Andrew Bogut moves closer to signing in Australia

Adelaide Now reports:

andrew bogut

FIBA (Federation of International Basketball Associations) has made progress on insurance deals for NBA players looking to play overseas during the league lockout, making Bogut’s NBL debut imminent.

The 2011-12 iiNet NBL Championship tips off on Friday when the Kings face Melbourne – and its NBA guard Patty Mills – at The Cage.

Bogut, drafted at No. 1 by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2005 and on the threshold of All Star status, tweeted yesterday he had “110 per cent” not signed with any of his suitors – the Kings, Adelaide 36ers or Gold Coast.

Kobe Bryant MAY have verbal agreement to play in Italy during lockout

kobe bryant

Nothing is official, and verbal agreements to sign a contract pending the ability of the team owner to actually get the money to make it happen aren’t set in stone. But Kobe Bryant is now pretty close to actually signing in Italy. Wait and see if it materializes.

UPDATE: Already, this report is being shot down. It may not be true. Apparently the owners need a lot of magic to make this thing happen, and it probably won’t. But here’s the earlier report:

The AP reports:

Italian club Virtus Bologna has reached a verbal agreement with Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant to play in Italy during the NBA lockout.

The sides have settled on a $3 million contract for the opening 40 days of the Italian league season, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Friday.

Bryant, who spent much of his childhood in Italy, was in the country for sponsor appearances over the past two days but was flying back to the U.S. for labor talks with the NBA on Friday.

Bryant will get a work visa and return to Italy next week, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has still not been signed.

Virtus had been due to open the season Oct. 9 against Roma, but schedules now need to be reworked after Venezia was added to the league as a 17th team.

Deron Williams 15 points, 9 assists in win for team in Turkey

FIBA.com reports:

Deron Williams

Deron Williams captured a gold medal with Team USA at the Beijing Games and no doubt will want to be with the Americans when they try to defend their title next year in London.

A 27-year-old in the prime of his career, Williams is an NBA superstar and one of the best guards in the game.

Unlike his previous seasons as a professional, though, Williams is not in the United States getting ready for the new season.

Instead, he’s in Turkey.

Because of the NBA lockout and the uncertainty of the 2011-12 NBA season, Williams has signed for Besiktas and on Tuesday night, he helped the club move a step closer to playing in the Eurocup.

In the first leg of their Qualifying Round tie with Dexia Mons Hainaut in Istanbul, Williams made just three of his 15 shots from the floor but ended up with 15 points as Besiktas won 78-70.

He also handed out nine assists.

Earl Clark returns from China, will be an unrestricted NBA free agent

Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports:

earl clark

Former Orlando Magic forward Earl Clark will be released from his contract with a Chinese Basketball Association team and will be free to sign with an NBA team as an unrestricted free agent whenever the lockout ends, Clark’s agent said.

Happy Walters, who represents Clark, said the 6-foot-10 forward has returned to the United States because Clark’s girlfriend is seven weeks away from giving birth to a baby boy and is having some complications.

“He wanted to be there and was not comfortable being in China with problems happening,” Walters told the Orlando Sentinel via e-mail. “He is bummed, but family comes first.

“The team in China has been very supportive and understanding and they will release him from his contract,” Walters added.

Derrick Rose may play overseas if lockout lingers

K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune reports:

Derrick Rose

Fresh off a vacation to Bora Bora with his mother, Brenda, Derrick Rose said Tuesday that if the NBA lockout drags deep into the season, he will consider playing overseas.

“Yes, I am taking into consideration that I might move overseas,” Rose said. “I don’t know where. There are a lot of great places overseas. I haven’t really had time to get the details of every place.”

Rose said he has one concrete offer from an undisclosed foreign team and a source close to Rose said several others have inquired about his services. The source stressed those opportunities would be pursued only if regular-season games get canceled and labor talks break down for an extended period…

“It’s kind of weird knowing that I don’t have a job right now,” Rose said. “I haven’t felt this way from high school. It’s all positive, though. I’m hoping the season starts no matter when. Hopefully, I don’t have to go overseas.”

InsideHoops.com editor says: As the lockout continues, the vast majority of players in the NBA, if asked, will “consider playing overseas.” It doesn’t mean they’ll actually sign.

Manu Ginobili still is mulling a decision on whether to join his former Italian team Virtus Bologna during the lockout.. “I did not say no to the proposal. In Bologna, I had great time and my wife Marianela loves Italy,” Ginobili said. ”There is a possibility that I will join Virtus Bologna during the NBA lockout. I have to give an answer by the end of the month.”

Ginobili is very familiar with the area after playing for Kinder Bologna from 2000-02 before joining the Spurs. He helped his team claim the 2001 Italian Championship, the 2001 and 2002 Italian Cups, and the 2001 Euroleague, where he was named the league’s Final Four MVP.

Lakers guard Steve Blake not looking to play overseas

Dave McMenamin of ESPN LA reports:

Steve Blake

Lakers reserve guard Steve Blake won’t be adding any stamps to his passport anytime soon, however.

“If we’re not having a season then I’m going to take the time to enjoy my kids and be with my wife and spend more time in Portland at my regular home, and just use the opportunity to just continue to work out and improve myself,” Blake said in a recent phone interview. “I’ve prepared myself for this financially, so I don’t need to go overseas and do it for the money.”

Blake and his wife, Kristen, have three young boys — Nicholas, Jamison and Zachary — but if he were a less-attached man he could see himself traveling the globe to continue to play basketball.

“More power to those guys,” Blake said. “Let them go play basketball, the game they love, and make some money doing it. If they don’t want to let us play here, they’ll play somewhere else. If I didn’t have three kids and wife, I’d probably go play somewhere as well.”
