them with the Sixers for the 5th best record in the Eastern conference. Impressive, especially considering guard Victor Oladipo had just recently returned to action, and in 13 games played wasn’t up to his usual standards just yet.

Here’s the Indianapolis Star reporting on their salary cap situation:

No one knows where the NBA is heading because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but what’s clear is the projected $115 million salary cap could shift downward as teams are preparing for the worst-case scenarios. The Indiana Pacers, who have the 27th highest payroll of the league’s 30 teams, are expected to drop to the league’s lowest payroll.

That’s because the Pacers have received $10 million insurance on Victor Oladipo, a league source tells IndyStar. Oladipo tore his right quad knee tendon in January 2019 and missed most of the season. He returned this season past the midway point to appear in 13 games.

The Pacers’ cap number is $114.6 million for 2019-20 and they’re positioned to come in at $104.6 million due to Oladipo’s injury, well below the current 30th payroll of the Atlanta Hawks ($112.3 million).

There is no reason to expect the NBA to resume play anytime soon, as the world focuses on fighting coronavirus. Hopefully in the coming weeks, that view may begin to change.

Pacers guard Victor Oladipo plans to return on January 29

Indiana Pacers star shooting guard Victor Oladipo plans to return to action on Wednesday, January 29 for the team’s home game against the Chicago Bulls.

The news came in the form of a video from Oladipo himself that the team shared on social media.

Oladipo’s hasn’t played since January 23, 2019, in a Pacers win against the Raptors. He played 10 minutes, scoring four points, before leaving with injury. Just over a year later, he’ll be making his return from an injury that was reportedly a ruptured quadriceps tendon in his right knee.

The Pacers are already having a very good season. They have a 23-14 record, and have gotten terrific play from offseason addition Malcolm Brogdon. Power forward Domantas Sabonis has emerged as a serious force. And T.J. Warren is scoring in very efficient fashion. It’ll be worth seeing how the Pacers play through early to mid February as they adjust to having Oladipo back in the mix.

The Pacers these days always do better than many people predict. Right now they are 13-7, good for sixth best in the Eastern conference standings and are enjoying big-time seasons from Malcolm Brogdon, Domantas Sabonis and T.J. Warren, plus Jeremy Lamb – though injury put a stop to that.

All while waiting for the eventual return of star shooting guard Victor Oladipo.

Indiana Pacers guard Victor Oladipo doesn’t stand out in his gray Fort Wayne Mad Ants practice jersey.

It’s his third practice in five days with the Pacers’ G League affiliate, and the All-Star guard looks like just another guy. He’s not displaying his elite start-stop ability, lateral quickness and athleticism during Wednesday’s 5-on-5 portion of practice, but that’s by design.

The former Most Improved Player is working to regain his feel for the game. He’s been playing 5-on-5 since early November, and getting up and down the court in a scrimmage situation is an encouraging sign of progress more than 10 months removed from rupturing his right quad tendon.

Brogdon has been a fantastic addition to the team. He’s having an excellent season and we look forward to seeing him play alongside Oladipo. Hopefully that happens in the very near future.

Victor Oladipo set to return for Pacers

Good news for the Pacers, per the Indianapolis Star:

Indianapolis Pacers coach Nate McMillan said Victor Oladipo will start against the Milwaukee Bucks tonight at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Oladipo had missed the past 11 games, the Pacers going 7-4 in his absence. Oladipo will be on a minutes restriction but McMillan wouldn’t say what the number is. Oladipo will likely be substituted early so he’ll have minutes available for the second half.

Victor Oladipo added to 2016 USA Select Team

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Victor Oladipo was named to the 2016 USA Men’s Select Team.

Members of the USA Select Team will train daily with the USA National Team from July 18-21 at UNLV’s Mendenhall Center.

Oladipo was named to the 2015-16 USA Basketball National Team and participated in the 2015 USA Basketball Showcase where he recorded 25 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals in 23 minutes of action for the USA Blue Team. Named a member of the 2014 USA Select Team, Oladipo trained with and against the 2014 USA National Team that was preparing for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Originally the second overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, Oladipo averaged 16.0 points, a career-high 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, a team-high 1.61 steals and 33.0 minutes in 72 games (52 starts) with Orlando this past season. The third-year guard has appeared in 224 games (167 starts) with Orlando, averaging 15.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.63 steals in 33.2 minutes per game. The Indiana University product was named to the 2013-14 NBA All-Rookie First Team.

Oladipo was acquired by the Thunder on draft night last month from the Orlando Magic along with forward Ersan Ilyasova and the draft rights to forward Domantas Sabonis.
