Oct 11: Nuggets 77, Suns 72

The AP reports: Whether it was the wind, the temperature or just a different environment to play in, the NBA’s first outdoor game in more than three decades was an offensive struggle. The Denver Nuggets beat the Phoenix Suns 77-72 on Saturday night in the exhibition game billed as “NBA Outdoors!” at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Both teams struggled from the field and the free-throw line and combined to go 3-of-27 from 3-point range on a night when the temperature dipped into the 60s with some wind hitting the court by the end of the game.

Melo may not play tonight

The Rocky Mountain News (Chris Tomasson) reports: Carmelo Anthony is listed as questionable for the Nuggets’ preseason opener at the Pepsi Center on Friday night because of a hand injury, and even coach George Karl isn’t sure of his star’s status. The fifth-year forward suffered a contusion on the fourth finger on his left hand in practice Thursday when a teammate slapped the ball out of his hand.

InsideHoops.com editor says: In preseason most star players are on the court for very limited minutes, so even if he was healthy Melo may have only played 10 or 15 minutes. All that really matters here is that the injury is very minor and will soon heal up.

Nuggets sign Juwan Howard

The Denver Nuggets have signed F Juwan Howard to their training camp roster, team Vice President of Basketball Operations Mark Warkentien announced today. Both local newspapers covering the Nuggets have said this will be a nonguaranteed deal.

Howard, a 14-year NBA veteran, played in 50 games for the Dallas Mavericks last season. In 1,001 career regular season games, he has averaged 15.3 ppg and 6.8 rpg and was an All-Star with Washington in 1996.

Howard, 6-9, 250, played in 105 games for the Nuggets from 2002-03, averaging 18.3 ppg and 7.7 rpg. Originally drafted by Washington with the fifth overall pick of the 1995 NBA Draft, he has also played for Orlando and Houston.

The addition of Howard brings Denver’s training camp roster to 19 players.

Michael Ruffin to Bulls training camp

The Rocky Mountain News (Chris Tomasson) reports: Forward Michael Ruffin was hoping to stick around his hometown in the hope his parents could see him play regularly. Instead, the 1995 Cherry Creek High School graduate will go to training camp with Chicago rather than the Nuggets. Ruffin didn’t feel good about his chances of making the roster with a nonguaranteed contract on the cost-cutting Nuggets, who have 13 players with guaranteed deals and aren’t certain if anybody else will be kept.
