Hawks sign forward Paul Watson to 10-day contract

The Atlanta Hawks signed Paul Watson to a 10-day contract today.

The 6’6” forward has started all 13 games this season for the Raptors 905 of the NBA G League, averaging 18.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 34.3 minutes (.533 FG%, .467 3FG%, .706 FT%). He spent the previous two seasons in the G League with the Westchester Knicks, who selected him in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2017 G League Draft.

Watson played four years at Fresno State, where as a senior in 2016-17, he compiled 11.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 32.3 minutes (.414 FG%, .341 3FG%, .679 FT%).

The native of Phoenix, AZ led Paradise Valley High School to the state championship his senior year. He will wear jersey No. 2.

Hawks guard Trae Young exits game vs Bucks with ankle sprain

Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young sustained a right ankle sprain during Friday’s home game against the Milwaukee bucks.

He underwent an X-Ray at State Farm Arena, which was negative. Young will not travel with the team to Chicago and will remain in Atlanta to receive treatment.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, “Young was called for an offensive foul when he drove the lane with 1:32 remaining in the second quarter. He appeared to twist his ankle as he fell to the ground following a collision with the Bucks’ D.J. Wilson. Young needed to be helped off the court by John Collins and Kevin Huerter. He immediately went to the locker room.”

The Bucks, who are already without guard Eric Bledsoe and today were without superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, won the game, 112-86.

Young scored 12 points in 15 minutes before exiting the game with the injury. He’s having a fantastic season for the struggling Hawks, who have a league-worst 6-26 record.

Atlanta Hawks waive guard Tyrone Wallace

The Atlanta Hawks today waived guard Tyrone Wallace.

Claimed off waivers by the Hawks on October 23, Wallace appeared in 14 games, averaging 2.9 points and 1.6 rebounds in 11.5 minutes per outing.

The Hawks are just 6-20 this season. They’re getting big play from point guard Trae Young, and 16.4 points per game on good shooting from forward Jabari Parker, but big-man John Collins has only played five games due to a long suspension, small forward De’Andre Hunter is scoring 12.8 PPG but on just 40.6% shooting, and no one else on the team is scoring in double digits.

But as much as a problem offense is so far this season for the Hawks, their team defense is even worse, and through yesterday’s games is ranked 28th in the league.

The good news is, Collins will be back. And it’ll be worth seeing how they play a week or so later as they work him back into the mix.

Allen Crabbe undergoes non-surgical knee procedure

Atlanta Hawks guard/forward Allen Crabbe underwent a non-surgical right knee procedure today.

He won’t play in tomorrow’s game against the Nets. But could return fairly soon, since the procedure didn’t involve surgery.

But Crabbe hasn’t played much this season: ten games, one start, averaging a modest 5.3 points in 18.9 minutes per outing.

A second round pick in 2013, Crabbe began his NBA career with the Trail Blazers, and in his third season started averaging double-digit points. He did that in his 4th season as well, then put up 13.2 points per game for the Nets in 2017-18, but injuries took their tole and it’s unclear if he ever fully recovered.

The wait continues.

The Hawks, enjoying a fine season from second-year star guard Trae Young but they’ve been playing without talented big-man John Collins (25-game suspension) and are just 5-16 this season.

James Harden scores 60 points in 31 minutes vs Hawks

James Harden had himself a game on Saturday.

Well, three quarters of a game.

Playing 30 minutes and 41 seconds and then sitting out the fourth quarter, the superstar Rockets guard shot 16 of 24, including 8 of 14 from three-point range, and hit 20 of 23 free throws for 60 points, eight assists and three steals.

The Rockets beat the Hawks easily, 158-111.

In the loss, Hawks guard Trae Young put up 37 points and seven assists.

According to ESPN.com, “it was Harden’s fourth career 60-point game, tying him with Michael Jordan for third most in NBA history, trailing only Kobe Bryant (six) and Wilt Chamberlain (32). Harden is the only active player who has scored 60 points more than once.”

The Rockets are now 13-6 for the season.

Hawks forward Taurean Prince out with ankle injury

Atlanta Hawks forward Taurean Prince sustained a left ankle injury during the fourth quarter of last night’s contest vs. the Warriors. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed today at the Emory Sports Medicine Complex revealed a ligament sprain, bone bruise and associated soft tissue inflammation.

He’ll be re-evaluated in approximately three weeks.

The Hawks are 5-19 this season through Monday’s games, which ties them with the Bulls for the worst record in the Eastern conference. Prince, who has started 20 of the 21 games he’s played in this season, is third on the team in scoring at 15.0 ppg.

Hawks exercise options on John Collins, Taurean Prince and DeAndre` Bembry

The Atlanta Hawks yesterday (Monday) exercised the third-year (2019-20) option on the contact of John Collins, and the fourth-year (2019-20) options on the contracts of Taurean Prince and DeAndre’ Bembry.

Bembry, the 21st overall pick by the Hawks in the 2016 NBA Draft, has averaged 3.7 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 12.9 minutes, appearing in 64 games (four starts) in his first two seasons (.442 FG%). Last season, in 26 games (three starts), he put up 5.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 17.5 minutes (.414 FG%, .367 3FG%).

Prince, acquired by the Hawks from the Utah Jazz in a three-team trade on July 7, 2016, was originally the 12th overall pick by Utah in the 2016 NBA Draft. In his first two seasons, he’s appeared in 141 games (92 starts), averaging 10.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 24.4 minutes (.420 FG%, .374 3FG%, .825 FT%). In starting all 82 games last season, he compiled 14.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.0 steals in 30.0 minutes (.426 FG%, .385 3FG%, .844 FT% – 30th in the NBA). He was selected for the 2018 Mtn Dew Kickstart Rising Stars game during All-Star Weekend.

The 19th overall pick by the Hawks in the 2017 NBA Draft, Collins was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie Second Team last season as he averaged 10.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 blocks in 24.1 minutes (.576 FG%, .340 3FG%, .715 FT%) in 74 games (26 starts). He ranked seventh in the NBA in FG%, 10th in Eff. FG% (.591), t25th in bpg and 33rd in rpg, leading all rookies in offensive rebounds (176). He was also selected for the 2018 Mtn Dew Kickstart Rising Stars game during All-Star Weekend.

John Collins out with ankle injury

Atlanta Hawks forward-center John Collins underwent a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at the Emory Sports Medicine Complex on October 2, and it was revealed that the young big man has mild inflammation and soreness in his left ankle.

Collins underwent a non-surgical procedure on Monday, October 8. The team says he will be re-evaluated on October 22.

For now, Collins is listed as out.

The 6-foot-10, 235-pound Collins played 24.1 minutes per game as a rookie last season, and averaged 10.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per outing, shooting a very impressive 57.6% FG.

Hawks sign guard C.J. Anderson

The Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday signed guard C.J. Anderson. The deal will likely only last during preseason.

Earlier Tuesday, the team waived Isaac Humphries, who had signed with the Hawks on Oct. 8.

Last season, as a senior at University of Massachusetts, Anderson played in 32 games (28 starts), averaging 10.6 points, 5.2 assists and 5.0 rebounds in 35.2 minutes (.414 FG%, .400 3FG%, .813 FT%), ranking fourth in the Atlantic-10 Conference in assists.

He appeared in 126 games (47 starts) in his four years with the Minutemen. The native of Memphis, TN attended Arlington High School (Arlington, TN) for three years before finishing at Whitehaven High School in Memphis. He will wear No. 8.
