Orlando Magic fire coach Jacque Vaughn

The Orlando Magic have relieved Jacque Vaughn from his head coaching duties, General Manager Rob Hennigan announced today. In addition, James Borrego has been named interim head coach.

“Jacque (Vaughn) has been a trusted friend and colleague,” said Hennigan. “We thank him immensely for his contributions and sacrifices in bringing our team to this point, and we greatly appreciate his unwavering commitment to our organization. We have tremendous respect for Jacque and certainly wish him the best as he embarks on the next phase of his career.”

Vaughn was named head coach on July 27, 2012. He became the tenth head coach in franchise history and was the second youngest coach in the NBA at the time of his hiring. During his two-plus seasons in Orlando, Vaughn compiled a record of 58-158 (.269 win pct.), including 15-37 this season.

Prior to joining the Magic, Vaughn spent two seasons (2010-12) as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs. During his two seasons on San Antonio’s staff, the Spurs compiled a regular season record of 111-37. He was also a member of the 2006-07 Spurs’ NBA Championship team as a player.

Borrego is in his third season with the Magic. He spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach with New Orleans. Prior to joining New Orleans, Borrego spent seven seasons with the San Antonio Spurs from 2003-10. He started as an assistant video coordinator in the summer of 2003 and finished his tenure as an assistant coach. During those seasons, Borrego was a part of two NBA Championships teams in 2005 and 2007.

During the summer of 2013, Borrego served as head coach for the Magic’s summer league team. He also coached the New Orleans summer league team in 2012. Borrego has participated in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program in both Tokyo, Japan and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Borrego began his coaching career at the University of San Diego, where he was an assistant coach for two seasons from 2001-03. During the 2002-03 campaign, San Diego captured the West Coast Conference Championship and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Borrego played three seasons at the University of San Diego, and during his senior season (2000-01) he was named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic Team. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in leadership studies.

Born and raised in Albuquerque, N.M., Borrego led Albuquerque Academy to a pair of state championships. He and his wife, Megan, have a daughter and two sons.

Warriors sign James Michael McAdoo to second 10-day contract

The Golden State Warriors signed free agent forward James Michael McAdoo to a second 10-day contract as a Call-Up from the Warriors’ NBA Development League affiliate in Santa Cruz, the team announced Monday.

McAdoo, 22, appeared in three games with Golden State during his first 10-day contract from January 19 – January 27, averaging 4.7 points and 1.7 rebounds in 6.5 minutes. The 6-9 forward tallied 11 points, five rebounds and one block in 13 minutes in his NBA debut in Golden State’s 122-79 victory over the Denver Nuggets on January 19. The North Carolina product has appeared in 24 games (22 starts) with the Santa Cruz Warriors this season, averaging 19.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.04 steals (tied for sixth-best in the D-League) and 2.38 blocks (sixth-best) in 33.0 minutes while hitting 58.8 percent from the field.

McAdoo, who was not selected in the 2014 NBA Draft, originally signed with the Warriors on September 2, 2014. He appeared in five preseason games before being waived on October 24, 2014.

McAdoo will wear uniform #20.

Memphis Grizzlies sign JaMychal Green to 10-day contract

The Memphis Grizzlies signed free agent forward JaMychal Green to a 10-day contract as a Call-Up from the NBA Development League’s Austin Spurs, Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace announced today.

Green (6-9, 220) has averaged 23.0 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.55 blocks in 31.8 minutes in 20 games (all starts) with Austin this season, shooting .577 from the field, .364 from three-point range and .843 from the free throw line. The NBA D-League Player of the Month for games in December, Green ranks sixth in the D-League in scoring and rebounding per game among players with at least 10 games played and is tied for seventh in double-doubles (15).

Green owns career D-League averages of 15.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.07 blocks in 26.8 minutes in 60 games (45 starts) in two seasons (2012-13, 2014-15) with Austin, shooting .532 from the field and .812 from the free throw line.

A 24-year-old NBA rookie, Green was signed by the San Antonio Spurs to a 10-day contract as a Call-Up on Jan. 18 and totaled eight points, six rebounds and two blocks in 25 minutes over four appearances for the Spurs, making four of his seven shot attempts.

Undrafted in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Montgomery, Ala. native averaged 13.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.72 blocks in 123 games over four seasons at the University of Alabama. He played 25 games for Chorale Roanne of the LNB Pro A League in France during the 2013-14 season.

Pistons sign John Lucas III to 10-day contract

With point guard Brandon Jennings out for the season, the Detroit Pistons can use some help in the backcourt. Today, they decided on a player to audition, at least for 10 days, for the role.

Pistons General Manager Jeff Bower announced today that the club has signed guard John Lucas III to a 10-day contract.

The 5’11”, 166-pound guard joins the Pistons after spending the season in China with the Fujian Sturgeons of the Chinese Basketball Association where he averaged 26.6 points, 7.1 assists, 4.7 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 43.5 minutes in 26 games.

The Washington, DC native has spent parts of six seasons in the NBA with the Houston Rockets, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors and Utah Jazz. He holds career averages of 4.8 points, 1.4 assists, 1.0 rebounds and 12.2 minutes in 216 games (eight starts) and is a career 34.7-percent shooter from three-point range.

Lucas has also spent time in the NBA’s Developmental League and played internationally in Italy, Spain and China. He played collegiately at Oklahoma State University.

Rajon Rondo suffers injuries to face: orbital fracture and nasal fracture

Dallas Mavericks point guard Rajon Rondo should have gone to Disney World Saturday instead of playing against the Orlando Magic. It would have been a lot more fun.

Rondo suffered an orbital fracture to his left eye as well as a nasal fracture during the game at Orlando on Saturday, January 31. His status will be updated later this week as more information is available.

The Mavs did win their game in Orlando, 108-93. So it wasn’t all bad.

Rondo will not travel with the team this week to Golden State and Sacramento while undergoing additional testing and evaluation.

Knicks sign Lance Thomas for remainder of season

New York Knicks President Phil Jackson announced today that the team has signed forward Lance Thomas for the remainder of the season.

Thomas, 6-8, 225-pounds, is averaging 10.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists over 25.5 minutes in seven games (one start) with New York after signing the first of two 10-day contracts on Jan. 10.

New York Knicks President Phil Jackson announced today that the team has signed forward Lou Amundson for the remainder of the season.

Amundson, 6-9, 225-pounds, is averaging 6.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists over 22.9 minutes in seven games (six starts) with New York signing the first of two consecutive 10-day contracts on Jan. 10.

According to the New York Post, “After the Knicks waived him, the undrafted Amundson, 32, figured he’d be looking for his 11th NBA club. But team president Phil Jackson decided to re-sign him to a 10-day contract and then another. His performance has surprised everyone. “It’s great, especially the way my career has gone,’’ Amundson said. “I’m really thankful they gave me that opportunity to come here and show my worth. I’ve had a lot of hard work in my career over the years and not get that opportunity.’’

Sacramento Kings sign Quincy Miller to second 10-day contract

The Sacramento Kings announced today that the team has signed Quincy Miller to a second 10-day contract, according to Kings General Manager Pete D’Alessandro. Miller will be eligible to play in tonight’s contest against the Cavaliers.

Miller signed his first 10-day contract on January 17 after averaging a NBA D-League-leading 26.3 points (.522 FG%, .356 3pt%, .895 FT%), 7.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.5 steals and league-best 3.7 blocks in 14 games for the Reno Bighorns, Sacramento’s NBA D-League affiliate. Upon joining the Kings, Miller saw action in two contests, totaling 14 points (3-11 FG, 1-4 3pt, 7-9 FT), eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks in 40 minutes off the bench.

Originally selected by Denver with the 38th overall selection in the 2012 NBA Draft, the 6-10, 220-pound forward posted averages of 4.5 points (.366 FG%, .702 FT%), 2.5 rebounds and 0.54 blocks in 59 games (started 16) over two seasons for the Nuggets.

Miami Heat sign Tyler Johnson to second 10-day contract

The Miami HEAT announced today that they have signed guard Tyler Johnson to a second 10-day contract.

Johnson, who was originally signed to a 10-day contract by the HEAT on January 12, appeared in one game with Miami totaling two points on a perfect 2-of-2 from the foul line in 1:44 minutes of action. He has appeared in 15 games (all starts) with the HEAT’s NBA Development League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, this season averaging 18.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.00 steals and 34.5 minutes while shooting 48.8 percent from the field, 43.5 percent from three-point range and 80.8 percent from the foul line.

He appeared in two games with the Skyforce, after his first 10-day contract expired, posting an 18-point, 11-assist double-double on January 24 and then scoring 19 points, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out five assists on January 27, both resulting in victories.

Bucks sign Kenyon Martin for remainder of season

The Milwaukee Bucks have signed forward/center Kenyon Martin for the remainder of the 2014-15 season, General Manager John Hammond announced today. Martin has appeared in eight games for the Bucks this season and averaged 1.3 points and 1.1 rebounds in 5.9 minutes per game. Martin signed his initial 10-day contract with the Bucks on Jan. 9, and was signed to a second 10-day deal on Jan. 19.
