Timberwolves waive little-used guard Allen Crabbe

The Minnesota Timberwolves waived guard Allen Crabbe today.

Crabbe played in just nine games this season for the Timberwolves, for an average of 3.2 points and 1.3 rebounds in 14.6 minutes per game.

Per the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

According to ESPN’s front office insider Bobby Marks, Crabbe had roughly $4.6 million remaining on his $18.5 million contract, which is set to expire after this season. If Crabbe signs with another team, it would give the Wolves some relief as it relates to the luxury tax.

He was acquired by the Wolves on January 16 from Atlanta.

Crabbe showed scoring ability around 2015-18 or so, as he played for the Trail Blazers and then the Nets, but injury struck, and in recent NBA seasons he has not contributed much.

The Timberwolves are 17-41 this season, which is the second worst record in the Western conference. During trade deadline week, they agreed to a deal that sent Andrew Wiggins to the Warriors and brought D’Angelo Russell, who along with center Karl-Anthony Towns, forms the team’s core as they move ahead.

Atlanta Hawks guard/forward Allen Crabbe underwent a non-surgical right knee procedure today.

He won’t play in tomorrow’s game against the Nets. But could return fairly soon, since the procedure didn’t involve surgery.

But Crabbe hasn’t played much this season: ten games, one start, averaging a modest 5.3 points in 18.9 minutes per outing.

A second round pick in 2013, Crabbe began his NBA career with the Trail Blazers, and in his third season started averaging double-digit points. He did that in his 4th season as well, then put up 13.2 points per game for the Nets in 2017-18, but injuries took their tole and it’s unclear if he ever fully recovered.

The wait continues.

The Hawks, enjoying a fine season from second-year star guard Trae Young but they’ve been playing without talented big-man John Collins (25-game suspension) and are just 5-16 this season.

Allen Crabbe undergoes foot surgery

Portland Trail Blazers guard Allen Crabbe underwent successful surgery to repair a stress reaction of the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot, it was announced today by president of basketball operations Neil Olshey.

Crabbe is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in September.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

In 79 games (7 starts) this season, Crabbe averaged 10.7 points (48.8% FG, 44.4% 3-PT, 84.7% FT), 2.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists. The NBA’s second most accurate 3-point shooter at 44.4%, Crabbe posted the highest percentage from beyond the arc in franchise history by a player with 100-plus 3-pointers.

Allen Crabbe out with sprained ankle

Here’s the Oregonian reporting on a Trail Blazers summer league injury:

The Trail Blazers will be without shooting guard Allen Crabbe the rest of Las Vegas Summer League. But they will have him back well before the start of training camp.

A magnetic resonance imaging test performed on Crabbe’s left ankle revealed a ‘severe sprain’ but did not show any serious damage, the team announced on Thursday.

His recovery is expected to take four to six weeks, so he will not play again in Las Vegas but will be back with time to spare before the start of the 2015-16 season.
