Brandon Jennings suffers season-ending injury

The Detroit Pistons announced this afternoon that guard Brandon Jennings will miss the remainder of the season due to a ruptured left Achilles tendon.  The injury, which will require surgery, was confirmed following an MRI conducted on Sunday by team medical personnel.

Team medical personnel will work with Brandon and his representatives in determining the next course of action and treatment for the injury.  No timetable is being placed on Jennings’ return at this time.

The 6-foot-1 guard has appeared in 41 games this season averaging 15.4 points, 6.6 assists and 1.07 steals in 28.6 minutes per game.

Knicks still managing health of Melo

Here’s the New York Post reporting on the Knicks, who must continue to try to manage the knee health of star Carmelo Anthony:

Knicks still managing health of Melo

With the Knicks on the verge of a four-game winning streak and on the first anniversary of his 62-point scoring-record explosion against Charlotte at the Garden, Carmelo Anthony sat for a “recovery day’’ Saturday night as his teammates lost, 76-71, to the Hornets.

It was a preordained plan for Anthony to sit out the second night of a back-to-back, as the Knicks are in a busy stretch of their schedule. Anthony only has been back a week after going on a two-week sabbatical to rest his sore left knee. He played 42 minutes in Friday’s victory over the Magic, and coach Derek Fisher knew his All-Star would sit.

Anthony said earlier this week he wasn’t sure if he would play both ends of back-to-backs for now. Anthony has hinted he will play the All-Star Game at the Garden on Feb. 15, then re-evalaute things with the season all but lost. However, Anthony recently said he was in it for the long haul.

Brandon Jennings may be seriously injured

Brandon Jennings may be seriously injured

Here’s Michigan Live reporting on Detroit Pistons point guard Brandon Jennings, who on Saturday suffered what may be a serious injury:

Brandon Jennings may be seriously injured

Jennings did not accompany the Pistons to Toronto for tonight’s game, and most likely won’t be playing in any more games this season. Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy acknowledged it didn’t look good. He didn’t have to say much at all. If you saw Kalin Lucas’ change-of-direction injury that shredded his Achilles tendon while he played for Michigan State in the 2010 NCAA tournament, you essentially saw the same non-contact action on which Jennings was hurt against the Bucks.

The Pistons said only that Jennings would return to Detroit today for further examination. That unrushed approach would be consistent with an Achilles injury, which often requires that surgery be delayed several days until initial swelling subsides.

Whatever the injury, if Jennings is out for an extended period, as appears to be the case, it is a crushing blow.

LaMarcus Aldridge delays surgery, will try to play through thumb injury

LaMarcus Aldridge delays surgery, will try to play through thumb injury

Here’s the Oregonian reporting some good news — maybe — for the Trail Blazers. Why are we saying “maybe?” Because presumably, if Aldridge had surgery, came back in 6-8 weeks and was fine, maybe he’d be as good as ever as the playoffs approach. But since he’s returning now, he needs to figure out just how effective he can be while playing through the injury. If he’s still himself, fine. But if he’s semi-limited and can’t help the Blazers as needed, he may have to change courses yet again and opt for surgery sooner rather than later. As for the report:

LaMarcus Aldridge delays surgery, will try to play through thumb injury

Forward LaMarcus Aldridge has put surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb on hold indefinitely and will play through the injury the Trail Blazers confirmed to The Oregonian/OregonLive on Saturday.

Aldridge underwent two MRI tests and consulted with two doctors — one in Portland and one in Cleveland — before announcing on Thursday he would undergo surgery and miss six to eight weeks.

Aldridge said on Thursday that no surgery date had been set, but he would see a surgeon “within the week.” On Saturday, the Blazers announced Aldridge will hold off on surgery and try to play through the remainder of the season.

Video: Klay Thompson 37 points in one quarter

Here are video highlights of Warriors guard Klay Thompson going crazy and scoring 37 points in one quarter (the third quarter) Friday night at home in Golden State against the Sacramento Kings. He set an NBA record for the most points in a single quarter:

Thompson finished with 52 points for the game. The Warriors won big, 126-101.

According to the Associated Press, “Thompson surpassed the 33-point mark set by George Gervin in 1978 and matched by Carmelo Anthony in 2008 for the most points in a quarter. Michael Redd and Joe Johnson shared the previous mark for most 3s in a quarter with eight. Thompson, who signed a four-year, near-maximum contract extension worth about $70 million this summer, couldn’t remember ever dominating a game like that. ”Maybe elementary school,” he joked.
