John Wall off to great start in December

Here’s the Washington Post blog reporting on the Wizards (9-10, which is just the 11th best record in the East):

John Wall off to great start in December

In five December games, the 25-year-old Wall is averaging 28.0 points, 9.4 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per game. He’s shooting 56 percent from the floor, 47.4 percent from beyond the arc and 85.3 percent from the free-throw line while playing 38.6 minutes per contest.

The week-long dominance was bookended by two dynamite performances against first-place clubs on the road. First, he began the month by leading the Wizards over the then-first-place Cleveland Cavaliers with 35 points, 10 assists and five rebounds. Then on Monday, he posted 26 points and seven assists in Washington’s victory against the Miami Heat, who had taken over first in the East, 24 hours after he hobbled off the court with a knee injury in Sunday night’s loss to the Dallas Mavericks…

After making 31 percent of his wide-open shots — attempts are considered wide open when the closest defender is at least six feet away — from 10-plus feet away in November, Wall is shooting 46.2 percent in such instances in December.

Denver-area radio station news

Here’s the Denver Post blog with news on the Denver, Colorado airwaves:

ESPN will move its Denver radio affiliation to the Bonneville International-owned 1600 AM, the sister station of 104.3 The Fan, following Front Range Sports Network’s agreement to sell 105.5 FM to Greeley-based community radio station KUNC.

The sale of 105.5 FM, announced on Monday, will allow non-commercial KUNC to split music and news formats, offering expanded news and information broadcasts on its current dial position, 91.5 FM, and launching its non-commercial music format full-time on the new frequency. The move is similar to one undertaken by Colorado Public Radio, which split its programming between 90.1 FM for news and 102.3 FM for music in January.

Lakers bench some key young talent

Here’s the Los Angeles Daily News blog reporting on the Lakers starting lineup situation, which underwent some changes tonight:

Lakers bench some key young talent

The two players represent significant pieces toward the Lakers’ long-term future. But rookie point guard D’Angelo Russell and second-year power forward Julius Randle also represent the pawns in Lakers coach Byron Scott making his first starting lineup switch in hopes to turnaround their 3-17 record.

Both Russell and Randle will come off the bench when the Lakers visit the Toronto Raptors (12-9) on Monday at Air Canada Centre, while 10-year veteran guard Lou Williams and rookie forward Larry Nance Jr. will start in their place.

“Both of them are young, have a long way to go and have a lot of work to do. But this change wasn’t so much based on them not performing up to their capabilities,” Lakers coach Byron Scott said of Randle and Russell. “It’s based on where we are as a team.”

The Raptors play host to the Los Angeles Lakers tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Air Canada Centre (Sportsnet ONE/TSN 1050 Toronto).

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson suffers ankle fracture, needs surgery

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson suffers ankle fracture, needs surgery

Brooklyn Nets guard/forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson has been diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture of the posterior talus in his right ankle, according to General Manager Billy King. The injury occurred during practice on Saturday, December 5.

Hollis-Jefferson will undergo surgery this week, and a timetable for his return will be established following the procedure.

It’s been a very tough season for the 5-15 Nets, but a bright spot has been rookie Hollis-Jefferson’s solid play, especially on the defensive end. In 19 games (14 starts) this season, Hollis-Jefferson has averaged 5.2 points, 6.1 rebounds (fourth among qualifying rookies), 1.4 assists and 1.4 steals (first among qualifying rookies) in 22.1 minutes per game. He’s scored in double figures three times, recorded double digit rebounds five times and is the only rookie in the league to register a five-steal game (he’s posted two such games).

Jerry Colangelo named Special Advisor and Chairman of Basketball Operations for 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers are 1-20 this season and engaged in a multi-season rebuilding process that seems to have no end in sight. Today, they announced that some elite veteran leadership will provide some advice and assistance to the front office, which so far has acquired a few good young players and a ton of draft picks but nothing that suggests the team will be competitive anytime in the near future.

The team today named Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame member and Chairman of the Board of Directors for USA Basketball Jerry Colangelo as the Special Advisor to the Managing General Partner and Chairman of Basketball Operations.

“Jerry Colangelo is one of the most respected people in basketball and we are excited to add his five decades of knowledge, relationships and experience to help drive our organization forward,” said Sixers co-Managing Owner Josh Harris.

Colangelo currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for USA Basketball, having been involved in the organization since being announced as Managing Director of the then newly-created USA Basketball Men’s Senior National Team program, which he re-established as the best in the world. That team is 75-1 since his arrival, currently owns a 63-game winning streak dating back to 2006 and earned consecutive Olympic gold medals (2008 and 2012) and consecutive FIBA World Cup gold medals (2010 and 2014) for the first time in history.

“I am excited and energized about the opportunity to work with Josh Harris and this ownership group in their continued efforts to build something lasting and special here with the Sixers,” Colangelo said. “This is an organization with a storied history, strong and talented leadership and a number of promising pieces that have the potential for a very bright future.”

During Colangelo’s storied tenure with the Phoenix Suns, which spanned from 1968 through 2012, his roles included Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, Managing General Partner, President, Head Coach and General Manager. His impact on the NBA has been immeasurable, having served as the Chairman of the NBA’s Board of Governors from 2001 through 2005, a member of the league’s Finance Committee, Long Range Planning Committee, Expansion Committee, and Competition and Rules Committee.

“It’s not every day you have the opportunity to work alongside a Hall of Famer with Jerry’s unique set of experiences,” said President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Sam Hinkie. “I feel incredibly fortunate to have him as part of our organization.”

He led an ownership group which secured the Major League Baseball expansion Arizona Diamondbacks to Phoenix for its inaugural season in 1998. Serving as the Chairman and CEO, his experience, acumen and vision helped guide the franchise to a World Series championship in 2001 – the quickest an expansion team has ever won a title in baseball history. He also served on the MLB Legislative Committee, Equal Opportunity Committee and on the Board of Directors of the MLB Advanced Media, the league’s technology arm.

Colangelo was also integral in bringing professional women’s basketball to the United States, having served on the founding committee for the WNBA, with the Phoenix Mercury becoming one of the league’s inaugural teams in 1997 and advancing to the WNBA Finals a year later. He was instrumental in facilitating the move of the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets to Arizona in 1996, where they became the Phoenix Coyotes.

Currently a principal partner of JDM Partners LLC, a real estate development company, Colangelo also serves as Chairman of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and has authored two books: “Return of the Gold” and “How You Play the Game.”

Kendall Marshall 76ers debut coming soon

Here’s the Philadelphia Inquirer reporting on the 76ers (1-20), who should have a bit of backcourt help coming soon. Whether Kendall Marshall (5.3 ppg during his three NBA seasons prior to this one) can help much is up for debate, but there’s room for him (or just about anyone) to step up in the Sixers’ backcourt:

Kendall Marshall should make 76ers debut soon

Kendall Marshall is on pace to make his 76ers debut on Thursday against Brooklyn at the Barclays Center.

The point guard, who signed as a free agent with the Sixers on Sept. 8, averaged 4.2 points and 3.1 assists in 28 games last season for Milwaukee. He, however, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in January, and has been sidelined since.
