Celtics forward Jeff Green will miss entire 2011-12 season

The Boston Celtics announced today that forward Jeff Green will undergo surgery on Monday January 9, 2012 at the Cleveland Clinic and will miss the 2011-12 season.

A team of leading cardiac specialists who consulted with Green and the Celtics indicated that surgery should completely repair Green’s condition and that he can expect to resume his NBA career next season.

During his team physical Friday, December 9th, an aortic aneurysm was detected. As a precautionary measure, Green underwent extensive additional testing, after which doctors recommended surgery.

“While we are saddened that Jeff will not be able to play this season, the most important thing is his health, and we were fortunate to have access to an amazing team of specialists to evaluate Jeff’s case,” said Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge. “The entire Celtics family supports Jeff during this difficult time in his career.”

At Jeff’s request, neither Jeff nor the Celtics will have any additional comment at this time.

Dallas Mavericks sign guard Delonte West

The Dallas Mavericks announced today they have signed free agent guard Delonte West. The deal is reportedly for one year and the league veteran’s minimum.

West (6-3, 180) is a seven-year veteran who owns career averages of 9.7 points, 3.6 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 388 games (225 starts) for Boston, Seattle and Cleveland. In 2008-09, West played alongside LeBron James in Cleveland and started each of his 64 games and averaged 11.7 points, 3.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 45.7 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from the foul line.

Originally the first round draft pick (24th overall) of the Boston Celtics in the 2004 NBA Draft, West played in just 39 games his rookie season before becoming the starting shooting guard in his second year. That season, West started each of his 71 contests for the Celtics and averaged 11.8 points, 4.6 assists and 4.1 rebounds in 34.1 minutes per game.

The Washington D.C., native attended St. Joseph’s University where, as a junior, he teamed with Jameer Nelson to lead his school to an undefeated 27-0 regular season and an Elite Eight appearance. He was named Honorable Mention All-America by Associated Press and All-Atlantic 10 First Team.

Nets sign forward Shelden Williams

The New Jersey Nets have signed free agent forward Shelden Williams, Nets General Manager Billy King announced today. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not released.

“We are pleased to add Shelden to our roster,” said King. “He is a proven veteran who will add depth to our frontcourt rotation.”

Williams (6’9”/250), a five-year NBA veteran who has played for six teams, holds career averages of 4.5 points and 4.6 rebounds in 303 games.

Selected out of Duke by Atlanta with the fifth overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, Williams played one and a half seasons with the Hawks before being traded to the Sacramento Kings during the to the 2007-08 season.

After splitting the 2008-09 season between Sacramento and Minnesota, Williams signed as a free agent with Boston for the 2009-10 season, where he appeared in 54 regular season games and eight postseason contests, helping the Celtics reach the NBA Finals.

Last season, Williams played in 42 games with the Denver Nuggets before a mid-season trade that sent him to New York, where he appeared in 17 games. Totaling 59 (38 starts) games in 2010-11, Williams had season averages of 4.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Boston Celtics bring back Sasha Pavlovic

The Boston Celtics announced today that they have signed guard/forward Sasha Pavlovic. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Pavlovic, a 6’7” guard/forward, appeared in 17 games for the Celtics last season and scored a season-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor against the New York Knicks on the final day of the season (April 13).

The native of Bar, Montenegro was a part of the 2006-07 Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers and was a starter in each game on their run to the Finals.

During that 2006-07 regular season he posted a career-high average of 9.0 points per game and shot 40.5% from three-point range in 67 games.

Pavlovic also shot a career-high 41.0% from three-point territory during the 2008-09 season. Pavlovic has posted career averages of 5.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in 483 career games with stops in Utah, Cleveland, Minnesota, New Orleans, Dallas and Boston.

Celtics trade Glen Davis, Von Wafer to Magic for Brandon Bass

The Orlando Magic have acquired forward Glen Davis and guard Von Wafer from the Boston Celtics in exchange for forward Brandon Bass, President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Otis Smith announced today.

Davis (6’9”, 289, 1/1/86) played in 78 games (13 starts) with Boston last season, averaging 11.7 ppg., 5.4 rpg. and 1.2 apg. in 29.5 minpg. He set career-highs in scoring, rebounding and minutes played.

Wafer (6’5”, 209, 7/21/85) appeared in 58 games (two starts) with the Celtics last year, averaging 3.2 ppg. in 9.5 minpg.

“Glen (Davis) is a versatile player that adds size to our frontcourt,” said Smith. “He has a solid mid-range jumper and is a strong team defensive player. Von (Wafer) brings athleticism and aggressiveness on the offensive end. We’re excited to add both to our team and we wish Brandon all the best.”

Originally selected in the second round (35th overall) of the 2007 NBA Draft by Seattle, Davis has played in 277 career regular season games (31 starts), all with the Celtics, averaging 7.6 ppg. and 4.1 rpg. in 21.0 minpg. He was acquired by Boston on June 28. 2007. Davis has also appeared in 64 career playoff outings (15 starts), averaging 7.5 ppg. and 3.8 rpg. in 20.6 minpg. He helped the Celtics capture the 2008 NBA World Championship.

Originally selected in the second round (39th overall) of the 2005 NBA Draft by the L.A. Lakers, Wafer has played in 167 career regular season games with the Lakers, L.A. Clippers, Denver, Portland, Houston and Boston, averaging 5.1 ppg. and 1.1 rpg. in 12.0 minpg. Wafer has also appeared in 16 career playoff outings, averaging 6.6 ppg. in 11.6 minpg.

Bass, a 6’8 forward, averaged a career-high 11.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game last season for the Magic. Bass also shot a career-high 51.5% from the field last season, which ranked 19th overall in the NBA. The former Louisiana State Tiger scored in double figures in 45 games and recorded 20 or more points in three games. He posted a career-high 27 points against Detroit on December 3 when he was 11-for-12 from the field.

Kevin Garnett to play more center for Celtics

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers isn’t worried about his team’s lack of depth at the center position. He plans on using Kevin Garnett a lot more in that role this season.

Entering his 17th season in the NBA and his fifth with Boston, the 6-foot-11 forward has been known as the center of Boston’s defense since he was acquired from Minnesota. Now Rivers says he’ll probably be playing the 14-time All Star in that spot a lot more.

As trade rumors involving center Jermaine O’Neal continued to swirl around the team’s practice facility, Rivers had a quick answer Saturday when asked what he plans to do.

“We’ll move Kevin,” Rivers said. “He will play the 5 this year. I honestly don’t think that it’ll be a problem. When he was younger, it would have been a problem.”

Celtics re-sign forward Jeff Green

The Boston Celtics announced today that they have re-signed forward Jeff Green. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“It is great to have Jeff back with us,” said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations. “We love the versatility that he brings to our roster and we think he will be an important part of the success that this team will have this season.”

Green, a 6’9” forward, averaged 13.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 32.4 minutes per game last season split between Boston and Oklahoma City. The former Georgetown Hoya was acquired by the Celtics from the Oklahoma City Thunder along with Nenad Krstic and a future first round draft pick from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson on February 24, 2011. Green recorded a double-double in his first start as a Celtic against Washington on April 11 recording 20 points, a career-high-tying 15 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Green improved his field goal percentage after the trade to the Celtics, shooting 48.5 percent from the floor in 26 games with the C’s after shooting 43.7 percent with the Thunder. Green has posted career averages of 13.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 315 games. Green recorded a career-high 37 points against New Jersey last season on December 1, 2010.

Celtics sign Chris Wilcox, Marquis Daniels and Greg Stiemsma

The Boston Celtics today announced that they have signed free agent forward/center Chris Wilcox, guard/forward Marquis Daniels, and free agent center Greg Stiemsma. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Wilcox, a 6’10”, 235lbs forward/center, appeared in 57 games for the Detroit Pistons last season averaging 7.4 points and 4.8 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game. Wilcox also shot a team-high 58.1 percent from the field in those 57 games. In his 29 starts last season, the native of Whiteville, North Carolina averaged 8.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Wilcox recorded a season-high 27 points and a season-high 13 rebounds against Milwaukee on April 8. The eighth overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft recorded career-highs in points and rebounds during the 2006-07 season while with the Seattle Supersonics with 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

Daniels, a 6’6″ guard/forward, appeared in 49 games for the Celtics averaging 5.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 19.1 minutes per game. Daniels recorded a season-high 19 points and seven rebounds against Houston on January 10. In his three seasons with the Celtics (2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11), Daniels has averaged 5.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and shot 49.5 percent from the floor. During his eight year career Daniels has posted career averages of 8.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 steal in 22.5 minutes per game.

Stiemsma, a 6’11 center, last played for the Sioux Fall Sky Force of the NBA Development League. He appeared in four games for the Sky Force averaging 9.0 points, 10.8 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game. He was named the 2010 NBA Development League Defensive Player of the Year after he averaged 9.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and a league-leading 3.7 blocks per game for Sioux Falls.

Bucks trade Keyon Dooling to Celtics

The Milwaukee Bucks have traded guard Keyon Dooling (6-3, 196) and a protected 2012 second round draft pick to the Boston Celtics for the rights to forward/center Albert Miralles (6-10, 230), General Manager John Hammond announced today.

Dooling, a 6’3” guard, has amassed career averages of 7.2 points and 2.3 assists in 675 games over 11 seasons with the Clippers, Heat, Magic, Nets and Bucks. Dooling appeared in a career-high 80 games last season for Milwaukee and recorded a career-high 11 assists to go along with 12 points against Cleveland on January 21. He also recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds at Chicago on January 24. Dooling led the Bucks in assists in 20 games last season as well as leading the team in steals on 14 occasions. Over the last three seasons Dooling has shot 38.1 percent from three-point territory. The former Missouri Tiger posted his highest scoring season during the 2008-09 campaign while with the Nets averaging 9.7 points and a career-high 3.5 assists per game.

Miralles, 29, was originally selected by Toronto (39th overall) in the 2004 Draft, but was traded to Miami on draft night for the draft rights to Pape Sow. The following off-season, Miralles was dealt to Boston as part of the Antoine Walker trade. A native of Barcelona, Miralles has not played in the NBA, but has played professionally in Spain and Italy, most recently with Angelico Biella (Italy – Serie-A).

An 11-year veteran, Dooling played in 80 games for the Bucks last season and averaged 7.1 points, 3.0 assists and 1.5 rebounds per contest. He has averaged 7.2 points, 2.3 assists and 1.4 rebounds in 675 career NBA games.

Thunder will attempt to part ways with Nate Robinson

STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF SAM PRESTI REGARDING NATE ROBINSON

“In collaboration with Nate Robinson and his representatives, we have mutually agreed to continue working toward clarifying his future status with the Thunder. Nate is an accomplished player, but with the current composition of our roster, it will be unlikely he will have an opportunity to contribute on a nightly basis. Given the compressed period of time that we have been given to work through the current situation, it has been decided that Nate will not attend training camp while we work with his representatives to resolve the situation. We will not be commenting on this subject further but will provide notification when a resolution is reached.”
